Yes we did :) You need the reaction to be quite slow as if it's too fast you'll boil the water. If you're trying to fill a balloon with hydrogen (which is what we were doing) then all you'll do is fill the balloon with steam - which isn't what you want.
whats the point of making hydrogen? what use is there to it? it is flamable ? yes? and so is petrol i dont get it. The only fun thing there is if if you did it in a plastic bottle and put a cap on it and threw it
Ummmm.....Yeah I think you failed chemistry! Try putting the aluminum foil into a ball and throw them in, than pour liquid or powdered Drano into the bottle, now you get Hydrogen and if you want you can place a balloon over the mouth piece to catch the Hydrogen. Hydrogen gas is very flammable so be safe!
I have done this experiment before lots of times. You should use a much higher concentration of sodium hydroxide - yours didn't even start to react properly!
How fast things go depends on the sodium hydroxide you are using. In the UK we can buy it neat (or at least something like 99%) so you don't need that much.
did they even make any hydrogen in the first place

To make it really loud you need to mix the hydrogen with oxygen. That sets off car alarms.

where do you get pure oxygen? will just air do?
jimoffy 3 years ago
pure oxygen at a medical place

man all theses people suck at this
the ballons i make when confined in a tube set off car alarms and deafen me for half an hour

Drano contains NaOH. Pure NaOH and perhaps some shred of Al which can easily be separated.

In the UK you can get it from Homebase. Just ask for Caustic Soda. It costs about £3.
