  • What I want to know is how he mitigates those halos around the marquees. At first I thought it was just zoomed out too far, but even when he zooms in, the color fills perfectly up to the edge. Did Photoshop not have anti-aliasing back then or something?

  • @revoltpuppy He doesn't use anti-aliasing :D Just uses high resolution to make up for it.

  • Just as amazing as his illustrations is his tools. This guy is doing all this with antiquated hardware and software. Just shows its not really the tools but the artist!

  • The speed at which he works is amazing! It's like second nature to him!

Guess it goes to prove that you should never let people tell you that just because something's old, that it's worthless.

  • I haven't seen anyone work like that since Paintbrush on Windows 3.11.

  • Qual é o nome da música desse vídeo?

  • genious and on version 3! LOL

  • This seems like it would be way easier in illustrator.

    ...just saying...

  • @ororonsangel yeah that's what I initially thought as well.

However after understanding more i realised that he is working much more efficiently in Photoshop.

  • u guys are idiots. he is actually being EFFICIENT by using the marquee tool. it allows him to make all the curves straight without having to tweak/undo/tweak/undo/etc. This guy has made digital art his life, and u amateurs have the balls to sit there and say that hes not doing it right?? GTFOH

  • @harshLesson not to mention he is regarded as one of the best in the biz

  • @benmpatton Bob has said that if he had a nickel for every time someone mentions that he should use Illustrator.... etc. etc. got admire someone who sticks with the tools that work....I go crazy every time Adobe comes out with a new version..... Crazy in the head and crazy in the pocketbook!!!!

  • gosh your such a good drawer ^-^

  • I'm most impressed by the fact this is done with the marquee tool, rather than PS v3.0. I thought Bob Staake was great before I saw this, but this technique just does my head in.

  • that photoshop is worst

  • photoshops power ..Is paradise

  • im more surprised he was able to screen-record this on an old powerpc mac at all!

  • ...assuming it was on a performa-era mac, which judging from the below comments, is probably not so. probably he's running on a Power Mac G5 in classic mode instead.

  • I think it's more about the bloat of the new software, absolutely beautiful illustration without the flack of the recent versions of photoshop

  • Um, ok, this technique works way better if you use either Illustrator or Flash, and these kind of illustrations really are better off as vectors anyway. It's an interesting and well-used technique, but using an ancient tool doesn't make it more impressive..

  • that's *exactly* what makes it more impressive! It's the artist, not the tools, as they say.

  • I agree that the tool doesn't matter, however it's not more impressive just because he uses an outdated one; after all, the tools he uses still exist in PS CS3. But would you be impressed if it was done in that? No, because what we see here is people being more impressed by the artist using an outdated tool than the by art itself.

  • Fascinating. Every curve is an implied oval. That would never have occured to me.

  • Sure PS 3 had great features and he really works them. But he'd be so much better with Illustrator CS3. He spends time over and over selecting and reselecting areas that could be trimmed or recolored in Illustrator more easily.

  • Perhaps he just needs this process ...

  • Any idea what machine he's running this on? Is it emulated? or is it like some old os 7 machine like a 9600

  • No, he's running some PowerMac with Classic, I'm pretty sure.

  • He says he runs it in OS X Classic, so it's presumably just some recent powerpc mac

  • that is so freakin awsome!!!

  • my god what a beautiful piece of art!

  • amazing how photoshop haschanged over the years...the gradients on this version 3 are so bad the pixels can be seen so obviously...wow...

  • he's using 'dissolve'mode for that i believe

  • Adding noise took care of the banding on any gradient. 3.0 was sweet

  • this is a good example of a creative genius not encumbered with the tool he's using no matter how old it is... great work! inspiring!

  • she is pale blue

  • The pros make it look so easy. ;-) Well done, Bob! Thank you for demoing your design processes.

  • LOL, this must be hard :)

  • ere u get it

  • My favorite part was when he drew the circle.

  • wich one?

  • Exactly.

  • thats crazy!

    i luv it :D

  • Wow that is so cool. Thats very creative. :]

  • FUCK CS3

use the best hardware/software there is: the brain/mind =)

  • nice.

  • omfg no pen tool!

  • haha...exactly!

  • LAwl!

    That's great!

  • Amazing work go classic!

  • nice

  • That's awesome! But I really need to know.... what is the music in the background? pls!!

  • If you go to the "Films" section on his website, there is a note that says the music (called "Feelin' Loopy") was created by Bob and will be available in a few weeks

  • I quote Mr. Spock on this: Fascinating!

  • very good :D

  • Love it, love it, love it.

  • all i can say is wow!

  • Amazing. ._.

  • REALLY GOOD 10X FROM ME ;)

  • dude, you're awesome

  • coolness! @_@

  • Woah

  • OMG 3.0???? I thought I was total old school working in 5.5, it was my dirty little secret. I never tell anyone. 3.0 LOL!

  • Ive been using photoshop since around or before 3.0, and this literally blows my mind, its on the floor right now... im wiping brain off my monitor... amazing.

  • OMG WTF LOL!!

  • What's the music used in the background?

  • Holy Grap.

  • PS 3.0!! That's badass.
