@nzoz1976 You are correct, thank you for pointing that out... What is it with Kiwis?... Limited in population and yet the amount of success that comes from them so outstanding. This song is a gem... The melody, the lyrics... It's probably the first song I've heard whereby first verse is repeated as second verse... Very well done, beautiful song.
Tocava na Excelsior de SP lápor 76, e esta faixa pertencia ao LP Sua Paz Mundial da Radio Mundial do Rio, o tempo que os cariocas (sem generalizar) ouviam "música".

I saw Max Merrrit perform this song at Billy Thorpe's Memorial Service. Max seemed to just about have tears in his eyes as he sang it. I have the full length version (5mins+) on vinyl. Everytime I play it, I think of that Live performance.
Well, late 60's in a little Underground Club in Melbourne(cannot remember where - who can?) remember seeing this guy playing with his band! Top end of Melbourne!??? Great Music!x
Damn such a sad song. When it came out I was too young to even know what it was like to have your girlfriend's love "slip away" but I felt like it was happening to me whenever I heard this!
@innybunny Ahhh Steweie, very funny story about Stew. Friend of mind was in a band touring with the Meteors and Stewie launched into a massive drum solo at the end of one show. Anyway the band packed up all their gear and left the stage ... Stewie kept playing. Thing was they never came back - skived off to the pub instead. About 30 minutes later Stewie clicked as to what had happened -- man was he mad as hell when he caught up with the others .... ha, ha, ha.
nzoz thanks for sharing your great librery of nz/oz music. this guy was always a great favourite, sang some truly songs....any chance of digging up 'comin back'?
Reminds me of when I was travelling in Australia back in 2002/03. Used to hear it a lot on WSFM when we were in Sydney. Great song with great lyrics, plus the fact that I was head over heels for a girl at the time but the feeling unfortunately was not mutual. Happy, yet sad memories all at once.
A classic. I remember going down to Torquay beach in a Holden panel van in the summer with my brother and his mates and and his friend's spunky sister sitting next to me in the front seat when this song came on. Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of discovering girls for the first time in my teens. Bloody fantastic.
i think he died in 1986 at the age of 58... I believe he was nearly 40 when he joined Max Merritt & The Meteors in 1967. The band had been going for about 12 years prior and were probaby going through their 7th incarnation....
There's an interview with Speer on GTK (check YouTube) that dates back to 1969/70. You should see the young girls hanging on him. They would be at least half his age, if not more... still, you can't help but admire the guy... RIP
This song hs so much meaning to each one of us. Thanks Max Merritt, so ur e legend iv always yearn for
Sadly, w our National/Independence Day approaching, this song is about what seems like my government letting e country slip away from its People who toiled to build this country, Singapore, giving way to e onslaught of ill-educated, ill-willed, 3rd world economic refugees

i been lookin for a song that i can relate to,, my best friend has depression an the most i can do is be there for her and this song describes what its like for me when i think about her :(
Reminds of when I was a kid aged 9mucking around at a family and friends bbq at home.
Hot Sydney summer late arvo and night in and out of the pool, the smell of chlorine in the hair and mega games of back yard cricket. (6 and out over the fence, watch out for the dog next door retrieving the ball!)
Aeroguard, the smell of bbq snags, steaks and Mums special coleslaw. Yum.
Dads torch to play "spotlight" with the other kids in the backyard when it finally went dark.
@ridgeruna thanks...you know how smells remind us all of places, people, etc...well I believe that certain songs are the same...just like Jonie Mitchel sings in her song - Blue..."songs are like tattoos"...glad to read that you relate to my childhood memory....good times...good times now as well watching my sons....

What sort of a cretin are you, julzbra1, to ask that question. What is the connection? Is this the limit of your artistic crtique? Honestly, if you let it, posters on You Tube can sap the life away from you.
I remember this when I was a young school boy in the mid 1970's.
Today I am 45 and the song still jingles away in My Head.
A true musical classic.

Probably the best 'breaking up' song or 'thinking you might have to break up' song known to man (or woman for that matter). A beautiful song about insecurity and paranoia and pain.
On another note, it never ceases to amaze me at the irrelevance of the comments posted.
What sort of a cretin are you, julzbra1, to ask that question. What is the connection? Is this the limit of your artistic crtique? Honestly, if you let it, posters on You Tube can sap the life away from you.

Yeh, too true. The typical dumb American comment goes something like 'He looks like ____ on ______'
Retards.
