I have been working on the No. 2 Partita Giga (Bach) and my left hand is clamping so bad. This week it's the no. 8 Wohlfahrt for sound and realization that I don't need a "thumb" to play violin. I just now played the Allemande and before I finished my thumb was pressing. I need something like George Antheil, Charles Ives, Bartok, ... something where I don't have to play music that's pretty.
What's your take on the thumb issue? Have you seen it before?
I cannot get over the art on your walls. I am mesmerized. Thank you for all the great material. In the beginning of Carl Flesch's book on violin playing is a preamble written by Anne Sophie Mutter which says there is an ancient German proverb that goes something like: What little Johnny doesnt learn young little Johnny will never learn. Alas i will never learn to play the violin. Why did i bother trying?
I think I had read that son file' in Galamian's book Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching... oh yeah it was on page 103 of that book, now that you showed it how, it made me more easier to understand. So thanks a lot for posting this video!
Seriously, this has helped so much you have no idea. I had no Idea how much sounding point would be involved I'm so glad I watched this video!
I've actually practiced sounding point and I'm really glad that their is a piece that has it. I'm so glad I purchased this study book, It has everything a violinist needs for growth!
I tried playing this etude today but I kinda got a bit frustrated doing the dynamics because I didn't know about the in and out of the bridge technique!
Hi my name is Alexandru from windsor Canada, and I would like to thank you for your videos I find then very easy to follow and undertand. I am currently watching videos on how to hold the bow, but thats as far as I have got. I know I am going to have to get lesson but right now is not a good time for me. Can you please help me get started? I would like to know if I need to learn how to hold the bow first or just where would one begin?
HI professor, i just wanted to ask you for some advice:
I am playing a piece called Schindler's list ( i'm sure you know it:), on violin. Do you know what is the most important thing to focus on when playing that piece? I sort of know how to play it now, however it doesn't quite sound like i want it to. I am not sure whether to focus mostly on intonation, or bow techniques...
I only ever tried violin during music lessons in what's probably High School in the US. It sounded horridly screechy. I don't think anyone in my school made the violin sound decent...our orchestra was pretty bad. The only one guy we had - he was too good and left on a scholarship....jah, I continue to procrastinate...dihydrophosphate reductase...^_^
I have larger fingers and I'm generally having a hard time knowing how much room i have between notes. it's all learning by ear i suppose. should I try to figure this piece out by ear or should i try to find the sheet music? your instruction is perfect but I don't have access to any music or scales.
I am amazed at the emotion that you carry in that music, even while you talk. Beautiful! You are a master at the violin! You couldn't make it look any easier, if you tried... well, I bet you could.
I've never done that "move the bow towards the bridge, towards the finger board" thing and I've been playing for over 5 years. What exactly is your reasoning behind that?
Hey man, just a question...On music sheet, how is displayed the bow's bridge technique?I mean, how do i know certain notes are played with the bow closer or further?
Hi, the accents will require more bow speed than what you were just using (at the bridge) and that will create a scratchy tone if you stay at the bridge. Move away from the bridge for bow speed, towards the bridge for bow weight (with a slow bow). Try it out several ways and see what you hear. TE
I can't believe you are suggesting I break my bow for long measures! It was expensive, and that sounds very counter productive. lol Seriously, I'm learning a great deal from your videos. Thanks!
