Jerry Bilik was one of my professors in college. In addition to his concert works, he arranged many of the songs used by The University of Michigan Marching Band. He is a musical genius, great teacher, and very personable.
Good balance with all the instruments!! (a - for themanizi) Loud low brass is not always "good" low brass. It needs to blend and balance. These guys did a great job of that. (b - For Doombah and Drummerlead) - They played the percussion break as written. If you played something different than this part, it was re-written from the original score. All in all, I like the way this was performed.
i get the chills listening to this... We played this in grade school competition and won overall state... it was awsome... i was in 7th grade... 1st chair tuba... wow... our low brass section was WAY louder... im gonna find that record and upload it
@themanizi *Thunderous Clapping* Woot for 1st chair Tuba!!! I am too! I'm a freshman and we're playing this. I beat the senior out of first chair though!
I played this on tuba back in my high school days. It was amazing! The best part was without a doubt The Yellow Rose of Texas. When my band did it, our percussion section went to town for about 30 seconds to depict the war, and let it fade out on a cymbal roll...the the french horns came in...first time I heard it, it brought a tear to my eye! Fantastic job on your performance!
I am a little disappointed on that one part where percussion gets a solo part. In our community college band we percussionists got to do some raucous free style playing to depict the "battle scene" and I thought I would get this from this performance instead of just a crecendoing rumble from the snare drum.
Your band sounds pretty amazing, good job! You guys have excellent tone, sound quality, and intonation. Not to mention great expression. Well done! I'm the only tuba player in my high school band, and we're playing this! Thanks for the wonderful example!
my school band played this at our winter concert. :-) we played it with faster tempo thought, lol i guess it was because we were excited or something lol. GO TROMBONES!!!!
hmm... you're a little flat, your articulation is iffy, bass needs to assert itself more and the dynamics are pretty blah. Tell your director to take more license with the tempo! It's a lot more fun to listen to the first few bits after the intro at breakneck speed.
Don't listen to PJ, (Comment under me). He can't even play this song. Or any song at that.. He had trouble on They Went That Away. xD He has no clue what hes talking about...btw.. GO ALTO SAXOPHONES.
My school just played this along with stars and stripes and salvation is created at MICCA(Whole Mass competition) and scored silver. This sounds ok but its very high pitched and there needs to be more of the bass and more tuba. Also this is very bland and the dynamics's are not that great, also the fact that my band is about this size but 5 alto's 2 tenors 2 bari's and 1 tube, tho we are portioned differently but its not the best I've ever hear.
I do agree that the parts are high. I played this song on oboe recently for a concert and there are several notes at the very top of the instrument's range. Otherwise I really enjoyed the piece.
awesome song
