and to you all people that are arguing where are cossacks from....cossack comes from turrkish word "kazak" which means "free man", so anyone could join cossacks if he was the right religion, although in todays kazakhstan there were muslim cossacks. most of these did not survive as a nation, but whole ukraine and parts of russia have ethnical-societal cossack groups. so you can be russian or ukrainian and still join cossacks in the past. it is a very etnically mixed community.
