Eh, I'm mixed about this game. I found it frustrating as all hell back when I was young and swore off of it after a few months. But nowadays, I have the same thoughts as yours as to why I refuse to play it ever again. Wolves, lions, gorillas and other such animals as the "enemy" in this game? Not to mention you're firing guns at them. That's just....ffff... Would it have been so hard to put in zombies and tribal men at the least?
It does look good for a Saturn game, though... Peace.
@ASDFGH200 lol saturn have better 2d motor than ps just look resident evil compare version of ps1 and saturn the version of saturn kick ass to the ps version , and games like panzer dragoon or Nights never can do it on ps... =)
There's none of the badly joined polygons on the Saturn, but the PS1 version is just plain prettier, having more colours, and easier to see where you are going, while the controls are easier to handle (though that may just be through familiarity with the pad).
Ah, thanks! Did you ever play the N-Gage port as well?
But I do remember this being a Saturn Exclusive for about 2 months, and Core then saying when TR2 was released was the reason the original was so small was because of the Saturn's 3D limitations.
I still think they were talking out of their arse.
@loomp It definitely wasn't X-Play that I saw the N-Gage version on. I've never heard of that show.
I have video footage of the PS1 version on my channel, along with other Tomb Raider games, and to be fair, the Saturn version isn't that far behind the PS1 version.
I have a capture device, but using that and getting a live voiceover is just too much like hard work.
@SteveBenway X-play is on G4 and may not be in your part of the world but they do have a Youtube and had a skit with a guy dressed like Captain Picard making fun of N-Gage name since Picard said "engage" all the time. Maybe you can get a video setup like Spoony of The Spoony Experiment or you can cheat and just voice-over video footage you captured and nobody could really tell the differences. Saturn hated it liked Dreamcast.TR PS1 looks pretty good on a Ps1 emulator, but I like TR DOS
ScrewAttackEurope, it was not because of the 3D graphics limitations of the saturn, the saturn had actualy way superior 3D graphics in comparison to the ps1, take a look at Shenmue "Saturn Prototipe", Panzer Dragon and Nights, those games are far ahead of what ps1 could do for exemple,
Now the reason of why most Sega Saturn 3D games didnt look that good, was because it was hard to program for,
@dinizgames I'm just quoting what Core said at the time really. I know the Saturn was pretty solid at doing 3D when it was done properly, and blew the PS1 out of the water when it came to 2D. But the only problem it did have was translucent effects, even though it was capable, people never programmed them correctly.
"DOH you div" Eloquent! lmao i have this on the Saturn and the PS and i think the view distance is a little better and the texture slightly sharper on the Sony attempt but maybe that's attributed to the time between this version and the ps release?
great vid. ive recently been feeling quite nostalgic about the first TR game. im not sure if i should revisit it or not. im afraid it wont live up to my memory of it. my long term memory seems to have some good antialiasing.
Altho the sequels got technically better each time, they also seemed to lack something that the orriginal had in bucketloads.
The PS1 version is awesome, but i cant get on with the Saturn version, the graphics are really muddy and blocky and its hard to find those hidden ledges and stuff because of this.
I played TR on the PC first and then countless times on the PS1.
I can't play them anymore, it is a game that hasn't aged particularly well. I would like to try it on the Saturn (should I ever get a Saturn) just to see the differences.
I actually completed this on the Saturn back in the day. Backed the wrong horse so to speak at the time. Spent ages trying to pick between the Saturn and PS1.
At the time my deciding factor was the history of good games that Sega had produced, I honestly didn't think they could go wrong :| I don't think anyone could have predicted just how well Sony did.
Lol, I read your comment and thought SNAP! I did the exact same thing. I went from a Sega Megadrive to Saturn and I bought TR and I remember being blown away by it at the time as I had never seen a game of its type b4. However half way though playing it on the Sat I then bought the ps1 and then bought TR on that and I never touch TR on the Saturn after that and completed the ps version. If you want to play this in a more up to date way buy Tomb Raider Anniversary for PS3 and xb 360.
The Wife got me Uncharted 2 for Christmas because she saw it was "Game of the Year" for the PS3, and I don't have many PS3 games. I would have never gotten it myself since I never really got into the Tomb Raider type of games. Man, was Uncharted 2 awesome. The game play was solid, just enough "tomb raiding" and action to balance out. But the real plus is the story and voice acting. It really takes voice acting to a whole new level. I mean, i kept playing just to see what they'd say next.
Quite a few points to make with my comment here (it might take 2) and it'll likely be controversial:
Even to this day, I still can't understand this: how the hell did this series ever become so popular? I played the original (admittedly, a few years after its debut) and the controls are STILL the worst for a game I've ever played. Going from your Dragon 32 vids, there're worse, of course but imo, particularly for that gen forward, it's UNACCEPTABLE for the controls to be so bad. The more...
...recent ones are FAR more playable and fun and definitely worth a look i.e. Legend and (I think it was called) Underworld but I haven't played the latter but going from the original games on the PS1 and Dreamcast, it still baffles me to this day. You should be able to get to grips with the controls within an hour or 2 maximum, yet my brother (who beat all 3, if I recall) said it took him days to master them.
Anyway, onto more light-hearted points now. I never knew this debutted on the...
Lol @ the Katers17 reference there - literally 10 seconds before you said that, I was thinking of her video. Along with the World of Warcraft audition video, definitely my favourite video of hers.
As usual, I have to close my commenting session with the obligatory phrase: good SWILL! :D
I think part of the reason the controls are so bad is because all we had to work with was one D-Pad. No twin analogue sticks to make life easy, so it was always going to be limited.
Try playing a FPS on the PSP... it's the same story.
Sorry about that, the old grey matter isn't working properly, obviously.
I find similar issues with the DS and Wii - I don't think I'll EVER get used to the touch screen/motion sensing nonsense. If it weren't for Mario, Metroid and Zelda, I would never have gotten either of them and tbh, the games are partly ruined due to that.
I remember seeing this game at a friends house when it first came out and i could of swore it looked a hell of a lot better!
I tried playing starfox the other day and quit 2 min in... Couldnt tell the difference between my ship and the blocks (buildings). Its like a resolution of 100x100.
Looks pretty alright for such an old game. They took a system with rather limited graphics and made it reasonably presentable. The areas are a bit bland looking as far as I can see, but the texture variety is alright, ... not too much horrible flat looking geometry with overly small wrapping texture syndrome. :p
I was never a huge fan of the Tomb Raider games, usually because of the controls. Same with the early resident evil games (though RE2 is fun). I find Uncharted to be a tomb raider-ish game that has the controls tomb raider NEEDED to be awesome.
I haven't played Uncharted, though probably should. For some reason it doesn't appeal... maybe coz it's Tomb Raider, but without Lara. That just feels wrong to me.
Definitely, but Nathan moves WAY more precisely than Lara ever did, and of course the scenery is way way better... though staring at nathan's arse isn't quite as appealing as staring at Lara's all game.
i once suggested doing a game collection video, but on the other hand i think its a good idea to do the game videos individually, because if you do some games for that console but not all, then people must be interested to know how many more games you have
Yeah, this was quite groundbreaking in its time. We were all used to straight corridoors... Doom and the like, round around, shoot, etc... then this came out and changed the rules completely.
Thanks for the upload Steve brings back so many good memories of many wasted hours until I finally completed it. Great stuff. I still own this on my Saturn and PS1 by the way. :)
Sega saturn was fast and better to handle 2d games playstation on the other hand was all about the 3d.

the main problem with this version are the colors. it's just too bad in comparison with the other versions.
on darker areas the Saturn one is a complete mess. Also, you must be really close to the walls so the game can put a better texture on it.
it is a good experience, but the PSX one is better, for sure.

Sounds like they were talking bollox to me too.

It's actually one of the few games I got myself for the N-Gage (won one in a competition, but turned out I won because noone else entered!!! Srsly!!!)
It is a realyl good port, it's essentially the PS1 version on a narrow screen, simplified controls and the music ripped out.

I waited a year and a half just to see which way things were going to go, before settling on a PS1.
In the end it all came down to the graphical quality of Daytona Vs Ridge Racer.
I still think the PS1 is the better console, but find the Saturn a more interesting machine, for being so quirky.

I think you had to be there to love this game and I wasn't! (I was just nintendo then!!)
How many people are going to play it now and be amazed? Not many, I would think
and I would find it hard to picture anybody who loved it playing through it now.
There are many great games for the PS1...
that have still great gameplay and that history and retrospect are kind to!
TR Historically important? sure!!!
Not a great game though.
Just my opinion folks.
