Kevin Smith is just reacting (in a rather immature way) to the fact that he got the lion's share of the blame for the Phantom Edit. People thought it was him. And because Lucas is incredibly intolerant of criticism (most specifically, founded criticism) and so is the rest of hollywood, it got a lot of bad press, which he got hit with.

The truth is they're both great edits, and Mike J. Nichols is a great editor.

That said, The Phantom Edit and Attack of the Phantom are excellent re-edits.

It's a worthwhile discussion for people interested in making films.
