for a song made famous by 10,000 maniacs, its noteworthy that the e street band does a better version with just one; what lofgren manages to do with that guitar is literally jaw dropping.
@chopsie01 check out /Because_the_Night on wikipedia and you will see that Bruce wrote the song with Patti Smith and her band made it famous waaaaaay before 10,000 Maniacs, whose version I have never heard...
Anyone still not convinced check out "REM country feedback with Nils Lofgren " on this site. Solo begins about 5.00. Peter Garrett watches Nils and the audience goes wild. Many just discovering Nils in the last decade or so but he has been doing it since he dropped out of high school and landed on Neil Young's After the Gold Rush, playing piano on that album at 17.
Sunbeam I love J. Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. Feel the Pain is phenomenal. If he can do it for forty years and be entwined into the inner fabric of rock, fantastic. Mascus is great but Nils has the pedigree and longevity of iconic, jaw-dropping performances.
I love how Bruce looks so proud of Nils! And he should be, I'm so tired of Slash and all those.. No one is writing about Nils, he deserves that! HE ROCKS!
I liked old Nils when I was 17 and i guess he wasnt much older, but this solo strains my patience and seems to be putting a strain on the drummer who is doing his best to keep Nils actually in sync with everyone else. As a solo its not all that inventive or fluid either. I can see how it might impress the amateur guitarists out there, but critically it's a bit of a dud. But hey, he's not a young man anymore.
@drakur31 Only if you're living in middle america with a bedroom full of metal albums and Foreigner posters on the wall. Try checking out some J Mascis for example, far more impressive than poor old Nils and his rocknrawl cliches. Like I say, Nils was good once but now he's just another tired old rocker getting his pay cheque from 'the boss'. Another day at the factory is all.
One of the truly classic leads in rock history. Look at the Boss admiring the playing. Hell he wrote it and has heard Nils play it a thousand times. How great is great?
yeah true but it is really not fair to try to compare any guitarist with Nils. And in Steve's, unneeded defense, he tore it up in the Sopranos, something Nils will never do. Both are great.
Yeah they are. I was just thinking back how everybody thought when Steve left the band that there would be a big drop-off, but Nils surely brought alot to the band. I'm glad he stayed after Steve's retrun.
Anyone interested check out all the early Grin albums to see the great guitar Nils was playing in the early 70s. And he still gives time to his fans after every show he does. For real afficianados try to find the Charlie and the Pep Boys album he produced and did piano on and the Kathi McDonald album Insane Asylum with Ronnie Montrose, Pete Sears, Neil Schon, Papa John Creach, John Cippillina and others.
He was my first Guitar hero back in the seventies, and his album Cry Tough was the anthem to my life.
I have met him on a number of occasion's at various venues around London, what a really top man, check out his early albums for a taste of him at his rockin best.
If they ever wanted to raise a few kzillion more ( for charity ), they could just do a dvd of all of the solos. This is very hot stuff!!

I was at this concert, it was phenomenal. I love Nils guitar playing, almost as much as I love Bruce LOL

Watching Nils' seemingly effortless play is always great. Watching The Boss appreciating it.... priceless. Rock On.

Spine tingling! I've seen Nils ( w/out Bruce ) at least 50 times and his solo's always give you chills, even acoustic.

I was at this concert and was in awe of this solo, Nils is such an underated guitarist, is up there with the best!
