A friend of mine surfed Waimea and his leash broke from a wave. He had to dive to the bottom (20+ft), and hold on to a rock on the inside for multiple waves. You need some balls to be out there....respect

@sensall100 Yeah he did. Waimea is easily 30+ ft on the outside with those waves, and he was stuck in the inside during his wipeout. You don't even live in Hawaii, so shut the fuck up. I didn't say he stayed at the bottom for 5 minutes or longer, dumbass.

Looks like it's breaking every 12 seconds, and those waves coming through the bay looks as though they are going to close out the bay.

Just a guess, but it might be the winter of 1982-83. MIght want to ask Ken Bradshaw on that, he would know.

The people surfing these waves know wave etiquette lol. If it was someone that inexperienced they would be dead trying to surf out there. There are not a lot of waves coming through, the waves are huge (there is a lot of space on them), and people are not doing high performance surfing. All of this means there is plenty of room for multiple riders and its perfectly acceptable.

you dont.... you get out far enough before they break... or you paddle around them. unless your like at the major shore break, then yeah you'd duck dive them.

Yeah, those monsters demand some channel swimming tactics, and a full-fledged "No!" on duck diving.

Take any one of these beasts head on by trying to go under it and, well...you'll go under alright, and after you've been thrashed around for 45+ seconds in the roiling brine and then you'll come up for just enough time to catch a quick breath before you're hammered by the next wave of the swell (and there's no end to the swell, just variations in its size).
