@Andreazor I grew up with the animated Hobbit, and it uses the same style.
I understand where you're coming from, but It's way too nostalgic for me, I highly recommend watching the Hobbit anyways, it's actually quite fantastic in it's ridiculousness.
So it goes from the Lord of the rings in 1978 and then to the sequel in 1980 but the sequel has a different art style? That same one in the Hobbit. So it was made by different people but is a direct sequel still? Merry and Pippin look comepletely different!
@DJogdog Actually, it acts as an 'unofficial' sequel to the 1978 film. When Ralph Bakshi was unable to get the green light for the second part of his Lord of the Rings (originally affixed with a 'part1' on the title) saga, the makers of The Hobbit decided to ride on the cult following of Bakshi's film.
@AuntySemitist What the ... Omfg, you really got no frikin idea of cartoon movies. Never watched "The last Unicorn", one of the most high rated cartoon movies of its time? Giving a hint, its the same design studio. Just go back under your stone, far far away, and leave us alone with your unqualified opinion. Thanks.
@FlameJackstar Dont know where you got your degree in film critiquing... Just because a design studio had one good film does not mean that every movie they make is good, fool. You think all the prequel star wars a great films because the originals were? Idiot fanboy
@AuntySemitist Stfu, haterboy. :D I didn't say that the studio is good just because of one movie. Theyre interpretion of LOTR is great, too. It is drawn in a very lovely and detailed way, quite nice animations/frames for 1980's and surely NOT something for 5 year old kids, either childish. You have just no idea of cartoons, thats it.
And leave Star Wars out of this...! No frikin relation.
The animated "Lord of the Rings" was done by Ralph Bakshi. It was supposed to be "Lord of the Rings Part 1" but the movie studio which released it wouldn't title it as such. Bakshi never got to finish his work. Then, Rankin-Bass did this version of "Return of the King."
@AuntySemitist if you read the books. you'll notice that they are filled with "god damn singing" and that does not make them poor quality books. I am right or no
@AuntySemitist it's the fact that the people animating it clearly were talented at figure drawing and drawing exact people but had little to no experience in cartooning. or animation for that matter.
While Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings" was pretty faithful and at parts even good animated adaptation of the story, this isn't. Anyway, Saruman/Aruman doesn't shoot fireballs from Orthanc. But he doesn't do magic wrestling with Gandalf either, so whatever version you like the best, it's never the serious affair of the book. The fun comes from the hobbits, who are cheerful even at the face of death. No surfing the Mumaks' trunks there.
When I was a kid, I ain't never seen no shit like this movie!! Or heard of Lord of the Rings... So from that perspective, this movie will always hold a special place for me. It's really a piece of art for what it is, it's so dark!!
i have and read every masterpiece by Tolkien, and out of the visual adaptations, i STILL prefer P.Jacksons. no critic, professor or any1 elses opinion matters on what U like or prefer except ur own. i sooo would like to see Tom Bombadil tho. just love that character. would be nice if jackson threw him in, as well as his wife. in many ways he reminds me of the absent minded professor LOL
"Frodo of the nine fingers, and the ring of doom..... Why does he have nine fingers? Where is the ring of doom?" So many questions, especially why he's missing a finger. xD
I know after the newer movies were released a few people don't like this interpretation but we weren't inundated in films back in the day. @FreakDaMIghet what the hell is going on? i thought the second film just told what happened to the fellowship and stopped unless it goes straight to mount doom. can someone please explain this to me please? i only saw the hobbit.
@able2ful1, Return of the King was the THIRD movie. The second one has Frodo and Sam meeting Golum, Arigon, Gimli and Legolas go looking for Merry and Pipin and fight in the battle of Helms Deep and a bunch of trees kick Lord Sarumans ass back to Attack of the Clones, (Christopher Lee joke) Other then that, nothing really happens. If I'm missing something, guys. Please tell me.
odd the hobbit cartoon of 1977 had a diffrent look to it than the fellowship of ring i meen biblo looked nothing like he did in the hobbit now in the return of the king it looks like they used the same format because bilbo looks like an older version of what he looked lik in the hobbit
@rulemadman123 That is because the funders of the first film cut their funds and the original animator Ralph Baskhi discontinued the animated first two LotR books version. What also explains your confusion: this 'Return of the king'-version was planned as a sequel to 'The Hobbit'. IMHO: most characters were animated better in the Bakshi predecessor (especially the orks and the Rohirrim).
@sendanor I couldn't stand the Ralph Baskhi version - I think filming actors then simply tracing them makes for cheap-looking animation. The voice actors are better IMO in these versions, the artwork is beautiful and not rotoscoped all to hell.
@Sakyosha it may had seen like cheap animation, but i bet they've spend 3/4 to go to spain, hire over 70 rotoscoping actors, film the battle scenes, make the costumes, and to pay the trip back home to edit the film and trace it all over it.
just because it's motly rotoscoping, doesnt mean it looked awful, some scenes looked beatiful, Bakshi tought of doing rotoscoping only for the battle scenes, then animated tradicionally the rest, but he choose rotoscoping as an art form.
As ridiculous as this version can be at times, it IS a legitimate interpretation of the books. I like to think of it as a kid's Beginner's Guide to The Lord of the Rings, and something that hardcore adult fans can enjoy as another telling of this much-loved story. Kids loved this way before PJ's ever came out, and it made people read the books. And that the story was actually about him regaining the throne of Gondor.
@daffodil977 my university professor (I took a class based entirely on the world of Tolkien) was absolutely in love with these movies. He couldn't stop raving about how much better they are than Jackson's trilogy due to how accurate they are. I watched them probably 5 years ago, but only recently went back and watched them again
Aww, it's been so long since I last watched this movie! So nostalgic~ But where is the rest of the movie? Are the parts 2 - 10 (by this same account) not uploaded yet or were erased?
i love that introduction of gandalf's as it pretty sums up the entire relevance and aspects of the books, good against evil, the fall of a dark emperor of shadows and evil and the return of the bright light of hope and men, which forms the world we call earth today.
... and was intended to be a two-part film. However, people felt misled because it wasn't explicitly stated as being half of the story and were dissapointed, so the second half was cut. Then R/B came back and did the last volume as a film.
Also, the "other book" you're referring to that came after the Lord of the Rings was the Silmarillion. It's never been depicted in film (at least to my knowledge).
@panzersherk12 Because certain mythologies have creatures called Gaulem, which are creatures made of frogs. Golems though, are kinda different, they are human made creatures that act as gaurdians, they are from Jewish mythology. I am not entirley certain which mythology the Gaulem is from, nordic perphaps.
but someone tell me if this is the same guy who did the hobbit
because the characters look exactly the same as in the hobbit like elron is tall and looks like a methhead with those rings across him and gollum is that weird mutant frog with ears.
they are 6 books separated into twos. Fellowship was 2 books. two towers was 2 books. return of the king was 2 books. each book was published separately.
@BlackSpittingCobra How is a confusing musical that has almost no continuity with bad acting a dull animation compete with Bakshi's hilarious but well animated/live action done film?
How does this pitifully bad Bilbo and not-speaking Aragorn possibly compete with John Hurt and Bakshi's Bilbo? Say Sam is better all you want,it comes at everybody's elses cost. I mean Legolas,Gimli, and Saruman are generally important.
Who thought it be a good idea to turn one of the greatest fantasy stories into a musical? Wait this was release in 1980 so probably made in the 70s, okay that makes sense, everyone was high then.
@swinabc i think youd need to download it ,but have you seen the fan made film called the hunt for gollum?thats on you tube and is not to bad ..you can view all the extended scenes from the 3 movies in sequence on you tube aswell
sure if the Elven King 5:26 isnt a goblin too+

Also, the "other book" you're referring to that came after the Lord of the Rings was the Silmarillion. It's never been depicted in film (at least to my knowledge).

@panzersherk12 why is pippin a monkey
HrishiKod 1 month ago
@panzersherk12 Because certain mythologies have creatures called Gaulem, which are creatures made of frogs. Golems though, are kinda different, they are human made creatures that act as gaurdians, they are from Jewish mythology. I am not entirley certain which mythology the Gaulem is from, nordic perphaps.

i wish bakshi directed this one
but someone tell me if this is the same guy who did the hobbit
because the characters look exactly the same as in the hobbit like elron is tall and looks like a methhead with those rings across him and gollum is that weird mutant frog with ears.
not trying to offend the movie

BlackSpittingCobra 9 months ago
@BlackSpittingCobra How is a confusing musical that has almost no continuity with bad acting a dull animation compete with Bakshi's hilarious but well animated/live action done film?
How does this pitifully bad Bilbo and not-speaking Aragorn possibly compete with John Hurt and Bakshi's Bilbo? Say Sam is better all you want,it comes at everybody's elses cost. I mean Legolas,Gimli, and Saruman are generally important.
Oh no anything's better than this,ANYTHING
Warriorcats64 9 months ago
Who thought it be a good idea to turn one of the greatest fantasy stories into a musical? Wait this was release in 1980 so probably made in the 70s, okay that makes sense, everyone was high then.
