I could never appreciate this anthem as a young child, required to always sing at primary school. Now older, I can greatly appreciate it, though I don't consider myself particularly patriotic (well, not the kind of stubborn patriotism that says 'God bless Australia and nowhere else' anyway, though I greatly appreciate this nation)
If anyone's interested, I've composed a short, 'epic' symphonic reinterpretation in minor key and uploaded it, if you care to watch/comment/rate:
My Version "Advance ashtrailer where?" Ashtray-uns all let us be coy For we are dumb and twee! With acid soils and pointless royals A fuck up guaranteed! Our lands are raped beyond repair the bush woodchipped for free! In futile rage, rattle your cage Advance ashtrailer where? With Ho Chi Mins Shit Eating Grin, Advance ashtrailer where?
I happen to like it too, but indigenous Australians (you know, the original ones who were here just a few tens of thousands of years before European invasion) neither like it nor see it as representative of them.
Judith is a great Australian, lauded and awarded by the Australian Government on many occasions. She has made her version of Advance Australia Fair public now not to offer it as an alternative anthem or as competition for the current anthem but to raise awareness of this issue.
This song is terrible. I'm sorry, but our national anthem doesn't need to be so bloody lovey dovey. I see this as more of a parody than a new possibility.
To the person suggesting "still call australia home" as a new anthem; that's just silly.
Because Australia is a wonderful country (one might venture far enough as to say it is my favorite), and I think that this is a very beautiful song, even on its own.
...I also wish that people had less stereotypes against Americans...I hate to think that wherever I go, if people don't see or hear about me first, they'll automatically assume I'm a imbecilic, fat person (neither of which is true)...It's one of the saddest things about my life. I love the world, but it doesn't love me back...
Probably for many of the same reasons Aussies take somewhat of an interest in ours!? This American happens to like your country and it's anthem and there is nothing wrong with the older version! And to my fellow citizens, if others don't like our country that's THEIR problem get over your juvenile sensitivity!
moparmtn: I could not agree more. The US national anthem is hard to sing, and the lyrics are about the war of 1812 with England, now our allies. Duh! Judith Durham is to be commended. I am so proud of her, it almost makes you wish you were Australian.
Thank you Auspete, great to hear a version with words that we all grew up with. I also nominate Peter Allen's, "I still call Australia Home" as our National Anthem
I wish they would change the National Anthem in the USA... it is the most butchered song on the planet and impossible for most singers to sing. We have songs such as America trhe Beautiful that describe the country and its beauty and is easily singable... I must say Judith is on the right track... as this world needs unity. I pray for her and that the Lord will deliver her vision for humanity, peace and freedom...
So timely Judith with these changes so overdue. Now all our indigenous people and those from other nations can at last sing their hearts out as one with pride and understanding and acceptance. What gifts you have been blessed with. Maybe you can come up with Colours for My Flag just to move us further forward and help deal with that issue. Great work!
I just heard of this on CBC Overnight's broadcast of Radio Australia. It's a very canny approach that Ms. Durham has taken. I'd wager that the government will wait until they sense that the public is good and ready, and then "lead" the charge to change the words.
Makeitreal, it was politically shrewd of Ms Durham to advise the government as this is a genuine proposal to change the words of the country's official anthem for which the goverrnment's agreement is essential. I believe the same would apply in gthe USA should a similar situation ever arise there.
Yes, I'm sure that any change to the US anthem would have to be "enacted" by the government. So I can see that her deference to the PM now might "grease the skids" for her changes ultimately becoming official.
By the way, I had never heard the Aussie anthem prior to this video. I have to say it seems to have an unusually good melody for a national anthem. But that impression might have been influenced by who was singing it.
To a U.S. citizen, it's jarring to hear Judith state matter-of-factly that she had to ask the government permission to record her lyrics, a form of free expression. Then again, we now seem headed in the same direction ourselves.
It's probably truer to say that she thought it appropriate to advise the Government of her intentions in case of any negative repercussions later. The Government could have done absolutely nothing to stop Judith, or anyone else, writing anything (freedom of speech being no issue in Australia either), but it was important to her to get official approval. Her plan was obviously for the new lyrics to be performed publicly at some point, so I think this was a very wise move.
It was a free event. Had it been a paid event, or had there been announcements and signs at the hall forbidding videoing, naturally I would have abided by this. I just video'd until someone told me to stop, and my battery ran out long before anyone was ever going to.
Say what you might , but Judith Durham achieved some success at least where politics has completely failed

Sounds beautiful. But maybe because they are both amazing performers

When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
"With all her faults we love her still"
"Britannia rules the wave."
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Why are Americans looking at our national anthem? I don't have anything against Americans. I'm just wondering why you are interested

No official change as yet Cameron, just a proposal at this stage. Hopefully one day though, in our lifetime.
