I wonder how many US people know that New York used to be called Nieuw Amsterdam and if they know the history of the name 'wall street' and many many other places that have been founded by the Dutch people who live in The Netherlands
1. The Pennsylvania Dutch are actually of German descent.
2. The Netherlands and Holland are not one and the same. Noord Holland and Zuid Holland are two of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. (Imagine referring to the entire US as Texas, or Ohio = they are states/parts of a country, not the country itself). Some Dutch people oppose using the term Holland, and yet it is also sometimes used in a patriotic sense, especially during international football championships.
@EnigmaDrath Holland and the Netherlands are the same. If you say 'Hollander', who do you refer to? To a Dutchman, of course, someone who is ethnically Dutch. Example: Die hollanders nakten onze wiri
Am talking about the people (mainly Americans) who assume that Holland is the official name. I can't count the number of times I got blank stares when I said "the Netherlands", only for them to go, "Oh, you mean HOLLAND", as though that's the absolute correct term. Of course, we use "Holland" as well here in the Netherlands, but at least we know the difference.
Holland is used as an alternative for the Netherlands, yes, but the name proper is still the Netherlands/Nederland. I was referring to the fact that many foreigners assume that Holland is the official name, and quite a few (like Joey :P) aren't even familiar with the term "the Netherlands". Also, not every Dutchman appreciates people using the term "Holland" so loosely.
@EnigmaDrath fyi im as dutch as you can be. I have neverrr heard of the difference between using holland or the Netherlands. Also: there is no one who cares if you say holland in stead of. Where do you get these stories? Are you even dutch?
@staalhaan87 : There are no traffic jams, air pollution, over-population and foreigners in Drenthe, and we like to keep it that way. So please stay living in Holland.

Unfortunately, their attempts to civilise the Drente savages have proved to be futile.
@staalhaan87 It's true. Drenthe misses dearly the civilisation brought by economic refugees fleeing the ignorant and desolate hellholes they originated from. You can keep your urban "culture" and stick it where the sun never shines.

@ChaosTheoryMetal There was this one episode of house where they get a Dutch webcamgirl to translate some old Dutch text, and I am pretty sure that Actress was really Dutch because for once, the accent was spot on. (Might also have spoken Dutch, I don't remember)

@evanderep Bullsh*t. And even if it was true, it still accounts for the average Dutch person. Also you saying this makes me doubt wether you know where Washington is on a map.
I agree it is confusing, dutch people are the people from the Netherlands.
Some people say Holland but Holland is a state of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands with the town Amsterdam. Our country is between the North see and Germany. Under Denmark and above Belgium and France.
We cal Germany "Duitsland".
Dutch is the standard language as it is taught in schools and used by authorities in the Netherlands, Flanders (a part of Belgium), Suriname, and Aruba, as well as the Netherlands Antilles.
First of all, Holland is not a state of the Netherlands, it's two provinces. Second, Amsterdam is a city, not a town. Third, we are more under Norway than under Denmark. And fourth and final, the Netherlands Antilles doesn't exist anymore.
@FransPannekeet Holland is NOT a state of the Netherlands. The Netherlands has 2 states with the word Holland IN it. Also, the Netherlands is not under Denmark, it doesn't even border Denmark!
Also, North see???? SEA. I can't believe you got so many thumbs up with all of your mistakes.
And I don't think a lot of people who're not dutch or german will understand how to pronounce 'Duitsland', I think it's better to say that german people are called 'Deutschen' in 'Germany/Deutschland'.
@staalhaan87 they're not the same language.. it's like saying.. spanish, french and romanian are the same language.. they might have been the same languague like 800 years ago or something but nowdays noo.. or else we can say.. english is the same as norwegian coz it was one languague 1500 years ago or something
@Svanberg123 Worse. English evolved from Anglo-Saxon. This refers to the peoples and their languages who invaded the islands in ancient times. Their origin? Present day Lower Saxony in Germany.
@6taffy7 yes it is a germanic language becouse belgium the netherlands and german were one counrty way and way back around the time of the romans, but it evolved into a whole new language, it's like spannish and Portuguese. they sound alike but are not the same at all.
@hijtohema Stop arguing for the sake of arguing, bitte. Have you seen 'Goldfinger'? I know I do. I vividly remember a scene in Amsterdam, in which James Bond pretends to be Dutch, and he says 'bitte' when opening a door for a Dutchman.
@staalhaan87 I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. You said it right: James Bond PRETENDED to be dutch. And used a word no dutchman would ever use. Linguistically ductch and german separated and became separate languages around the 10th or 11th century with one of those consonant shifts.
@PLMRTW Yes, because you can see who is Dutch from the outside. You can for example clearly see that your princes and national Dutch football team are clearly all Dutch...
@5806356 I sincerely hope for you that you're not american, because if you are I could give you a rant. The netherlands have always been an immigration land and refuge. So yes: the dutch people consist of a melting pot or origins from all over the world. My own ancestes immigrated from Germany or Austria in the 18th century. And i propably have a drop of french blood somewhere from the line of my grandmother.
@hijtohema No, not an American. That is why I'm saying that you can't say the women definitely isn't Dutch because of her appearance. Hence the reverence to the Dutch princes who is of Argentinian decent and the Dutch football-team that always has a lot of colored players in it.
a lot if people and filmproducers confuse Germany with Holland because duch looks like Duits but duch people are from holland and german people from germany
90% of Americans I've met in my life (and I've met quite a few) haven't got a clue where the Netherlands are. A couple of New Yorkers didn't have a clue their city was founded by us, in fact, at first they didn't even believe me and had to Google it to verify it!
@Heyitsaicha95 No. Only the Netherlands/Holland=the same country . Belgians are from Belgium, but we have about the same language. Only have the Belgians another dialect version of it.
Nee. Duitsland? Nee. Amerika? NEE. Engeland? Misschien in Londen. Wees blij man.
@Cappac202 Oke, zullen we ABN gaan spreken?

Dutch is the standard language as it is taught in schools and used by authorities in the Netherlands, Flanders (a part of Belgium), Suriname, and Aruba, as well as the Netherlands Antilles.
FransPannekeet 1 month ago 30
@FransPannekeet
First of all, Holland is not a state of the Netherlands, it's two provinces. Second, Amsterdam is a city, not a town. Third, we are more under Norway than under Denmark. And fourth and final, the Netherlands Antilles doesn't exist anymore.
Just to clarify.

And in the Netherlands are a lot of people smarter then other people..........
LOL
FransPannekeet 3 weeks ago

mrmag1cc 2 weeks ago
@FransPannekeet Holland is NOT a state of the Netherlands. The Netherlands has 2 states with the word Holland IN it. Also, the Netherlands is not under Denmark, it doesn't even border Denmark!
Also, North see???? SEA. I can't believe you got so many thumbs up with all of your mistakes.
And I don't think a lot of people who're not dutch or german will understand how to pronounce 'Duitsland', I think it's better to say that german people are called 'Deutschen' in 'Germany/Deutschland'.
lumalush 2 weeks ago
@lumalush German and Dutch are the same language man, get a grip. I know they are different countries but linguistically they are the same.
staalhaan87 2 weeks ago
@staalhaan87 they're not the same language.. it's like saying.. spanish, french and romanian are the same language.. they might have been the same languague like 800 years ago or something but nowdays noo.. or else we can say.. english is the same as norwegian coz it was one languague 1500 years ago or something
Svanberg123 2 weeks ago
@Svanberg123 Worse. English evolved from Anglo-Saxon. This refers to the peoples and their languages who invaded the islands in ancient times. Their origin? Present day Lower Saxony in Germany.

6taffy7 1 week ago
@6taffy7 yes it is a germanic language becouse belgium the netherlands and german were one counrty way and way back around the time of the romans, but it evolved into a whole new language, it's like spannish and Portuguese. they sound alike but are not the same at all.
yokinakitsu 1 week ago
Dutch and german are both germanic languages but nevertheless very different.
hijtohema 1 week ago
hijtohema 1 week ago
@hijtohema Stop arguing for the sake of arguing, bitte. Have you seen 'Goldfinger'? I know I do. I vividly remember a scene in Amsterdam, in which James Bond pretends to be Dutch, and he says 'bitte' when opening a door for a Dutchman.
staalhaan87 1 week ago
@staalhaan87 I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. You said it right: James Bond PRETENDED to be dutch. And used a word no dutchman would ever use. Linguistically ductch and german separated and became separate languages around the 10th or 11th century with one of those consonant shifts.

And i propably have a drop of french blood somewhere from the line of my grandmother.
hijtohema 1 week ago
@hijtohema No, not an American. That is why I'm saying that you can't say the women definitely isn't Dutch because of her appearance. Hence the reverence to the Dutch princes who is of Argentinian decent and the Dutch football-team that always has a lot of colored players in it.

90% of Americans I've met in my life (and I've met quite a few) haven't got a clue where the Netherlands are. A couple of New Yorkers didn't have a clue their city was founded by us, in fact, at first they didn't even believe me and had to Google it to verify it!

Nee. Duitsland? Nee. Amerika? NEE. Engeland? Misschien in Londen. Wees blij man.
Tadeusnikos 1 month ago
222demon222 1 month ago
@Cappac202 Oke, zullen we ABN gaan spreken?
