I always wondered why I could never get my G to be just right, but then one day I discovered that this is a problem that has plagued all musicians throughout all time. I thought it was just me!
The octaves and the fifths don't line up together. If you get the fifths right, then the octaves are off. But if you get the octaves right, then the fifths are off. You have to make some sort of compromise between the two. I think they call it "equal temperament".
Yup. That has bothered me for a while, until, like you say, it's not "just me." In fact, you worded almost the same as I did when I had this video up on my old channel. I keep the octaves tuned pretty close together. To me if I make it match the gg course to much, the sound of the eE being out is more of a distraction. IMO

I've heard of people doing that but I'm not really a fan of alternate tunings. Have you tried it? I'd be curious about it.

Yes I have and it is a really BIG sound.
Also DADAD and others.
I think it suits the charango very well and I have used it at celidh's/jam sessions.
Ive always wondered why the charango is not used more in this way as it is much more comfortable to play than a mandolin.

Yeh...."tempered tuning"...its what piano tuners do also.
It's actually impossible to tune a guitar, totally accurately.
