  • I remember this when I was a young school boy in the mid 1970's.

Today I am 45 and the song still jingles away in My Head.

    A true musical classic.

Wish I could hold The Pen that wrote this song.

  • C'mon Bro, play something we all know.

  • Awesome! Remarkable song!

  • Wow, that's excellent, did not know this song was Australian. It's been swimming in my head lately.

  • @ZaheedaNaheedya To be fair, it's a Kiwi song

  • @nzoz1976 You are correct, thank you for pointing that out... What is it with Kiwis?... Limited in population and yet the amount of success that comes from them so outstanding. This song is a gem... The melody, the lyrics... It's probably the first song I've heard whereby first verse is repeated as second verse... Very well done, beautiful song.

  • Tocava na Excelsior de SP lápor 76, e esta faixa pertencia ao LP Sua Paz Mundial da Radio Mundial do Rio, o tempo que os cariocas (sem generalizar) ouviam "música".

  • I've just discovered that Bruno Lawrence was once a drummer in this band.

    Wow.

    When?

  • what becomes of the broken hearted, jake the muss singing

  • I saw Max Merrrit perform this song at Billy Thorpe's Memorial Service. Max seemed to just about have tears in his eyes as he sang it. I have the full length version (5mins+) on vinyl. Everytime I play it, I think of that Live performance.

  • @clazza01 he is gone.....

  • Damn such a sad song. When it came out I was too young to even know what it was like to have your girlfriend's love "slip away" but I felt like it was happening to me whenever I heard this!

  • Parabéns à pessoa que postou este vídeo. Simplesmente maravilhoso!!!

  • I LOVE the drummer.

  • @innybunny he'd love you too, if he was still alive...

Look up 'GTK: Stewie Speer 1973' in your YouTube search and see how well loved he actually was. :-)

  • @innybunny Ahhh Steweie, very funny story about Stew. Friend of mind was in a band touring with the Meteors and Stewie launched into a massive drum solo at the end of one show. Anyway the band packed up all their gear and left the stage ... Stewie kept playing. Thing was they never came back - skived off to the pub instead. About 30 minutes later Stewie clicked as to what had happened -- man was he mad as hell when he caught up with the others .... ha, ha, ha.

  • @innybunny he is so gangster, he could roll with cypress hill

  • @innybunny nice comment.:)...the drummer is my dad!..Pete Sowden :)

  • @innybunny

I love the drummer as well.

He looks like Stinky Pete from Toy Story III.

  • So many people can relate to this song.

  • Anyone remember the scene from 'what becomes of a broken hearted'

  • @TheCelticmaori YES! haha thank you! i was thinking what movie i saw this from! haha

  • hello sepala vadivadica maximum naboro fiji hope u like it .....falar....jahbles...

  • Reminds me of when I was travelling in Australia back in 2002/03. Used to hear it a lot on WSFM when we were in Sydney. Great song with great lyrics, plus the fact that I was head over heels for a girl at the time but the feeling unfortunately was not mutual. Happy, yet sad memories all at once.

  • go check out 'GTK: Stewie Speer 1973' and tell me that joining a rock band in your 40's is not worth it!

  • @nzoz1976 how cool

  • @nzoz1976 That video was awesome, bahahahahahahaha xD

  • A classic. I remember going down to Torquay beach in a Holden panel van in the summer with my brother and his mates and and his friend's spunky sister sitting next to me in the front seat when this song came on. Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of discovering girls for the first time in my teens. Bloody fantastic.

  • Where did they dig the drummer up from? looks like Brian Blesseds grandfather

  • @SuperPhil1960 his name is stewie speer he was prob 30 years older than the rest of the band he died in 1982 in think

  • @abbb350

i think he died in 1986 at the age of 58... I believe he was nearly 40 when he joined Max Merritt & The Meteors in 1967. The band had been going for about 12 years prior and were probaby going through their 7th incarnation....

There's an interview with Speer on GTK (check YouTube) that dates back to 1969/70. You should see the young girls hanging on him. They would be at least half his age, if not more... still, you can't help but admire the guy... RIP

  • @abbb350 Respect

  • This song hs so much meaning to each one of us. Thanks Max Merritt, so ur e legend iv always yearn for

Sadly, w our National/Independence Day approaching, this song is about what seems like my government letting e country slip away from its People who toiled to build this country, Singapore, giving way to e onslaught of ill-educated, ill-willed, 3rd world economic refugees

  • my government letting e country slip away from its People who toiled to build this country, Singapore, giving way to e onslaught of ill-educated, ill-willed, 3rd world economic refugees to plunder our country, dirtying it&commting crimes.

Singaporeans r tearing inside..for me,my tears is like blood flowing inwards..

  • Essa música dá poder na alma.quando estou numa Dificuldade escuto e me reergo,Música de guerreiro que não desiste da Vida

  • Beautiful song... touches a nerve

But i got distracted by the drummer.... did they need a fill in for the night? haha

  • I disagree with CANARVONKID, maybe he should have been around when max was doing the first Sunbury Festival, Sherbet had nothing on this band, At best daryl did good covers of artists of the time, but apart from that Pffftttt!!!

  • this reminds me of the time i couldnt find any lighters!

  • OMG, just fantastic, so mooded, so true in the feel.

  • Reminds of when I was a kid aged 9mucking around at a family and friends bbq at home.

Hot Sydney summer late arvo and night in and out of the pool, the smell of chlorine in the hair and mega games of back yard cricket. (6 and out over the fence, watch out for the dog next door retrieving the ball!)

Aeroguard, the smell of bbq snags, steaks and Mums special coleslaw. Yum.

Dads torch to play "spotlight" with the other kids in the backyard when it finally went dark.

    And this song.....

  • @Gee40areretarded I relate to you

  • @ridgeruna thanks...you know how smells remind us all of places, people, etc...well I believe that certain songs are the same...just like Jonie Mitchel sings in her song - Blue..."songs are like tattoos"...glad to read that you relate to my childhood memory....good times...good times now as well watching my sons....

  • @Gee40areretarded Those were the days....Ahhhh how I miss them sometimes!

  • Jake "The Muss's" version is better.

  • I remember Max Merritt at Arista Records, London, he did a great single which I think was called "Let It Slide" He really was a very nice person, so down to earth. It really is a shame he should have made it big in the U.K. Another waste of letting great talent slip away.

  • I think Sherbet could have done a good version of this song too.

Also they could have done "Ill be Gone", that was done by Spectrum and "Woman, your Breaking Me" sung by The Groop.

  • Sherbet did do a version of 'I'll Be Gone'. It sounds a little like 'Slippin' Away' coincidently.

  • Probably the best 'breaking up' song or 'thinking you might have to break up' song known to man (or woman for that matter). A beautiful song about insecurity and paranoia and pain.

On another note, it never ceases to amaze me at the irrelevance of the comments posted.

What sort of a cretin are you, julzbra1, to ask that question. What is the connection? Is this the limit of your artistic crtique? Honestly, if you let it, posters on You Tube can sap the life away from you.

  • Yeh, too true. The typical dumb American comment goes something like 'He looks like ____ on ______'

    Retards.

  • Does any one know if that is Tony Mitchell from Sherbet in this clip... and if yes is he playing bass?
