  • First time I ever saw Trey. So great.

  • Best LIOG ever.

  • why does trey always look constipated while soloing????

  • it was unannounced, he just came out and the place went nuts

  • 6:00 Trey finds the groove. This is Great!!

  • was trey a surprise guest or did the audience know he would be there?

  • haha carter cuts into trey and dave looks back pointing at carter.

  • just amazing. great. im in love with it. really.

  • dave should have just put his guitar down

  • give me the chills everytime

  • This was the first time I saw Trey live, since this show i've seen DMB 3 times and Phish 12.

  • @EvilKingWils0n you can keep it

  • god loves this jam

  • dynamically amazing.

  • HELL YES!!!

  • Man...that was a magical performance....

  • Why is Trey so gooood!

  • Trey is one of only three people I've seen lead Carter into the crescendo that makes the crowd go nuts. Watch almost any other LIOG, and Carter is the one that makes the crowd cheer, regardless of who's soloing, or what they're doing. (The other two were Tim Reynolds and Bela Fleck.)

  • I personally wish instead of Tim DMB had a guy like Trey or no electric at all. He fits their feel way more than Tim although I do love when he rips.

  • however DMB has big shhlongs

  • trey just makes dmb cool. dave is pretty lame without ernest j. anastasio

  • this was my first DMB show and I still get goose bumps listening to that solo. i was also standing right near where you shot this so it's as if i was there again. thanks for the video.

  • Anastasio is one of those guitar players who would play with any band out there, and probably show them up 99 percent of the time.

  • I proudly say I am a Phish Phan!

  • Very Santana-esque.

  • Trey is great, but Timmy's a much tighter player. I've never heard TR miss a note, but for a variety of reason - drugs being the biggest - Trey is sloppy in comparison. I do love trey in this song and believe he leads it better than Timmy could.TR - if possible - is almost too tight at times and isn't nearly as exploartory as trey. I'm rambling...

  • @prabs1976 if someone is near you. . . have them slap you in the face for me for calling Trey 'sloppy' . . . I think Eric Clapton put it best when asked how he felt about being the greatest guitar player ever. . . he said "I wouldn't know, ask Trey Anastasio" Not saying Trey is the best ever, but I trust Eric Claptons knowledge of a 6 string more than yours. . . just saying

  • @georgodajungle . Very true and shouldn't have said TA was sloppy... a lazy statement. Trey makes this probably the best LIOG DMB has ever played so that should say how I feel about Trey. I just feel he gets a bit loose at times is all I was saying. I stand corrected.

  • @georgodajungle in defense of prabs, trey does experiment with dissonance some and is fond of making noise kinda like zappa or captain beefheart...but any sloppiness is on purpose! except maybe 2003 lol ;) trey is the greatest, listen to clapton!

  • @prabs1976 you wouldn't say that if you saw Superball.....

  • @prabs1976 and WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY of base!!!!!!!!!!

  • i feel like i just watched trey overcome opiates in about 5 minutes. beautiful

  • so beautiful... one of his first performances after the whole drug ordeal... you can see him stumble at first almost like he doesnt know if he's got it.. but Dave keeps pushing him and then he finds it and you can feel the whole audience respond and starting seeing their jedi reborn!

  • DMB would be so much better without the violin wanker. Phish knows when to end songs so they dont drag on... this should have ended shortly after Trey ripped everyones face off... violin man should promptly khs for trying to compete in any remote way at all.

  • @milktrey come on now music is about love.... if they are good enough to be on that stage they should get a turn to talk.

  • @milktrey yeah take it easy talking about my boy boyd like that, i love dave and phish and boyd rips it up with the best of them....of course trey is the best of them tho

  • @milktrey and how is your band doing?

  • I really cant get enough of Trey.. He plays the universal conscience like no other!!!!

  • I want to hear some new Dave and Trey!!!

  • WHY IS EVERYONE STANDING STILL WHAT A FUCKING SHITTY CROWD!

  • only t hing that made this worth watching was trey... the rest was a snooze fest.

  • 5:50-6:10 is life changing. Goosebumps all over my body.

  • @UsEliteSki you dude - dad

  • @UsEliteSki that was really really fine. a refresher from Tim.

  • @toaker100 I love Tim because he meshes really well with the band, but trey has a smoothness about him that is really great to listen to.

  • so. nasty.

  • I'd gladly give up a pinky toe to have been at this concert. Trey making love to that song with his guitar starting at 5:45. Fucking amazing.

  • This is my absolute favorite DMB song and then adding Trey to it brings a tear to my eye. Absolute brilliance. I love it!

  • Stage must have been hurting after trey stepped off! How do you go on after that?

  • This one get me almost to tears. To know what Trey was going through shortly before that concert and the way he brought it in that solo. It was like redemption on a spiritual level. DMB wanted him to bring it and you could tell that they loved what was happening up there. When Trey breaks it loose after 6:00 you can hear the love from the crowd. To have been there would have been epic!

  • @EvilKingWils0n no more than that tho please haha

  • Bow down to the jedi!

  • Trey made this song 30 times better!!!

  • probably just put 100 views on this trey is the shit. Cant wait to see phish in 2011

  • yaaa TREY!!!

  • Still gives me the chills

  • This vid gets me on a human level more than a musical one. Not to say it isn't a great performance . . . but a little after 6:00, Trey is basically done. Mission accomplished. He went out to play a heartfelt solo that basically stayed within the song, and he did. But he's enjoying himself, and he can't let the moment slip by, so he goes back to the ladder for one more go . . . and when he hits that chord around 6:58, it's just . . . total catharsis.

  • @ToobYou97 very truthful my friend

  • Can you imagine if DMB had Butch back, plus Tim and then Trey joined, too??? Holy epicness...

  • This ginger's got soul

  • Awesome video!! Does anyone know where to buy/download this song?

  • Huge phish fan, was once a huge DMB fan. This is a GREAT moment in live music and in rock and roll in general.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again. Trey is a Jedi.

  • i can't get enough of this tune, it used to be my fav dmb song but this version with trey playing< i think one of the best solos of all time, and I'm sober now 5 yrs. Its like a voice and he has such patience its remarkable. I wish could of been there...trey w/ dmb is a match made in heaven!!!

  • 14 people don't have souls

  • @swh945 Those are the clowns that think AC/DC and Aerosmith are the greatest bands

  • Dave & Trey, Can't get much better than this

  • This would be from the early stages of Trey's sobriety right? Sounds good to me.

  • Sounds kinda like a mark knopfler solo. Some of the best playin i've ever heard from trey

  • memory card change... haha

  • Comment removed

  • lot of talent on that stage

  • I JUST LEARNED THIS SONG

  • I love the way of Dave's supports to Trey on the stage ... <3

  • I wish Trey regularly toured with DMB instead of Tim Reynolds. I'm not necessarily saying TA is better than TR, so don't jump down my throat with gutless YouTube hatred. Trey's playing simply speaks to me in a more profound way.

  • @brandon1ucas i wish that too, i dont really care for tim reynolds

  • i was there

  • I was at this show and it is still one of the best solos I've seen Trey do to this day. Unbelievable.

  • I wish I could've heard that conversation, Dave talking to Trey seeing if he wanted to come out and play. This is one of Trey's first perfomances after his stint in rehab. Really quite emotional I think. Love him on this track.

  • I want a live trax of this show just for this song

  • Um, that was intense, wish I was there, thanks for posting the video.

  • i cant believe this fag go tto play with trey. dave matthews doesnt deserve to even stand on the same earth as trey. his entire career was based off of when trey was playing with dave and friends for that short time.

  • @wahoowill89 you're pathetic

  • @wahoowill89 .............................................. no his career isn't based on his solo album and that subsequent tour. its based on the 20 years of touring where hes built a large enough fan base to be the number 1 touring band in america in the past decade.

  • @wahoowill89 both bands starting building their fanbase and success around the same time, early 90's. only till recently did they come together to play. dave's success has nothing to do with trey. dave and trey's collaboration is just the industries attempt to spread interest across genres.

  • @cyhayward They've played together in the mid 90's and this has nothing to do with the "industry".

  • @darkstarncw you're right, surely the "industry" has no interest in two of the largest touring acts in america coming together.... why would they care?

  • @cyhayward My point was that this wasn't the making of the "industry", it was born from the musicians themselves. Of course there was money to be made, but that wasn't the driving force. I demonstrated my point with the fact that they had played together long before this, thus disproving one of your arguments.

  • @darkstarncw any specific dates prior to them being huge? i'm sure the recordings would be interesting to hear.

  • @cyhayward 4/20/94, 4/21/94, 10/15/94, 6/17/95. That's Dave or members of DMB performing during a Phish set, although I'm positive members of Phish performed during DMB sets as well.

  • @darkstarncw ah well both were pretty huge by then. thanks for the dates though i want to check them out.

  • @cyhayward DMB hadn't yet released Under the Table and Dreaming so they weren't huge at that point, and Phish wouldn't really become a "big" rock presence until 1995. But they were both definitely on the rise, and fan numbers with no previous radio success were definitely quite high comparatively. Nonetheless I think there's not really an argument here at this point, so back to enjoying the music!

  • @darkstarncw if you're selling out red rocks and msg i'd say you're pretty big.

  • @cyhayward Well I know for sure DMB wasn't selling those venues out, in fact when they played Red Rocks in 94 it was as an opener for Los Lobos and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. 94 was also the first time Phish ever played in MSG and was so out of the ordinary for them that they played an awful show.(11/30/94 if you're interested) As I said, they were both on the rise, but they definitely had not hit their "huge" points.

  • @darkstarncw true, but it's a bit naive to think the two acts coming together arose from just friendship or good taste in music. Naturally the record labels' pounced on a highly lucrative idea. Similarly, the nature of "opening acts," to increase awareness of new music. And for the labels, my guess is that they're not all that interested in spreading the love.

  • @cyhayward At this point I believe the dichotomy between our points comes down to the definition of "big". Since it's quite relative, I'm going to go ahead and say that we are both right and wrong depending on definition. Either way this has been an amusing dialogue so thanks for sticking around.

  • @wahoowill89 lol You are a fool! Yah Dave's entire career is based off of the 03-04 DM+F tour. Minus the 6 albums (7 counting Some Devil) and 10 plus years of touring before that. Do a little research before you make yourself look like an idiot.

In other news, awesome video. 4 of my favorite musicians on stage at one time (Dave, Trey, Carter, Roi) Can't beat that.

  • @rschlad04

dude, get your head out of your ass....how is the DMB career based on what you wrote...20 years of music does not just happen for a band based on one tour...

the history of DMB existed before this show or what you stated for 3-4 DM&F tour...If DM was a school psychologist, this would never have existed.

  • @wahoowill89 troll.

  • bnyce: yes very impressive about trey to respect daves song, amazing performance and the best ive seen of these two together! wherres the ending?!!??!?

  • That's what we call dynamics, ladies and gentlemen.

  • Trey can play over anything, any way you can imagine. That's why he's so highly regarded. Don't think so much about it, your giving me a headache. The man can play anything he hears. It's not average or normal.....he's a phenom!~ enjoy it, don't fight over it

  • i just love how at 8:10 boyd trys to solo and trey is just kinda of stairing at him like seriously? whikle boyd tries to play up and down the penatonic scale as usual and trey barley knows what to even play over the hacking of a solo boyd is attempting. haha.... love you trey

  • @nhintencegolf5 Actually it looks normal as always, Trey is feeding off another musician's playing, and trying to play off of them. Trey isn't some egomaniac that downgrades everyone, unlike half of youtube.

  • god damn trey is magical

  • trey's the F'ing man

  • Wow, didn't realize music was such a competition. I'm huge phish fan btw. How uncomfortable does trey look until toward the end. I think he attempted to solo and get into the groove twice before succeeding. 2nd time around he kind of looks at dave to bail him out for a bit. I wonder if he forgot to listen this song before coming out on stage. Good video.

  • Dave+Trey= The shit!

  • Man, once Trey starts to build his solo around 5:40 and you can hear the crowd go nuts (5:49) and we see the "trey face"...if you're familiar with Trey's career and that doesn't give you chills, I don't know what to say. When you take into account the circumstances of having recovered from addiction and just coming out of nowhere to appear on stage...pretty awesome stuff here. One of my absolute favorite videos on youtube.

  • Can everyone feel that!!!!!!!!!!???

  • @Euphoriaman mhmmm

  • WHEN U MIX...GARCIA, HENDRIX AND CLAPTON YOU GET TREY ANASTASIO!!!!

  • trey is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick

  • Does anyone else hear Dickey Betts screaming out in the solo? The last part of the solo - before the melody is passed off - sounds lifted straight from Jessica.

  • wouldn't either. . Trey is far better than BB King. . .sober anyways and this is when he 1st became so since 98 ish. Maybe i just don't like jazz as much but 2-24-03 was one of my least fav shows in part due to a wasted middle setpiece called King.

  • @LivesoninHeadPhones - Where did you hear Trey was fucking with drugs since '98? I read he wasn't addicted until at least 2000-2005 when he got arrested and clean. Anyone have more info on this?

  • @rawkus1167 well just from watching hundreds of his performances, he was on point throughout the 90s, 2000-2004 are the dark years, today...the jedi is back

  • @alexn159 I see what you're saying and that is a good point but still none of us know Trey personally so there's no way to know when exactly he was popping pills and when he wasn't. What we all like from Phish is different. Sorry but I like them for the sweet jams. They don't jam as hard now as they did in '03-'04, regardless how you feel about that period. That's just a fact. Now the longest jam they do is like 15 minutes. I would kill for a show like 7/30/03 now.

  • @rawkus1167 i wish you knew how wrong you are. i take it you haven't seen them this summer tour. they are shredding more now than they have in the past decade. 03-04 was the decline...

  • @buckeyerevenge - How what that period a decline? The Winter '03 tour kicked ass. Granted the summer '03 tour wasn't all great but there were incredible jams in those shows in July. And the December 03' shows are great too. 2004 had tons of great jams as well. Like I said it just depends what you like Phish for. i'm not really a fan of a lot of their shorter songs, I am mainly a fan of the long jams, of which there were a lot of in 03-04. Granted Trey's voice wasn't as good as it used to be.

  • i wouldn't either. . Trey is far better than BB King. . .sober anyways and this is when he 1st became so since 98 ish. Maybe i just don't like jazz as much but 2-24-03 was one of my least fav shows in part due to a wasted middle setpiece called King

  • trey anastasio, ladies and gentemen.

  • can't listen to this song anymore without hearing that note Trey plays at 1:42....best live version of any song i've ever heard, 8/14/07 will forever live in my mind as one of the greatest nights of my life

  • ive got dmb and phish on my calendar this summer :)

  • I absolutely admire treys talent. He is gettin' it in....jammin ' as always. Love it!

  • right up there w 2-28-03. . .in terms of experimentation, both highs and even better lows. . .one of Trey's best solos, not 97 Nutter Center, but damn close. . .not bad Tinsley and Carter playing as well :)

  • one of the best guitar SOUL-o's i have ever heard. crappy video but it still gets the sound....

watch this one, guaranteed to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck

  • phunkee as hell!

  • Thanks for sharing, that was awesome!

  • ugh, i can see butch in the background. what a fucker.

    oh, and nice work trey.

  • @ Alexander , I'm curious: Why do you call Butch that? Do you know something most of us don't? Do you have insider's info. Come on give up the juicy bits of gossip.

  • @filmtress I never liked him. never liked his solos. sorry, no insider info.

  • Wow, I just watched for the first time with nice headphones, Trey is a musical master in the way he plays. Very beautiful when you pay attention

  • i would never put trey and BB king in the same realm of playing ever, but this has to be one of trey's best demonstration of musical discipline that I've ever seen. granted he usually goes straight for the screaming lick whenever allowed (which we all love), but he knew enough about the DMB to come down during Tinsley"s outro. I hope he's getting clean cuz he's got a whole lot more to say musically before he's done. STOP THE MUSIC HATING. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T LISTEN TO IT. MUSIC IS FREE

  • "good music is good music, and everything else can go to hell"

long live free music my friend!!!

  • he ain't always wailing, plenty of phish to testify to that.

  • trey doesnt always scream when he plays. his solos tell stories which makes him one of the most knowledgeable guitar players

  • @bnyce52 Hahaha yeah, it was a great solo but he was so stoned when he was playing that he stopped before the song was over, started hugging dave and all them and left. The crowd was laughing because he forgot and dave didnt play the reprise to LIOG at all until they came back the next year....when they opened the encore with it...It was amazing

  • @bnyce52 you should check out Trey BB King and The Roots set from Hard Rock I believe like 10 years ago... Its amazing

  • @bnyce52 What? Trey is much, much better a guitarist than B.B. King. B.B. would tell you that without hesitation.

B.B. King has forever claimed that he "has no use for chords"--only playing modes/scales and almost predominantly the blues scale.

    Trey is incredibly versatile.

  • @TheBeerBaron88 The intensity I hear in BB's music comes from what he doesn't play. He sets up every little naunce when he phrases things so that when there is a gap of no playing your mind fills that gap in with what he would have intended you to hear had he played it. That's what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Trey doesn't do that. In fact I can pretty much hear what he's going to play well before he plays it. It mainly sounds awesome cuz of what the other players are playing.

  • @TheBeerBaron88 lol if you say that tray is better than the master of the blues than you really don't know to much about the guitar ... trey is amazing and has come so far playing with fish and for sure is one of my favorite guitar players but he is no where near bb kings level/status

  • @Mastas999 I am sure BB would tell you that he is not even on the same planet as Trey.

  • @richiemabie LOL im sorry but that discussion would never come up. As much as I love trey and what he does with phish ... BB shaped the blues to what it is today. He is the true pioneer of the modern blues guitar. He self taught himself and for the way he plays guitar and the way other classic bluesmen played such as Robert Johnson and Elmore James is just incredible for what level he took the blues to.

  • @Mastas999 To say Trey is not at level with BB !!! you really don't know anything about playing guitar. BB is the man, I have been to a show, as we know he will not live forever. He I do agree he is the man. BB king in his best days could never play a YEM period. He is a blues guiatar player very limited. You say Trey is predictable, impossible !!!! It is all improv . Dorian, mixolydian, locrian is what makes Trey one of the best out there today. Google: Eric clapton says Trey is the BEST !!!!

  • @richiemabie LOL HOW IS BB KING LIMITED WHEN HE TOOK BLUES FROM WHAT IT WAS WHICH WAS A SLOWER FORM OF MUSIC, ADDED MORE HIP AND MORE SOUL AND MADE IT WHAT IT IS TODAY. HE PIONEERED THE MODERN BLUES WHICH IS HOW MANY GUITARISTS JAM TODAY. YOU SAYING BB KING IS A LIMITED GUITAR PLAYER IS A FUCKING DISGRACE!!!!!

  • @richiemabie and clapton didn't say trey was the best ... that was Santana, which Santana is an incredible guitar player but that is the man who is limited.

  • @Mastas999 How does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world?" - Interviewer "I don't know, ask Trey Anastsio." - Eric Clapton // This is from guitar zone on Eric Claptons birthday in 2005 . BB is one of the best blues players out there. You don't play the guitar so you will never understand the talent of Trey. If you look him up on he is a composer not a guitar player. I could never even dream of playing some of Trey's compositions period. BB plays the blues an d that's it !!

  • Long live Big Red!!!!!

  • was this a surprise for trey to show up?

  • Yeah, noone expected it. Usually he brings on the warm-up band as a guest if he does so at all but trey just came out of nowhere.

  • I can't stop watching this. It brings back how i felt when i was watching it happen... i could not believe my eyes, it was truly amazing. absolutely phenominal. two of my favs together.. no better feeling watching it live. everyone was lost in the moment <3 .

  • that video makes me smile

  • same here, every time

  • I would love to see trey and dave together

  • Epic. It's not about who's better at what - it's about the music and only the music. There's no competition. Clearly everyone on stage realizes this... just enjoy artists do what they do best..

  • brings tears to my eyes and gives me goosebumps. sickness.

  • it's a high within itself, you don't know anything

  • dude..ur wrong..i do know. its tru that u can get "high on music" in a sense..but being high...idk..

  • in a sense yes, playing for 60 people makes me feel it hah i could only imagine how these guys feel..i do know that trey has really cleaned up his act, and after dave had kids he doesn't really burn anymore, but who knows

  • possibly although there is a video of dave when hes out of his mind on storytellers. im not sure which vid it is..id have to look around for it..but he was playing a song and setarting giggling during it and said that he had to stop cuz his mind was somewhere else..it was on of the sad songs i think...lmao

  • that would be the song "spoon" if i can remember correctly, he was def ripped..forgot the lyrics to the song as soon as he started hah funny shit

  • he was actually siniging the lyrics but was giggling like a fucking childd..lmao

  • yea bout trey and drugs...i was came across a vid of him having to do with being in court for haveing heroin n' shit..his lawyer was talking bout him getting clean..it was dated in 2007..not sure if it was before this concert

  • who cares, you both sound like morons

  • i live so closee im an idiot if i knew trey was at that show i wouldve gone

  • Don't hate yourself. I'd kill myself if I knew of all the awesome shows close to me that I have missed.

  • just one of trey's comebacks....
