I love the Grey Knights; the personal heraldry is what's missing on the Space Marines in general. The books always allude to the fact that Space Marines adorn their armour with iconographic displays of their personal glory in campaigns and battles. When I create my Space Marine army I want them to be like walking mausoleums.
@darmamu Of course you can go away from the story, I'm not really saying that you can't paint them gold, but it's really gonna look strange, but after all, do what you want. Anyway I think a grey knights army or even any other army can't look sober painting them gold... Maybe you can paint a hero or so with some gold, but a whole army? Not sure of that ^^

I hope you've since corrected Dragonet to Dagonet. Dragonet isn't the name of a knight of the round table, whereas Dagonet, without an r, is. Though he's usually presented as a jester in most stories and not actually a knight. However, in Le Morte D'Arthur he was knighted and sent to joust another knight to humiliate the other knight (for fighting a jester).
Ok, here are the rules, from here on, studio updates MUST be done by the painters if they desire. It really adds something else to the feel of the update when you get the inner thoughts of the artists that do the work. love it.
What is your colors pallete for that metal tone. It looks like you applied a white to it but as the model is turned it fades or is that camera lighting coming off a metallic
@JackoLantern007 I think he means to go out to places that has rust and stuff and mimic that to know what actuall weathering will do to a certain metal or something. apposed to trying to remember what something might look like and then being far from it.
@JackoLantern007 You have to kind of squint and see just the colours in what you're looking at instead of trying to paint the object that you think you recognize. Takes a bit of practice to do. Hell, I still can't.
@JackoLantern007 I take it as, like when he says 'i spent a lot of time at the junkyard', he means that if you want to paint rust, go look at rust, not what you think rust looks like. Not sure if that makes sense or if im even correct.
@JackoLantern007 I guess he means that if you have to paint a metallic sword, don't paint it grey then highlight it, just paint it with a metallic color you like, and that's all. Even if he doesn't mean it, I think it's not a good idea to do too much highlights when you don't need it. In real life, when you see a shiny sword, you can see clear areas and dark areas due to the light, so if you can get that shiny result just applying one coat of metallic color, why would you need highlights?
@JackoLantern007 It means, you might have this pre-conception of what metal looks like, and it may be way off, Go out look for some rusted metal, look for some pollished brass, try to achieve THAT look in your painting rather then just the generic "Shiny grey" that most painters make metal.

I keep trying to understand this entire concept of paint things as you see them and not as you think you see them. Im not sure what it exactly means.

@JackoLantern007 it basically means using reference material for colours and textures instead of just picking the colours out of the air
