Thumbs Up if you agree that John Carpenter 1982 version was scarier because its NOT CGI but actual props. Which gave the movie a creepier feel to it. The new wasn't that scary because to much CGI! -_-
Childs propably had The Thing inside, because it was thought to make a sequel - then what would be the new story about? Kurt Russel was a star, so he must have been selected to continue the fight. Who would he fight with? With The Thing coming from Childs. He was a strong person, so maybe new plot would base on this - The Thing would be even stronger. But this is only my opinion.
I'm sitting down right now to see the prequel for the first time, YAY! I'm so excited! I hope it rules! The Thing from 1982 is the greatest horror movie ever made!
@snake2006 Nothing could have possibly prepared me for that kind of disappointment. The movie was literally sabotaged, possibly by some producer, since the movie was at first set to use animatronics, like the original rather than CG. It's truly fucked up how the making of The Thing (2011) is more frightening and authentic than the finished fucking movie. Also, couldn't tell characters apart, 2 dimensional chars, too much chaos, bad pace, no room for suspense and character development.
I am with you. The CG didn't bug me as much, what bothers me is that they didn't even care enough to get all the details right. It as if they just decided to do a few things just to make it look like they tried and do the rest their way. It's why I have so much hatred for it, it spits on one of my favorite movies of all time instead of complimenting and adding to it.
what happened to kate in the 2011 The Thing movie? And did someone tought about this idea...when Childs (1982 movie) in the end, says to MacReady "I thought i saw Blair outside"...that he actually saw Kate (from 2011) because we after all don't know what happened to kate...? interesting idea for thinking
@nefredil it is but the fact it shows a fat man sxcurrying away and not a skinny sexy white chick...well just watch the scene when the black cook guy sees him and says i just saw childs go outside...well ya watch u will firgure it out but your ifea is cool
@DigiBullet23 well, after all they are all wearing big thick winter jackets and coats, so it would be hard to tell who is woman and who is man....yes yes i watched it just yesterday (for the second time, 'cause it is a great movie)...yes i remember the black cook guy, telling that, but...maybe it's not just the childs been there :-)...Anyway, that movie is from 1982 so, i think Carpenter didn't imagine any girl in his movie, like this one from 2011 :-)! Thanks anyway :-D!
1) You can't count Kate at all because when this movie was made, the story for the Norwegian camp was never though out at all. Except for a few clues.
2) Kate didn't even know about Outpost 31, as far as she knows there is a Russian camp near Thule Station, that is it. She had no fuel either, it was in the other Snow Cat. She is beyond fucked. She froze to death.
@snake2006 i agree about that! Thanks for answer, but on the other hand Childs is not sure who had he seen, so it is soooooo micro tiny gap (in story) in that, for some fans to put Kate :-)! After all, maybe she got lost in the snow and stumle upon the Outpsot 31...but that is only speculations of simple fan, like me :-)! anyway thanks for answering :-D
Or that Childs is A Thing and is LYING. It's pretty obvious that Blair got to him when Mac and the others went out to test Blair. The scene before Childs goes out on his own, it shows the camera going through the corridores of the base, then it pans down to the entrance of the generator room, then it pans back up,shows the door Childs was manning to be open, and has been open for a while because Snow is piling up in the base. Then Nauls sees Childs run out.
One thing I hate about the awards given out to movies is that when a movie is given poor reviews (like The Thing was upon its release in 1982) the awards associations try to pin other titles on related works, such as the Worst Film Soundtrack for this theme by Ennio Morricone. Which is in no way accurate, as this is an awesome theme for The Thing.
@rishi851 Very true. In modern times people want to be spoon-fed the story. The first time I watched the thing(1982) I didn't understand it, after watching it over a dozen times, the story finally hit me. I've watched it more than 100 times now and I still have questions unanswered but the movie never gets old
You know the one aspect that made these older films so good, and I think most will agree with me, is that they were catered towards the thinking audience and THEY FEATURED MATURE actors. Look at the cast here....All are seasoned veterans(in fact Rusell was perhaps the youngest at 31) and not pretty teeny boppers. They bring a certain weathered demeanor with them and it looks and feels real.
Look at the cast of Alien-the cast made that movie. Today EVERY film has to have everyone to be under 30.
@rishi851 i agree with you in some sense what gets me mostly is the cgi ...i loved how hey put together scenes... all and all the thing 1982 was a great film...one movie i can sit down alone with some beers and enjoy
Not only that, The Thing set a whole new standard in the horror business. Just like movies such as Alien/Aliens, Predator, did the made effect so good. That even today there extremely enjoyable to watch. The thing (i was born 1980) is a classic, the excitement the cast indeed was super.
It beats the prequel hands down! I do agree on your last statement indeed, if you see those teenager filled flicks now. Anybody could be a actor in this day and era :S
@rishi851 honestly after your ratn fuck all the actors these films were good cause the made the set by hand paid for all the shit in the room worked to make it look authentic...nowadays its just some dick with a computer and all the actors behind a greenscreen making them no good at playing the role...u get some seasoned actors who have gone from original filming to greenscreen and can still pull it off..but whoever invented gay ass cgi can lick the devils red dick.. i hate it somewat
@rishi851 Keith David was actually in his late 20s...and if you see movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Lord of the Rings, they feature very mature actors.
@rishi851 they figure if the person is older then it will lose the attention span of the general audience or in this case the highest paying which are young people.
This song is just like the monster itself. Creeping through the shadows, not being noticed, quiet... But all of the sudden, it strikes, in a horrible, violent fashon, killing everything in its path...
I know I like this video. And if you were all these things, then you'd just dislike it right now, so some of you still like it. This thing doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside a second account. It'll troll if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. I JUST got back from the prequel, and it was AMAZING.
I didnt like how much screen time the alien got, and I think it was more of a way to show off some of the awesome CGI, but whatever.
-SPOILER-
-SPOILER- The UFO scene was kinda silly. It was OBVIOUSLY just an excuse to show off some of the CGI, and quite frankly I thought it was rather unnecessary. Other than that, it was all pretty good.
The new one sucked, which upset me greatly. I had semi-high hopes for it, or I was at least expecting a decent film, but no. It shit on the original. me and my two brothers were commenting throughout, though my older brother enjoyed it.
@mwkcope Lol don't worry. *shakes hands with you* It just boggles my mind how critics say this was a bad movie. I guess I cannot become a good critic because of this.
@mwkcope Lol. However, there is one thing from a bad critic I do kind of agree with. This movie is a prequel which means this comes before the first one. The creatures in the prequel are more hostile and chase the humans in order to kill them. In the original, the creatures just wait there until they are provoked. Common traits is that they try to find the perfect time alone or when not that many people are their to transform.
@DerpinWin in the prequel the creature doesnt do that because it doesnt know it has to be stealthy but in john carpenter's film it has learned to be stealthy
@bob4o99 Judging by what Blair said, this alien species probably destroyed countless planets. It always had to be stealthy. Don't try to turn shit into steak here. It's obvious that they butchered the whole horror aspect and turned it into a slasher/thriller
@JamesJamie100 yes,but thats just a theory and also it didn't know human nature and tried at first scary intimidating tactics of assimilation in The Thing 2011 then in John Carpenter's film it has learned to be stealthy around humans because they can gun it down in seconds.Maybe the other aliens species ( if any other ) didn't have fire based weapons and it assimilated them without much effort.
I know, right? I thought it was gonna be another crappy Hollywood prequel, but they managed to match the tone and aesthetic of the first movie really well. Even the spaceship didn't look that out of place.
@idum01 it was alright just so many dumb moments i.e the girl goes "it can immitate any of us we should stay in groups" (next line) ok u 2 stay here guard the cars us 2 will go look for a cure u 2 go to the comm room" they all split up right after they say not to XD
Prequel was good. I enjoyed it. :) It doesn't try to replace Carpenter's film. It supplants it. Expect more action, more aggression~ but it makes sense... it doesn't understand humans that much. It underestimates them. Let's just say by the time Carpenter's movie comes around... it's a little bit more hesitant. Which explains why the original had so much tension. It knows us now. It knows what humans can do to each other. The treachery, the fear. <3
@BryanRiel Well, it was a poorly written screen play and it was the director's first movie. I didn't really feel any character development. Nobody was really special, etc~ it wasn't a perfect movie, but I did enjoy it. <3
@strikerk i agree with you. to me it was kind of a cartoonish grind house version of Carpenter's. more so a monster-slasher film, mixed with some elements of paranoia like the original. but for the most part, a different feel (not as dark, or as dread filled). they weren't trying to take the place of the classic, which i liked. they didn't even use this theme music until the end, when it's directly connecting to it JC's version. it was definitely entertaining.
I'm the biggest fan of Carpenter's flick, so obviously was a little hesitant to see this new prequel... I'm still up in the air about it... I liked it, hated that it was mostly CGI effects, and didn't like how it mirrored all the same pacing and scenes from Carpenter's movie...and the whole scene inside the ship should have been turfed. The opportunity to add soooo much more tension was there, but we instead got smacked in the face with people "Thinging out"
@Hperman09 its so they have an exscuse for them speaking english also alot of movies now days suffer from what I like to call ripley syndrome I.e. oh yeah women can be tough to not when there 150 puonds they cant a 300 pound monster from beyond space and time should have killed her in a second like(SPOILER)
'oh yeah women can be tough to not when there 150 puonds they cant a 300 pound monster from beyond space and time should have killed her in a second like'
aaaaaaaaaaaa...nothing like the HeartBeat! I've seen this movie dozens of times and alway wait for that last "Thump".....John's movie is the BEST!!!!!!
@JeffBridges54 My husband and I watched the John Carpenter version last night. The prequel set everything up perfectly; all the major details fit perfectly.
@JeffBridges54 Thats funny, when my father took me to see the Thing remake in the 80s-he said the same thing about the 50s original (The Thing from another World). I thought the 80s version was great and I would like to see the prequel!!!
@TheUntrained Actually yes and no, it supposed to simulate two things. The heart racing due to paranoia of who or what the thing is. As well as how close it is to getting its next victim.
@Shanethefilmmaker Yeah i suppose the fakeness of the heartbeat and yet the realism relly sums up the thing. An immitation that can be told apart from a real person but still seems real
The combination of this minimalist track and the cold, dark isolation of the Antarctic wilderness in the film was nearly as frightening as the alien. I still can't play the PS2 version of this game because I get panic attacks.
@Negropolis Upon leaving it's presumable "homeworld" (if it's not bio engineered) the thing has no true form. The monster we will see leave the ice will be a collection of multiple organisms it has absorbed before. Earth may not be the first planet it has encountered. It might not be the reason why it knows how to build space faring technology. It may have learned this from another alien, same as how it learned how to speak english. Imitation. Perfection.
@RogueAgentify He's quoting Palmer's line from the movie just after they torch the Norris-thing. They turn around and see the spider-head critter crawling away
IDK about the new one, it looks interesting, but this movie scared the SH*T outta me for the longest when I was a kid. Everyone talking about it's old....pssh so, still scary as f*ck.
@1Rocky91491 bro i know what you mean man i remember not being able to go to sleep for days when i was a kid man afte watch this lol and alien also fucked with my head too ...........damn the 80's had some good horrior films

Then prepare for huge disappointment. The prequel fucks things up.
Like the missing kerosene cans, splitface now has 2 sets of internal organs instead of one.
The dog isn't the same, the changed how they found the ship, they changed the norwegians around.
It doesn't fit properly like it should have. It is very sloppily done.

God, I was born in the wrong generation.
mwkcope 2 months ago
@mwkcope Lol don't worry. *shakes hands with you* It just boggles my mind how critics say this was a bad movie. I guess I cannot become a good critic because of this.
DerpinWin 2 months ago
@DerpinWin Neither can I. My Uncle reads a lot of reviews, and each time he does,my fists damn near audibly clench.
(Fortunately, he's an otherwise pretty cool dude)
mwkcope 2 months ago
@mwkcope Lol. However, there is one thing from a bad critic I do kind of agree with. This movie is a prequel which means this comes before the first one. The creatures in the prequel are more hostile and chase the humans in order to kill them. In the original, the creatures just wait there until they are provoked. Common traits is that they try to find the perfect time alone or when not that many people are their to transform.
DerpinWin 2 months ago
@DerpinWin in the prequel the creature doesnt do that because it doesnt know it has to be stealthy but in john carpenter's film it has learned to be stealthy
bob4o99 2 months ago
@bob4o99 Judging by what Blair said, this alien species probably destroyed countless planets. It always had to be stealthy. Don't try to turn shit into steak here. It's obvious that they butchered the whole horror aspect and turned it into a slasher/thriller
JamesJamie100 2 months ago
@JamesJamie100 yes,but thats just a theory and also it didn't know human nature and tried at first scary intimidating tactics of assimilation in The Thing 2011 then in John Carpenter's film it has learned to be stealthy around humans because they can gun it down in seconds.Maybe the other aliens species ( if any other ) didn't have fire based weapons and it assimilated them without much effort.

@randomdancing247 Never listen to the critics they are always wrong.

I know, right? I thought it was gonna be another crappy Hollywood prequel, but they managed to match the tone and aesthetic of the first movie really well. Even the spaceship didn't look that out of place.

strikerk 3 months ago
@strikerk I totally agree with you! It's amazing how people actually hate the new film!
BryanRiel 3 months ago

The opportunity to add soooo much more tension was there, but we instead got smacked in the face with people "Thinging out"
dootch71 3 months ago
Im confused about the budget of the prequel.
it didnt go into special affects which imo where sub-par
not the acting becouse again imo nothing outstanding
not the script:cookie cutter charecters, bad dialogue, amazingly convient i.e. it can mourph but not small enough to get someone two feet away.
So much potential wasted want a good thing exp? look up "the things" by peter watts from clarkes word magazine so much better than the prequel.

@chicksdigpenguins What bothers me is that they have an American female protagonist with the Norwegian researchers with it. It doesn't make sense.

is it meant to sound like a heart beat or is it just me??
TheUntrained 3 months ago
@TheUntrained Actually yes and no, it supposed to simulate two things. The heart racing due to paranoia of who or what the thing is. As well as how close it is to getting its next victim.
Shanethefilmmaker 3 months ago
@Shanethefilmmaker Yeah i suppose the fakeness of the heartbeat and yet the realism relly sums up the thing. An immitation that can be told apart from a real person but still seems real

The combination of this minimalist track and the cold, dark isolation of the Antarctic wilderness in the film was nearly as frightening as the alien. I still can't play the PS2 version of this game because I get panic attacks.

Who else can't wait for the prequel? I just hope we get to see the true form of The Thing (well the form it had before absorbing lifeforms on Earth)
Negropolis 3 months ago
@Negropolis Upon leaving it's presumable "homeworld" (if it's not bio engineered) the thing has no true form. The monster we will see leave the ice will be a collection of multiple organisms it has absorbed before. Earth may not be the first planet it has encountered. It might not be the reason why it knows how to build space faring technology. It may have learned this from another alien, same as how it learned how to speak english. Imitation. Perfection.
