@PinePowerLI sad how that happens. that engine is an eagle diesel engine i know the sound anywhere since most all the buses where i live 30, 40 and 60 foot buses all have eagle engines. the shorter buses have the smaller eagle and the bigger buses have the bigger engine. to bad most of all the buses have a retarder making the bus lag from a dead stop. i wish they could start moving the second they give it gas not 5 to 10 seconds then go.
@qwandiddy call the STM n tell them that, cause I really dont think they give a shit about these amazing Classics. Theyre gonna do the same thing with those buses like the did with the fishbowls.
Lately, I have seen this older Orion on the 2, 5, , 14, 25, 40, and 61. Other than that, it's all newer Orions from here on in, which I kinda don't like.
They need too, Its a shame that NYCMTA stopped ordering more Orion 5s after /1999/ 2000 models, They need some Bee Line 2006 models for local and some of 2009 models for NY Bus Service.
I always thought that these buses, especially the Neoplan AN460A's were Front Wheel Drive. I have no idea how the Neoplan series is a Rear-Wheel Drive. Bee-Line should have an All Wheel Drive bus.
I agree about the Neos, but all articulated buses around these parts are "pushers", meaning the drive wheels are way the hell in the back. NYC MTA uses New Flyer artics, which are also pushers. Articulated buses that use the "B" axle as drive wheels (pullers) are rare around here, and seem to be more prone to problems, and can't do the low floor deal, which seem to be the norm in the latest metro bus contracts.
I actually have seen an Artic run on the 8 on December 7 on my way to school. It was going onto Central Park Avenue. It read, "8 Central Ave". I was surprised when I saw what it read.
Bring those Orion Buses to san Juan Puerto Rico! The 2004+2005+2007 models here, about 95 in total, 40 are dead! Overheated, caught fire, transmissions break, bad suspension and already have Rust on the roofs of great many of them. DaimlerChrysler Owns them. Im not a driver, but know a good amount of drivers and really do not like Orion Buses. Novabus, Gilig and Flxible Were the best ones out there! Plus they cant go through deep water, where here roads flood
Well, the fixibles and the 900 series are all retired from the Bee-Line. Well, do you think that sending some Neoplan AN460s over there would be a good idea? It's a long bus that can hold a lot of passengers, so the Bee-Line uses them on the 1W, 3, 5, 6, 7, 20, 21, 40, 41, 42, 60, 62, and 92.
I dont remember which one were the Neoplan AN460 model. Any Pics? If they are the articulated ones, we can't have them here. There were some in the 80's, but did not last because many of the streets here could not accommodate them. Many of the turns are a little to tight for them. Pretty soon the bus company has to retire 1997 models, and there are no buses to replace those. And NovaBus is only working canadian market with LFS, and the 24 here, 16 are gone!
These buses are tough. A lot of people underestimate them. I know the are capable of doing this, because I've experience this. (No I am not a driver, i am a student.)
In Edmonton, Canada we just got a big snow storm overnight and I saw a couple of busses and cars stuck the same ,ore or less the same way on my way to work.
@ARTICULATED450 hehe...winter 2010 is coming up fast. good luck on tuckahoe road. if you get stuck - watch out for me taking a video or trying to help you get out. watch your air pressure, watch your swervy ass for signs, lampposts and pedestrians, and floor the sonofabitch.
well that driver is me to let you know i was on youtube searhing for beeline bus videos and this came up and i said wow somebody recorded me in this mess.
The flexies were gone after 2008 because of the EPA's ban on 2 stroke diesel engines. The flexies had Detroit Diesel 6v92s. I miss the sound of them screaming up Tuckahoe Rd.
I like the whistling sound they make especially when I was younger and whenever me and my family were in the shopping plaza in Tarrytown Road and I could hear the whistling sound of those buses when they were running on the 1W, 5, and 15. I want them back. The 4, 12, 13, 14, 25, 30, 42, and the 61 all need the Neoplan AN460's because they are all always crowded, exclusively the 4, 25, and the 30. The 12 needs it because it goes a really far distance. The 61 also needs it since it is like the 60.
I must say, this is why Bee-Line Buses shut down during snowstorms because there are just so many hills and so much snow that they can't keep up. Glad the driver was able to get out.
On a side note, I see that was Orion 05.501 #440. How did the Orion 05.501 #600s series do? They have a lot more power in their engines.
How come after 2007 I no longer saw any fixibles. I know that they ran on the 1W, 5, 7, 8, 12, 15, 40, 42, 45, 53, 54, 63 and 66. They even had properly scheduled runs on the 6, and I think also the 30 since on the schedule timetables for the 6, and the 30 an asterisk next to a given time on the schedule meant that the trip wasn't Wheelchair accessible. I've only seen a fixible on the 6 but never the 30. Some rare encounters for me were seeing a Neoplan AN460A on the 27, and a fixible on the 40.
had the same basic thing happen to me on the 19th as well in Michigan.... snow was way deep. but with the gillig i just floored it to melt a few inches of snow, backed up and gun it up the hill. and you are righe it is a helpless feeling. ( i called a road supervisor and he said I was number 7 on the stuck bus list. ) I sure as heck feel for this driver
As a driver, that's got to be a really helpless feeling. No pickup truck can pull out something that heavy. You know, those buses weigh something like 14 tons. It was really cool that guy helped and got him out. Meanwhile waaaay up the route, someone's wondering, "gee, wonder why the bus is late tonight?".
I can imagine. He was stuck at least 45 minutes. I walked to the pizza place and had a slice between the first part of the video and where he gets out.

What's the difference in engines? Aren't they both DD series 50's?
bronxfireradio 3 years ago
Well, the difference is the NEWER Orion 05.501 #601-704 series has Cummins ISM engines, which in my opinion have more power than the DD50 engines.
