Yes, 1978ajax, G&S doesn't need all this excessive embellishment--it's like a comedian saying 'look how funny I am'. Far preferred other versions--esp. Eric Idle version. Funny, but not a burlesque.
I just don't get it. How do folk not realise that G&S is not funny unless it's performed straight. I find the musical meddling tedious and obvious - no comparison with Sullivan's original. You need to see this done properly, IMO, to find out why it's so good and so clever; this version isn't.

I prefer the expressivity of Richard King in Gilbert and Sullivan version; but also I prefere the charactization in this version of the same Lord of Queen's Navy: more like a bureaucrat than a effeminate.
I didnt like their Mikado (though it admittedly had quite a few good parts) and they just killed Pirates of Penzance... But this Pinafore is AWESOME!!!
I was fortunate enough to see this production in Sydney and I enjoyed it immensely. I regret not seeing "Pirates" and "Mikado" although thanks to the ABC I have the videos. No longer able to play them on my dodgy VCR so thank you so very much for sharing on this site. LOVE IT!!
Essgee does it again! But whereas it sank--forgive the nautical pun--Essgee's version of The Mikado which became far too broad and music hall-like, here--at least in this one scene--it seems to work. At least Drew Forsythe created a comic CHARACTER this time, instead of the caricature his Ko-Ko became in Mikado. There's a creepy-crawly aura to Forsythe's Sir Joseph that's not entirely far off the mark (remember that the sisters, cousins, and aunts are all enclosed in ironic quotes)!

this is the australian production by Simon gallagher who starred in the original new broadway version in the 80's(australian cast) the broadway version was rex smith n linda ronstadt. some 10-15yrs later he redid a few G&S like this. the girls are "the fabulous singlets"
this is the best version of HMS pinafore I have ever seen! I watched the D'Oyle Carte version after and I was almost bored to tears. I think it's the amazing choreo that sets this appart from other versions the most...
OH have you got anymore of this G&S operetta???? and I noticed that you have one clip of Iolanthe. got any ,more of that??? Iolanthe is my very favoritest!!!! It never got the popularity of the others but I think it's the best
its intended that way, if you watch the proper thing you can see that its a cushion. it just adds to his overall grossness. i love these shows, though pirates and mikado were better.
the ladys are a australian group that those alot of 60's music, the fabulous singlettes, and did the trilogy of essgee G&S shows. they always had their hair like that, it is the way they wear their hair always when preforming, like 60's beehives.

There is nothing like this in Chicago... more to our pity. Great version, I tend to like variations.

Where's the female chorus??? They're usually the star attraction... especially for the cast.
