  • My friend made that so I went on the internet 2 find a better 1 and he sent me a pic of a 4 and a half foot long gar awesome lure I have 3 in tackle box

  • I am making one of those right now.

  • AWESOME video!! Ive been trying so desperatly hard to hook these gar and I never can. I cant wait to head back out to the river and give this a shot!!!! Thanks again!!!

  • Thanks for the video! I've had gar go after top water buzz baits before, and have a ton of old skirtless ones that'll make good rope lures. I've put some together, but the down side is I've got to wait till tomorrow,...

  • @djmasonfam Good Luck.. Let me know if you catch any.. Be ready with some good gloves.. They are delicious to eat too by the way.. (DO NOT EAT THEEGGS THOUGH...)

  • All I had was yellow so I'm going to try that. Ill post again if I have ant luck

  • Does it matter what color rope you use?

  • @xxluckycharms123 I'm not really sure. I only use white and I buy it in 100' lengths. I had a friend try red and green once, but didn't have any luck. Let me know if you have any success with the other colors. Thanks for watching and posting! Doug

  • Hi rippac86, I'm not sure what it is you are asking for exactly. This video shows the lure I use to catch longnose gar. You should never really attempt to 'hook' a gar as they have boney structures that are difficult at best to actually hook. If you have made the lure correctly and you get a bite, you should have the fish. This will probably not work with an alligator gar if that's what your seeing.

    Hope that helps!

    Tight lines!

    Doug

  • can u show a video on how to make a rig that a hooks the gar.. i used this same rig but i missed about 40 gars in 1 day.. i found a creek in south texas that is flooded with gar... the only 1 i caugt was from a double hook and it hooked him in the back

  • is the purpose of the rope to appear as bait like a worm?

if so that's cool because you bait wont' fall off easy like other stuff does :)

  • u hooked rope in the wrong place

  • @superd62 I'm not sure what you are talking about. This has been posted on here for months. I've used these rigs for years. I think you must be mistaken. :)

  • @superd62 I'm not sure what you are talking about. This has been posted on here for months with several users making and using them. I've used these rigs for years. I think you must be mistaken. :)

  • u hooked the rope in wrong place smart one

  • Thanks for the video. I personally have never caught one on an artificial bait, but I might try this one. So far my biggest is a little over six feet but there are bigger ones out there. I have seen them.

  • i tried using this rope lure in a creek with algae all around with many gar in the middle the algae gets on the rope lure and sometimes turns it green or brown does this affect it? i didnt catch anything i fished around 11 a.m. and im wondering how fast or slow to reel it and what time of day is best thanks

  • @koolkid18212756 - I'm not sure if a discolored lure will work as well, I would imagine that it wouldn't. If you are able to make casts and retrieves easily, do it slowly. If you can 'spot cast' the the fish you see, you'll have a good chance at attracting one if you retrieve slowly (just fast enough to make the spinner spin.' I find that in my home lake around 1 pm is the best time. Send me a pic when you catch one. Good Luck! Doug

  • @dnejeff thanks for the advice ima going to go try to catch one wish me luck!

  • The rope looks like a Shad and works awsome we use a gaff and take pictures caught a 6ft alligator gar on this lure it's awsome

  • Cadillac. Yes. If you can see the gar, just cast a few feet in front of it and slowly retrieve. You will usually get a strike. Have some heavy gloves handy though.

  • do you just fish it like a regular spinner bait?

  • do you just fish it like a regular spinner bait?

  • Most people think gar would be a nasty tasting fish Including me...But it is a really good fish it isnt too strong at all...And another thing....You dont really even need the hook for the spinner the rope gets caught in the teeth..He is just using it to hold the rope

  • Great lure! I just tried it out today, and caught 7 gar in two hours. One was 3.5 feet long.

  • @CrunchySlippers That is fantastic.. Glad to hear that it worked for you.. Are you going to try the fish? I can give you some tips on cleaning if you decide to. Anything over about 3' has a pretty decent amount of fillet on them.

  • Shady.yes, you cut the rope, then use needlenose plyers to remove the rope from thier teeth. Unless of course we you intend to eat the fish. :) which I recommend highly. Thanks for the comment!

  • @dnejeff Have you ever caught any big aligator gar on this rig

  • @djm000444 Unfortunately Ky doesn't really have any. Fish and wildlife are working to restore the populations to the area, but that is going to take somoe serious time. I'm not sure that it would work with them since their teeth look much different than a long/short nose. It would be fun to try though. :)

  • how do you get it out of their mouth? do you have to cut the line?

  • how do you use these lure man u let it sit like you have bait on it and wait for bite or u walk the dog like spiner lure or how u use it man thanks im from texas we have tons of it in the trinity river man but i use mullet and have get no chances to caugth one man i let em run to take some line but no luck they always let the hook go

  • @artyls1 Thanks for the question. It is nearly impossible to 'Hook' a gar. The lure i make is for 'snagging' them by their teeth. Cast amongst them, give it a slow steady retrieve, and you should get one. A strong 'hookset' is not required as they are never actually hooked. Good Luck. Let me know if you catcch one! Doug

  • Thank you keep up the good work also you should show the ppl how to fix gar to eat it's good !! And we need to keep the numbers down God bless

  • @MrHickerynut7 I'm thinking about doing another video of how to clean one, but there are a few good ones online already. And I agree with you, for a 'trash' fish (which I don't agree with by the way) they are delicious. :)

I always wonder why some consider a top predator in the water a trash fish.. My guess is because they eat $7 bass lures for breakfast. :)

  • the reason the rope is used is not cause of the teeth only its cause the mouth is too bony for a hook to actually set in the mouth. either gotta snag or gut hook one if using a hook. or shoot it with a bow

  • would this work for english trout and pike both predatory fish

  • Thanks for the question.. I don't think that either of the fish you mentioned are 'toothy' enough. If you google the longnose gar you'll see their teeth and very needle like and they have a TON of them. The lure actually just tangles in the teeth so the fish are never truely hooked.

If you try and are successful, please let me know so I can let others know about it.

    Thanks Again! Doug

  • nice lure u thing it will work for australian fish!!!!!

  • :) Thanks for the comment.. I imagine they would work just fine for any needle toothed fish that would bite them. If you try it, let me know. Thanks again for the comment.

  • Hmmm, I was wondering, does the gar's teeth get caught up in the tangle of fiber from the rope? Because it appears that you have covered the hook altogether. I generally avoid gar, but in my area at this time of the year there is an abundance of 3-4 footers about. Nothing else has been biting, so maybe..........

  • Hi thanksfor the question. Yes the gar teeth snagin the rope fray and makes it very hard for them to get away. General they are caught if they bite. I believe once you catch a couple you will add them to your favorite fish list. Make sure you have some good LEATHER gloves before you catch one. They will get hung up in cotton or cloth gloves. Don't under estimate the teeth. In a 4' gar they are about 1/2" long. If you are interested, they are great to eat too. Lots of fillets in a 4' fish.

  • Thanks for the reply. I made a couple od the lures and i'm going to try them tommorow. Hopefully i can find the gar on the lake i am going to.

  • Great idea on how to use the rope for a lure. My grandfather always used to tell me about fishing for gar and I always wondered how he attached rope to a line. Never got a chance to ask him. Thanks

  • Nice to hear from you. I bet your grandfather loved catching those guys as much as I do. :)

  • You know I'm not sure what other fish bite these, but I fish exclusivly for the longnose gar. That is me at the beginning of the video holding one. :)

  • what kind of fish have you cought on it ? pike ? bass ? musky ? probly more pike and musky eh ?

  • If you add a hook to your rope lure then you would be able to catch ohter fish also. I made a video a couple years ago here on youtube.

  • Forgot to add that a rope lure is just an immitation of a minnow just like a jig or crankbait so any predatory fish will hit it.

  • Comment removed

  • i have tried so many different rigs and lures for gar and so far this is the only one i found that actually works and isnt a pain to make:)

  • great video mine worked perfect

  • Great. Glad you had some luck!

    :)

  • cool i made one 2
