@es30381 Probably, yes. It looks like he may have altered things like levels and saturation; but as most of these are HDR (High Dynamic Range - three pictures of different exposures, blended to get a full spectrum of lighting), they probable didn't need much editing.
I'm sixteen, and I try not to edit any of my pictures at all; but when I speak to older, more professional photographers, they pretty much all tweak their photos a little bit.
@TheMightyPnut Yeah I thought it must have been HDR (and I had just pressed post when he said the thing about HDR hahaha) but I wasn't sure. I am around 16 too and I just want to get the best from my pictures straight out of the camera, you know? :)
@es30381 Yeah, I've been shooting for years, and I'm kinda getting the hang of it lol XD The best thing is to practise, and push yourself. I grew up with film SLRs, where you could only take about 35 shots - these days, people take 1000s of shots per day, and as cameras are digital now, we're not forced to get it right on the first shot like we used to be =[
ROFL you left the video camera man in there LOL. gorgous pics I love the way they turned out. I learned the trick of using the timmer to take long exposure shots of the night sky by trial and error, works wonders. Eliminates any initial vibration from clicking the shutter button.
One of my favourite of your 15 minute challenges Gavin. Those HDR images were stunning. It would be great if you could do a video or two of your photoshop work on creating some of these images. Hope you had a shower before you sat down to to photoshop these shots :). many thanks again.
Hi Gavin, I like the first indoor image with the blue chair & toilet in the background. Did you use an pre recorded action in PS? I like the retro feel; high contrast, oversharpened, vignette etc. Or did you just go throught the paces yourself?
It really brought out the grime. Did you tell the Shire you are putting these on YT? HAHAHA Time for a new clubhouse or WHAT?!
I have my Black Rapid RS-W1 (W1 designed for woman) and I love it. Thanks Gavin for putting me onto the Black Rapid Brand, I thought it was a little pricie til I put it on, then I realised its worth every cent. :) Cant wait for your next 15 minute challenge.
Firstly great video's and I've learned a lot from both you and your compadre Jared Polin.
Just a small gripe with this video. You took a shot close to the bar with the central column of your tripod extended. I was always taught to extend the legs before contemplating using the central column. Was there a particular reason for doing that?
ur videos taught me a lot of stuff, i just want ur opinion on the canon efs 18-200mm 3.5 to 5.6 lens, i am pretty hard at cash at this moment and want a walk around lens as i am going to America in next few weeks and dnt wanna carry a lot of lenses , i had the twin lens kit but i sold those lenses , i got a Canon 550D
Mr. Gavin you are AMAZING! just one question for a beginner what camera and lens would you recommend without a really high price point if you can. Thanks. again Awesome work and love your videos please keep them coming!
Love you videos Gavin. Particular these 15min ones. As it show you can take a snap shot of virtually anything and make it into a interesting photograph. Thanks to Photoshop and a bit of creative imagination. Man you could make a dog turd look good...
I love watching these 15 minute challenges. It really inspires me to go around town looking for photo opportunities. Now only if I had a camera then that would help. How many different camera's do you have and would the Nikon D90 be a good choice for it's price? Maybe you can just give me one of yours lol
Hey Gavin, I have recently subbed to you and realized that you seem to know your photography very well so I was wondering what camera and equipment you would recommend for someone wanting to start photography. (My dad and I want to start) :D Thanks
Gavin, maybe you could do a video about processing one of those HDR pics from importing to publishing? Do you edit the photos in ACR first? Or do you merge them to HDR first and then edit them inside PS (add contrast/vignet) etc.
Im not a fan of HDR, localised contrast suffers, the midtones end up all milky. But the princible is there, though i would decrease the exposure between photos, to about 1/2 a stop. But a few of those shots, namely the photo of the bar really does warrant using HDR. You can bring back detail, without that "HDR look", of things just looking sickly, with weird shadows, and things that your eye cant see.
Gavin, great job of making "lemonade out of lemons". These are the types of shots I would take, but my girlfriend says "they are interesting, but who would buy them?". I think they are artisitic and it doesn't matter who buys them.

Is HDR a feature in the camera? If so, I have the canon t1i as it is a good beginner camera for me, therefore, does it have this feature? And does it have AE bracketing??
another nice video; this is off topic but I'm considering getting a wacom tablet for my photoshop work, I've read others but whats your thoughts, maybe a video?
Why do you use ISO when you don't need to? I find it just adds unnecessary graininess to my images, and I usually leave it at its lowest setting since it's non-defeatable.
Is this just because of my camera (Canon EOS DR XTi w/18mm-55mm), and can a camera like the Canon 60D, 7D or 5D handle ISO better?
@TurboLag23 Yes. MUCH better. I shoot a Sony A850 - which is Sony's D-SLR offering in the same range as the Canon 5DII. And, there's really no perceptible difference in noise between 100 to 400 ISO. At 800 ISO you begin to notice a little creeping in, but it's still FAR from being a "noisy" image. 1600 ISO is still pretty usable for most applications. And, above 800 ISO, the 5D handles noise much better than my A850. (below 1600 they're practically identical)
@TurboLag23 of course, knowing that higher end cameras can handle ISO higher with much less "noise" might still leave you with your first question: why did Gavin use it? Reasons to consider: most lenses are sharpest around f8-f11, several stops darker than wide open (each stop down halves the light hitting the sensor), couple that with the need to keep the shutter speed fast enough to defeat "shake"/blur (for handheld) and you find that increased ISO may be the ticket to make it all work!
@PhotoGavin ...and totally expensive. They're great straps, alright! But, I don't know what they sell for where you are, but over here, in Canada, they sell for the Canadian equivalent of about $60.00 British pounds. I've played around with a friend's BR R-7, and liked it a lot - great strap. But, I can never seem to quite get myself to part with that kind of cash for a strap - especially not when there's all sorts of old, classic glass floating around on E-bay for not too much more than that.
Hi Gevin!! First of all I have to say that I totally love your pictures!! You're such a great photographer!
I think it would be great for us (normal photographers) if you could show how you did the photo in 6:30. How did you do the effect here and how do you get the nice colors in the pictures. I'm tryind this a lot, but I don't get such nice colors!! The shiny blue or the orange...
@FallenKain Orlando was last week :-( But if you convince Adobe to get over next year I'll buy you a beer :-) Photoshop World Orlando was Awesome BTW!
@PhotoGavin Oh no! Damn, I'm upset that I missed you! Alright, well, I'll tell ya what, if you shoot me a private message, I'll drop you my email, and you'll be more than welcome to stay at my place next time your over. Be happy to take you out for a couple rounds! They just opened a bar here that's got over 100 beers in stock. Where did you speak in Orlando?

I would put a link to my urbex site but I don't know if youtube will sensor it. "james dolan urbex" on Google will bring it up 1st though.
How can you hold your hands so still? I have trouble under 1/100 shutter speed. If I choose liveview, it look like there's an earth quake or something.
@Kadadj live view is not really benificial unless on a tripod really :) just hold your hand really close on teh lens towards the body hold your breath and stay still
@ramdawgy Yeah, I dont actually use live view, It was just an example. It's really annoying though, to have shaking hands. It's weird, I can play guitar solos where there are 7 notes each second perfectly, but I cant hold a camera still.
@Kadadj its just practice hey :) and just hold everything really closely and HOLD YOUR BREATH it helps alot im able to usually shoot at about 1/20th without IS most of the time
hello gavin! im just wondering, what kind of effects you use in photoshop that gives you the best effects yet it can be done within 3-5 minutes for an average user like me :)
@shinichi13 Best advice... shoot RAW. I tend to push the contast sliders fairly hard, but it's not to everyones taste. Experiment and create your own style.
@marc0241 i think he uses the canon 24-105 f4 L lens...as always :)

@Kadadj its just practice hey :) and just hold everything really closely and HOLD YOUR BREATH it helps alot im able to usually shoot at about 1/20th without IS most of the time
ramdawgy 11 months ago
Are you shooting in full manual mode for these shots?

hello gavin! im just wondering, what kind of effects you use in photoshop that gives you the best effects yet it can be done within 3-5 minutes for an average user like me :)
shinichi13 11 months ago
@shinichi13 Best advice... shoot RAW. I tend to push the contast sliders fairly hard, but it's not to everyones taste. Experiment and create your own style.

is it still a HDR picture, if i take just one shot in RAW mode and paint the different exposures in lightroom? that should be the same result.

Great video as always Gavin. i have one question. is that blackrapid strap? if so, do you recommend getting one?
Thanks.
bairak88 11 months ago
@bairak88 Yes that's the Black Rapid RS-Sport. It's a really great strap if, like me, you hate wearing round the neck style straps.
PhotoGavin 11 months ago
@bairak88 Looks like an RS-7 and the BRAD accessory. This guy Jared Polin has a cool review of the strap.

What is the number of stops that you use for HDR in bracketing mode?
mariandeacu 11 months ago
@mariandeacu Either 3 or 5 depending on the contrast levels. For these images it was mostly 3 shots, two stops apart.
PhotoGavin 11 months ago
Hi Gavin,
i like your Videos and i like your spots too.
The only thing i don't like so much is, that you shop the photos too much so they look unreal. HDR is nice too, but only if you don't see it too much
