Tatiana was my neighbor on the Upper West Side, meeting her for the first time by chance in Riverside Park with her little Schnauzer Shatzie, on the very eve of her Met debut in '74(?) She was kind, bubbly, and what a voice then! I'll never forget the Ariadne, and her Octavian was lovely, before all the Bellini hubbub. I saw her a week before she died, and thanked her for her great contribution to opera, and for enriching my life with her art. She was extraordinary. Placido is a true gent.
Thank you so much for posting this! Isn't this from a PBS broadcast recital featuring both Domingo and Troyanos? I saw it at the time, and thought it was one of the best opera recitals I ever heard!
This is stunningly beautiful. Troyanos and Domingo are incredibly matched and give a thoroughly musical and deeply heartfelt, committed performance- even in just a recital format. Fantastic. I can't say enough good things about it.
Watching this glorious pair, I was reminded of my favorite Birgit Nilsson quip. Asked (on the Met Opera Quiz, if I remember correctly)how she managed to sing love duets with an unappealing or unattractive tenor, she said, "I close my eyes and think of Placido Domingo."
Hard to believe this was the "second string" cast for Live from the Met ('82 I think?) We were so disappointed because Sherrill Milnes had to cancel (he returned the following year for a triumphant duet concert with PD) but Tatiana won our hearts that night. Seeing her in formal wear vs the usual trouser roles was a revelation. Never understood why the Met didn't release these videos. Thanks for sharing it.
Troyanos was the greatest Adalgisa of her generation (and one of the best of all time). She sang it with Scotto (Met), Caballe (La Scala), Deutokomen (San Fran) and stole the show each time. Troyanos is usually associated with German Roles or more dramatic parts, but she is great in bel canto (including Mozart's Sesto). I wish she had done more bel canto roles - Romeo (I Capuletti), Jane Seymour (Anna Bolena), etc. -but the Met never did much of that repertoire.
Thank you so much for posting. I haven't seen this since the original telecast. Both are in great form. Troyanos' Adalgisa is so creamy, luscious and feminine. Heaven.
you can find troyanos as adalgisa on pirate recordings or in studio recording with her as adalgisa and renata scotto as norma, conducted by james levine
Troyanos is the best.
& damn, Placido had it going on.

To mjmacmtenor
She did do Romeo. There's a live recording
with Sills from 1975(put out by VAI)Though I
have heard some wonderful Romeos, I have yet to hear one better than Troyanos. You will fall hopelessly in love with her. I did :)
