this is a bad video if your trying to find a swing to model because it the home run derby. they dont use their regular swing during this. find swings from in game those will be better
@Highflyerone what we have at 0:04 is not really arm extension because his right arm is bent about 90. his left arm is as extended as it began in his load. the extension we need to take from this is his wrist extension. to get the best homerun contact he begins his wrist roll but makes contact with his right hand under the bat.
If u guys play baseball and if u make these perfect swings the coaches say ur doing everything wrong....... they video taped me and said i was doing it wrong for swinging like the pros......lol but oh well
Sadego GG hey dumbass. Try swinging with just your upper torso as fast as you can with no lower body, no load on your hips, nothing. Then try using your legs and dragging your hands through the zone. If youre good, which you probably arent, the ball will go further using your legs. They are the strongest muscles in your body if you dont know simple kinesiology
@LoveThatGirl21695 The point is you can't think about rotating your torso fully and having a rotational upper half properly without having your legs follow. Vice versa is not true. You can do whatever the fuck you want with your legs, but that doesn't mean your upper body will do shit. If you do the right things with your torso, your legs will be in the proper place. Not the other way around.
Wow, this is not one of Pujols better swings. Look at right before 0:03, the barrel is already below hand level, and he proceeds to drag it along the zone. After that, it's just all shoulders and hands for him, with little overall rotation.
However, this ought to show you how incredibly strong he is, assuming he hit this out. He didn't even use much lower body. This is not a good representation of Pujols' swing -- it's usually perfectly beautiful.
Thanks. I'll check out your vids. I agree that his core is doing the primary rotational work, the guy is built like a 300 year old oak tree , but I think he is getting some additional power from the lean back and leg plant into the ground that more up-right hitters don't get. But what do I know I'm no professional, however its interesting to think about. It would be interesting to see a fps graph of the left foot.
Nice analysis. I believe that left hip/core rotation triggers rotation though. The left leg responds to the left hip/core rotation.
If you want a high speed video of his swing please check out my other videos. I captured some nice video of Albert, Matt Holiday and Colby at a Rockies game in 2009.
His left leg is key in generating rotational power at the point of impact. He is using a backward push with his left leg to create a forward push against the ball on his right. Full extension of the left leg happens through the contact of the ball. I've seen videos on youtube where his back foot is off the ground at impact. The left leg is driving into the ground for sure.
The conscious mind can think of one thing at a time. Think of a book. A picture of a book comes to the screen of the mind. Think of a fish. A picture of a fish not enters the screen of the mind. While you hold the picture of the book, you cannot possibly hold the picture of the fish at the same time. The only way you could do so would be to merge both of them into a single picture.
So from my understanding, your premise is that a hitter should focus on his/her legs/feet
instead of the torso. If you can consciously think of one thing at a time, it wouldn't make sense to argue Pujols could possibly think of both. The torso is the largest part of the body. Thinking about the torso creates efficient full body movement. Mind is movement, body is the manifestation of that movement. Activity in the mind dictates activity of the body. Think about an invention really quick. When you first invent something, it starts with thinking.
Thoughts are generated by the mental faculty reason and are formed together as ideas by the mental faculty imagination. Therefore, when inventing something, its necessary to formulate an idea before you can build it. Everything is invented twice, first as an idea then as a physical thing. Van Gogh talked about how he dreamed his painting, then painted his dream.
Now lets go back to hitting. Hitting is an accumulation of thought based on the prior reasoning I explained.
I am going to take this a step further, and suggest hitting is an attitude. Attitude is the composite of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Hitting starts as a series of thoughts, formed together as an idea. When that idea is expressed (aka you swing) you have feelings within your body. These feelings are caused by what you think about your body doing. For instance, if you think of your left foot pushing back really hard, you will feel your left foot push you back hard.
So, thoughts create feelings. The feelings you have dictate your action. In the case of hitting, feelings dictate mechanics. When you think about your leg pushing you back you will feel your leg pushing you back. Consequently if you video yourself and look back at the video you will see your leg pushing you back. Going back to the definition of attitude (The composite of your thoughts, feelings, and actions) we can formulate a new premise:
I have already explained how thoughts create feelings, which consequently create actions. We can also conclude that thoughts create actions, since thoughts create feelings (which consequently create actions).
I hope I have now established that thinking is what creates human movement. I also hope you understand that you can consciously think of one thing at a time.
Moving on, I can bend, throw, kick, push, swing, and rotate my legs in any imaginable direction.
Regardless of how hard, which direction, or the manner in which I think about, and consequently, kick my leg...my hands will not fly through the hitting zone. Therefore, I can conclude that thinking about the legs does not generate much power into the hands for a hitter. So I think its silly you have so much discussion over how the legs are what generate power in a swing. When, in fact, proper thinking about the torso maximizes power output and variability of a swing.
@AraArsenJan He might, but this isn't an indication of it. It's nearly perfect, but for live pitching, I think Pujols and I agree that his bottom-hand lead will be much less compact than that full extension. Otherwise, the lower body is VERY good and the top-hand drive is a thing of beauty.

I swear him and Cabrera has the most perfect foundations to a swing!! I mean look at the form, the foundation, the balance, that's why he's good!!!
