There are plenty of parties and independents. I think it comes down to who to preference for me too.

As for religion in politics, I think it's particularly worrying for secularists and free thinkers. There's tax-funded world youth day, the infamous "opt out" for religious education in school, the liberal exclusive brethren scandal etc Rudd may well be an Anglican, protestant or catholic, doesn't really matter. It's about the rise of religious extremism and that being both of 2 choices.
