i kno! that is so confussing to me cause you could say " man i want some ge" and they could think you daid i want some dog, lol. thats funnt tho

that is also confusing to Korean cause only 30% of Korean distinguish 'e' from 'ae' in my opion. So We call "ge" -> "dae-ge" or "Kkot-ge" ,"Ppang-ge" etc...
But, don'n worry. Your eyes can clearly distinguish "게" from "개" in the text in a book.

Actually, even most of Korean (urban) people can't tell 게(crab) from 개(dog) easily. Haha...
And that's why they sometimes make a pun about 게 and 개.
But they avoid confusion like this:
멍멍 짖는 개 (dog barking meong-meong),
바다에 사는 게 (crab living in/near the sea),
개, 고양이 할 때의 개 (dog of when you say "dog and cat"),
etc.
