  • @vvollero To tell you the truth, he really never mentions regulation by government. Just by record companies. And this is coming from a fellow libertarian

  • So sweeeet!!!!!!!

  • Thank you very muchly acidinurmind!

  • Who is the master who makes the grass blue?

    Gerry Garcia.

  • @spencerspindrift Hehe! ;)

  • A) this is recorded pre-March 17th, 1967 (as I suspected, and McNally indicated) in part 5, around 4:45, Randy says. "the radio stations don't play you," and Garcia responds, "cuz our record's not out yet." and it was released March 17th.

    B) this is definitely Garcia's former banjo student, Randy Groenke conducting the interview (at least thru the 1st 5 parts i've played so far)

  • According to the McNally official history (p. 186) Garcia conducted 2 (recorded) interviews in support of the new album -- one with his old banjo student Randy Groenke, and then one with the famous and hugely influential Ralph J. Gleason. This sounds like Randy -- i wonder if the Ralph comes in the later posted parts?

where do you get the July 1st date from? McNally has this happening in March.

i'm going to load these onto RockPeaks where we have a TON of grate Dead stuff goin on. ;-)

  • Everyone in the world should listen to this whole thing. Right now.

HAPPY JERRY DAY! Can't imagine life without the Jerry and the Grateful Dead.

  • thankye thankye

  • Jerry Garcia. Easily the best interview in the history of rock n roll.

  • lets do some puddles tonite.

  • Very insightful interview, an the earliest I've heard from Jerry (he was just short of 25 when this was recorded). I love his thoughtful response when asked to define the term "hippie" at 5:12, he describes it as "forward motion", "creative energy at its best", and "a better way for people who are in a creative community to look at things". And not just in a psychedelic sense, but also in an inclusive, community sense, where staying true to yourself is the only thing that matters. Love ya Jer!

  • Thanks for posting this interview. Fascinating! (Psst--It's 710 Ashbury; not Haight)

  • @Lisica2008

Sorry!--I corrected you too soon on the incorrect address--other people already performed that function. Next time I won't be so impulsive.

  • victimized by the record companies, you got that right Jerry.....in the end, the record companies victimized themselves to death......

  • Thank you for making available another piece of history!

  • Very interesting. One almost gets the impression that there's a subtext to some of what he's saying, and I get this impression from some of his unusual word choices. It's interesting that he described the band's output as a "product" that they "created demand for", and that he used the words "stealing from eachother" to describe the local inter-group influences.

  • wow this is great,

    tanks for posting!!!

  • LOVE IT! It was 710 Ashbury though, not Haight. It's up from Haight past Waller

  • thanks I was gonna put that in, they did live at 710 Ashbury.

  • Thank God someone had the foresight to record Jerry back then. Now we have Jerry talking to us for all time. This is as good to have as the music.

  • Wonderful!!

  • I love Jerry... he was such an insightful and well-spoken guy with legendary friendliness!!!

I like how he pointed out how the media is usually behind a lot of the "superficial" grouping of different bands with totally different sounds simply based on a common geographical location-- just because the San Fransisco bands were all "turned on" and happened to be a part of the scene does not mean they sound anything alike really, if you actually LISTEN TO THE MUSIC like Jerry said...

  • Acidinurmind, THANK YOU!!!

Peace, Love, and The Grateful Dead.

  • LADIDAH9

    your welcome,

hope you enjoyed all parts "-)

  • heres your pistol

  • Thanking you...

  • Gerry was always clever.

  • Gerry as in Gerry and The Pacemakers?

  • No! That was an inebriate moment. Thanks for pointing it out to me. How stupid am I? Heh, heh!

  • A-ok man...I had to comment because it just looked so weird, I hope I didn;t sound too much like a dick for pointing it out. Peace out.

  • No offense taken! With my user name, I should know better. Peace to you too, my friend.

  • Thank You

    This is fascinating

  • your welcome, check out all 9 parts

  • Excellent!

  • haha I love it.
