What I don't get is the name Fyrish haas a "Y" in it. The letter "Y" doesn't exist in Gaelic yet this place is in Scotland unless it's in Wales. Could someone please clarify this for me?
Fyrish is in Scotland , Fyrish lands were once lands which belonged to the Earl of Ross, which were forfeited to the crown in 1475. It is in fact Fyrish hill and not cnoc Fyrish but is usually refered to as cnoc Fyrish. I doubt if the name is gaelic but I will leave that one for the buffs.
worked and lived in the highlands and if you ever get the opportunity do it ,get off the beaten path check out the small vilages and towns the little pubs with the old guys playing folk music it is magical ,excellent experience ,the characters you meet and the scenery is breathtaking.
I think if most people knew the significance of this video and the series of photographs they might not have been so keen to try and hijack it with their comments - John, it's been four years since Geoff died and to watch this video still helps us to remember his final resting place - thanks for doing it and for always being a great friend. I'm a Scot's American. All of my fathers side is product of Argyle all my mother people were ulster scots. Yavru is right. We didn't chose to be thousands of miles away from the place that is ethnically our homeland nor does that distance dim the pride and adoration we hold for the same. The greatest thing Scotland ever lost was the 30 million diaspora son's and daughters. The Scottish nation is more organic that the land it is a race of people who love their culture whether on the land or not.
To visit the highlands is beautiful, I have been and loved it. Its peaceful, and calm. The highlands have something about them that leaves you in an awe

i love capercaillie, and it compliments the video well.... i've been to scotland once, anbd want to go back so badly... such a beautiful place, rich in history....
The band is called capercaillie , the lead singer is a girl called Karen Matheson. Google now do lyrics. type in this song " Breisleach " and you will get both english and gaelic words.
yeah, that'd be very nice. could you also write me the galic text? i regret that i have no gaelic. once i tried to learn bits of this language but it's very hard. there are almost no similarities to german... ;o))
cnoc simply means hill.. Fyrish is the name given to an ancient area of land found just north of Evanton, Ross-shire, Scotland. The lands of Fyrish are now part of the Novar Estate. However the Fyrish lands were once lands which belonged to the Earl of Ross, which were forfeited to the crown in 1475.
The lands of Fyrish were later granted to Sir William Keith by King James VI of Scotland in 1587. Fyrish was then divided into four parts.
in 1707, the act of union was passed which meant that scotland and england were united under one monarchy and one government. It was Queen Elizabeth I's successor, Mary Queen of Scots' son King James, became king of both Scotland and England and that is how this came about, but in 1999 we were given a parliament in Holyrood, Edinburgh with an elected first minister (at the moment it is SNP Alex Salmond. Just if you wanted to know.
I'm also a bit ingnorant to Scotland's move towards independance so I have to ask. Basically, Scotland wants nothing to do with England or the rest of Great Britain....is this not so?? How and why do Scots feel they'd be better off independant from England?? This sounds interesting...Please explain.
You have to take note that not all Scottish people want independence. If it was to go to a vote i think it would be very close. What the SNP want is basically Scotland to be its own independent nation and to break away from the UK. Wether that would be financially or economically beneficial to Scotland has yet to be proved but i dont think it would. P.S If Scotland was to leave the "Union" it would most certainly join the EU
It's not that we don't want anything to do with the other UK nations. On the contrary, we (some of us) just feel that it would be in Scotland's best interests to separate from union. The "union" never has and never will be a union of equals. Unlike AxMxO I believe we would be better off both financially and culturally. The evidence is there, just not many people bother to look for it. Instead they get their info from the unionist newspapers like the "Sun" and "Daily Record".
It's not equals as far as the UK goes Scotland is seen like a region, like Yorkshire. If it truly where equal all four constituting countries would have first ministers and parliaments and jointly would decide what was best for the union or one Prime minister above the four First Ministers.
because.. it's an instinct. it's their own culture, not englands. they should have their own right to have their own country, their own government, own land. It's something every country in the world wants, to function without another country over their shoulder.
Scotland has its own government, land, flag, country etc. Your behind the times. Most Scots don't want full independance as its financially not viable.
Scotland's North Sea Oil and Whisky Industry is about the only revenue asset the Westminster Government has got left coming in now. They sold everything else off or gambled it on the stock exchange and lost. I dont think it is in Scotland's financial interest to continue subsidising England. The South should learn to stand on their own feet. It is in their best interest in the long term. After all - who wants to be a lame duck?
Cant belive biggots like you still exist. The union was formed to help everyone, not just you. The only freedom left is the freedom of speech, so use it sparingly and to good use.
It is not bigotry to point out that the sweetie shop has been ram raided by stock exchange gamblers, corrupt bankers and conniving politicians who have only been looking after themselves. We would be much better off opening our own shop. Scotland would have to look after its own interests. That is not bogotry. It is common sense.
So a Scotsman can look at his passport and see nationality Scottish. Like when a Frenchman looks at his passport or an American looks at his. We don't hate England, in fact I'd fight for them to have an independent parliament too, I'd stand beside them in any war, but why should we not have the same rights as any other country?
I'm British in the sence my country is on an Island called Britain. Just like I'm European as that is the contenent I'm a part of. What is Scotland then? A region? A region that enters the world cup and has it's own parlament hmmmm.
Thank you for sharing this truly touching amazming video:)..Bonnie Scotland i love you with all my heart and soul and my soul keeps being pulled towards you for it is a looking to come home even though i was not born there.I feel such a strong connection to you.SCOTLAND WILL BE FREE AS WILLIAM WALLACE HAD FOUGHT WITH ALL HIS HEART AND SOUL TO MAKE AS SUCH."Oh Flower Of Scotland we will see your likes again":)xxx
