What a terrible performance ... one is so drunk he can hardly keep his eyes open and the other is over the hill 27 years ago!! dont keep blaming Phil Collins he just got off a flight from europe to try and keep it together!!
Obviously, it ain't zeppelin without Bonham and yes, it is horrible. But anyone who thinks it sucks because if Phil Collins is wrong. Jimmy is out of his mind...I think he had the H on an IV drip that day and plant is so off pitch, it's ridiculous. Nobody plays like Bonzo and never will. Overall, AWFUL!
@mrtamberineman123 No, you're saying what only you were thinking because most people know he has bags of talent. Besides Page and Plant performed far worse than him in that performance.
@hartbrakers What was with Page ?, i saw an Interview after this show and Jimmy looks for me totaly drunk or full of drugs ? and in my opinion his guitar was totally out of Tune. sounded for me so .
@MrAlex0262 uhm my friend the where going treu a hard time that days begous the lost the best drumer of the world how would you look when you just would have your best friend;-)
@GreenDayRulz4Life100 Tony Thompson's drumming drowned out Phil's drumming. Listening to this performance on headphones and Phil comes in at 0:52. Tony Thompson was rehearsed in the event that Phil couldn't make it. Robert Plant invited Phil to play months before Live Aid happened (both Collins and Plant assert that statement) but it was the late Bill Graham and Bob Geldof who thought a Led Zeppelin reunion would be a better draw than a Page/Plant/Collins collaboration.
I don't think he comes in at the wrong time at all. You're talking about a drummer that was used to complicated time signatures with Genesis. You even hear him counting in at 0:47.
Its a shame they did not spend more time jamming out towards the end. Whole Lotta love was really the best example of Led Zeppelins ability to make up riffs and melodies on the fly, and sound good while doing it. Although the ending of the '85 performance, doesn't sound like any other between 68-80.
I'm assuming all the guitar players used the same Marshall cuz when you listen to black sabbath preform paranoid you can here that flanger pedal and it get annoying, there good pedals but only for certain areas
@SonOfYoungwood You are the only one that has anything good to say about Collins ......maybe the ignorance can be found when you look in the mirror next.
@gjrock70 Fuck off. Collins is an incredible drummer. Why did Robert Plant hire Phil for his first two solo albums, because of his DRUMMING on the classic Genesis albums from 1971-81 and also Brand X. Phil also drummed on Peter Gabriel's 1979 UK Tour as his band couldn't get working visas and Phil played with an anger in his drums which snowballed due to the divorce he went through. Next you will say David Gilmour ruined Pink Floyd when Roger Waters quit.
I love all the ignorant Zeppelin fans in here. You people should listen to some early Genesis. Until then, your license to talk about Collins is revoked.

@gjrock70 -- you are either ignorant or mentally challenged if you think Collins is a second-rate drummer. Listen to Brand X or Genesis from 1971-1976.
Wow. Phil Collins is the whole problem for this horrible performance? As Pete Townsend said in 1989, " The Gross disgusting object that was Led Zeppelin." WAY WAY WAY over rated as a band.
............Great band, great song writers, live at Earls court is one of the best live concerts EVER but Page is not the best live guitarist. In the studio he is an absolute legend. He was very weak at Live Aid though. Phil always said that the band blamed him for there bad performance, but as Phil Collins rightly says, They where the ones not on form.
@tomorocko Disagree on alot of levels but having seen Page live with the Firm he absolutely needed to be in the studio and not on stage. You can hide alot of shortcomings in the studio which he absolutely did. Song writing was mediocre. I always thought the Stones were horrible live in anything Ive seen but really like their albums. Zeppelin misses it on all fronts.. The Who nails it all on all levels as does U2 and a few others.
meh. I suppose it's all opinion at the end of the day but Led Zeppelins song writing was far from mediocre. But it is all opinions and thank you for your input :)
@PowerfulPunch ya i guess thats why the who sold their 100 million albums while zeppelin sold their 300 million so why dont u take that kind of bullshit and shove it back up your ass
@gingerbasser1975 Zeppelin wasnt a good band. As Pete said in 1989 " The Gross disgusting object that was Led Zeppelin" He gave them their name BTW so shove THAT up your ass.
@dhorner64 The drumming ain't the problem buddy. Jimmy Paige is out of his mind here - can barely play and Robert Plant sounds like he's 60. Listen to 1:14 with Paige and Plant "trying" to sing the chorus. drunk Awful. The drumming is actually the best part. Phil Collins was solid and probably the only guy straight on the stage.
Repost. I fucked up the last few. This is my perception. Not sure if this is actually what happened. Seems like it too me. During the first and second chorus, Robert tricks Jimmy into singing it by himself. He mouths the lyrics but let's Jimmy's voice do ALL the work! By the third chorus Jimmy is nowhere near Robert. Jimmy get's near the other mic, then steps back, and looks at Robert with an expression that says,"You sing it!" Then Jimmy hardly, if at all, sings into his mic. I find it funny!
It's all acoustics guys....Collins took a shot at Page after the show but if you let go of the out of tune monitors you can tell that Page played better here than he did on the 77 or 80 tours...fuck Phil Collins for talking shit he had no business being on that stage
Is it me or does Jimmy look wasted? I heard that Led Zep blamed Phil for a terrible performance. Erm... Robert Plant sings a lot better than this usually, but this is off key! Nothing to do with his drumming at all.
Its well known this wasnt the best performance for many reasons. I think two drummers on stage just didn't work well. Tony Thompson shoulld have been the only one up there. After all they did choose him to reunite in '86 for a full blown tour. Some of you don't know that do you?
I don't really think they sound that bad...It's just not 70's Led Zeppelin. The solo was good on Jimmy's part, it was the drummers faults for not coming back in at the correct time. Not a terrible performance if you ask me.
slash is a blatent rip off of jimmy page he ripped off his licks his style everything and hes not half as good as page guns n roses did good songs but look at slash now without axl duff and izzy he is nothing led zepp will always be the best rock band in the world ever
@Matthew9444 noooo..., :) it's only a "must" in the '80 conception of some guitar heroes like Van Halen, Steve Vai and so on.... but the fact is that Page sounds in the '70 was a kick in the ass, while the sound in this vid is soooo old and glam!!!! Well, I run to listen to Led Zeppelin II, I must educate my ears..... :))))
in phil collins defense, i dont think theres a live version of this song on the internet wih john bonham playing the drums the same way twice on this song
Good on Jonesy. He was the only one to keep rhythm, and keep up with Jimmy. I guess even after years of not playing together still they knew each other well enough to know what to do. Poor Bonzo yes, but poor Phil, he just could not keep up. He was exhausted. But great effort. and yeah, was jimmy drunk or high???

if any one thinks phil is a bad drummer listen to any genesis album from 1970 to 77 and you may want to change your mind. he was a jazzy, prog and creative drummer who probably could not be challenged by any including the great bonham. but i do agree, he should of sit this one out, not knowing the songs very well. still he only really blew that one break....i think page's performance was far worse, but for the nostalgia of it all, it rocks and love every minute of it
@jimmygt4 late reply, I know ;-) But these 2 songs have such particular drumtracks that even I , being no drummer, know them almost by head. I don't think Phil Collins does a bad job here. I enjoyed it in 1985 and I enjoy it now in 2011.
@jimmygt4 Jimmy was actually playing pretty decent. The problem was his guitar was way out of tune. That's why he sounds off. If you notice, he tried tuning it twice, before the first two songs, but couldn't quite get it right.
Phil looked tired, he had a concert in London and then fly to Philadelphia were he played with Eric Clapton, then some of his solo songs, then the Led Zep reunion...whats next ? a solo performance of "We are the world" ....all by himself ?; Tony Thompson was fresh at that moment, besides he had a very different style of drumming. still, this is what could happen when you improvise and try to call all the attention. Even so, Phil was one of the best drummers in the world. Regards from Mexico.
Does anyone notice that every time they show Phil he is staring at Tony Thompson trying to catch up to him. I like Phil in certain songs that he sings but he was only an average drummer at best.. He is not even playing the song like Bonzo did. He never did basic beats like this, that is what made Bonzo so great.
Phil Collins is probably one of the best rock/jazz drummers in history. It's just that when you throw a charity gig together in a few weeks, there isn't much time for practise. That said, he DOES have his snare drum at a silly angle.
@austinallegro31 I've never liked The Simpsons but I love a line Bart once used when 2 broken arms disqualified him from playing drums in the school band. As he lamented and cried he said, "I used to be a great drummer but now I can't do ANYTHING. I'm just like Phil Collins!!!"
@austinallegro31 That being said, Collins outright REFUSED to practice with the band beforehand, claiming to know every Zeppelin song inside and out. Clearly this wasn't the case. Page was clearly hammered here yet his guitar playing was perfection.
They should have made some minor overdubs in the stu-stu-studio and then released it to raise money for Africa's inability to build grocery stores...yeah.
they did some "untouchable" performance, and did some bad performance. in 1968-1972 (maybe until 1973) they were the BEST. no one can "touch" them. but from 1975-1980 they did some bad performance and some good performance. but this performance is terrible. i know its hard to reach their top performance. but, that's the life of the legend.
Phil Collins was Peter Gabriel's bitch in Genesis. He disappeared up his own arse in the 80s. Jimmy and Robert were so out of it that they lost the run of themselves letting the Collins berk drum on this song. No wonder they got a court order banning the song from being sold on video anywhere
I agree about Phil Collins...even Jimmy has said Phil used this to boost his own career...what a moron...They could have had anyone else do drums better than that goof.
you know, i realized something for the first time. plant lost weight compared with the late 70's. i think it affected his voice. he looked sort of skinny/slim here, later he gained his weight back and his voice. in opera, one is always careful with weight loss and the voice.
Actually, Tony did indeed join LZ in late 1985/early 1986. He apparently did 8 new tracks with LZ at Bron-Yr-Aur studios with them but Jimmy decided to shelve the project after Tony was involved in a car wreck later that year. Jimmy still has those master tapes.
I had just graduated high school..... Led Zeppelin.... one of my all time fave bands! Phil Collins.... Fave musician / Performer. Don't know that Phil is theeee "BEST" drummer "ever", but C'mon. the guy kicks ass! John Bonham was irreplaceable. That's for sure! His drumming was (and is) right in the pocket!! I think Plant sounded the worst out of all of them....... but one thing's for sure....I was in 7th Heaven when this aired in '85. Great memories!!
tony thompson was one of the best 10 drummers of all time. he was formally invited to join led zeppelin right after live aid in 1985 but reluctantly declined because he had to take care of his dying father.
Yeah you see Phil scratch his nose? He's looking at Thompson and letting him play that drum part. Kind of like "I can see you got this one, you take it mate". Do you honestly believe Collins could not play that? If you do you're out of your head.
JFK stadium, Philly......what a kick ass venue. saw many great band there, in fact i saw the last event, dylan and dead 1987 before they tore it down. but on this day i was home watching on tv as zeppelin played less than 30 minutes from my house....what was i thinking?
they were not happy with their performance that's why they kept it off the live aid dvd. there was another drummer (tony thompson) playing too besides phil collins. i guess they thought they needed 2 drummers to replace bonzo! it was the first time time the remaining members of led zep played after bonham died so i think it was a big deal at the time. i remember watching this live on mtv and lovin' it! i'll take zeppelin on a bad day any day!
makes me sad to see such comments about phil collins he is a very very good drummer thats a fact . As you can see and hear mr plant and mr page are well below par in fact they are the ones Bonzo would be cussing all very sad
Robert sounds terrible! Never mind about the drumming! And of course Jimmy needs effects! You don't throw Led Zep on stage with no rehearsal and no monitors and expect to get the full effect! But them blaming Phil for their poor performance is unprofessional!
@LindsayWesker Effects wouldn't have hid the fact that Jimmy was playing like shit at Live Aid and that Plant was equally as bad.JPL was on the money,Collins did what he could (and Im no fan, believe me) but how could you play with that muck.
Im a Who fan and I thouh their performance was below par at the time - this makes The Who more forgivable!!
@buzzard905... They were a thousand times worse at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary show 3 years later.
Phil Collins didn't rehearse with the rest of the band so he really had no good reason sitting in. Tony Thompson did a great job, though he was not as big a name as Collins.
What a terrible performance ... one is so drunk he can hardly keep his eyes open and the other is over the hill 27 years ago!! dont keep blaming Phil Collins he just got off a flight from europe to try and keep it together!!

gingerbasser1975 4 months ago
@gingerbasser1975 Zeppelin wasnt a good band. As Pete said in 1989 " The Gross disgusting object that was Led Zeppelin" He gave them their name BTW so shove THAT up your ass.
PowerfulPunch 4 months ago
they should have only had one drummer.... Phil's a damn fine drummer, not sure who the other cat is... but he really screwed this up
dhorner64 5 months ago
@dhorner64 The drumming ain't the problem buddy. Jimmy Paige is out of his mind here - can barely play and Robert Plant sounds like he's 60. Listen to 1:14 with Paige and Plant "trying" to sing the chorus. drunk Awful. The drumming is actually the best part. Phil Collins was solid and probably the only guy straight on the stage.

This performance got panned - but I'm still banging my head to this one!
jackwilshiresfakeid 5 months ago

Adennos 6 months ago
Is it me or does Jimmy look wasted? I heard that Led Zep blamed Phil for a terrible performance. Erm... Robert Plant sings a lot better than this usually, but this is off key! Nothing to do with his drumming at all.
Blackheathguy 6 months ago
Its well known this wasnt the best performance for many reasons. I think two drummers on stage just didn't work well. Tony Thompson shoulld have been the only one up there. After all they did choose him to reunite in '86 for a full blown tour. Some of you don't know that do you?

I don't really think they sound that bad...It's just not 70's Led Zeppelin. The solo was good on Jimmy's part, it was the drummers faults for not coming back in at the correct time. Not a terrible performance if you ask me.

Page's playing on this is atrocious. He's a sloppy player at the best of times but this would make a hilarious "Sreds" video as it is !

Good on Jonesy. He was the only one to keep rhythm, and keep up with Jimmy. I guess even after years of not playing together still they knew each other well enough to know what to do. Poor Bonzo yes, but poor Phil, he just could not keep up. He was exhausted. But great effort. and yeah, was jimmy drunk or high???

if any one thinks phil is a bad drummer listen to any genesis album from 1970 to 77 and you may want to change your mind. he was a jazzy, prog and creative drummer who probably could not be challenged by any including the great bonham. but i do agree, he should of sit this one out, not knowing the songs very well. still he only really blew that one break....i think page's performance was far worse, but for the nostalgia of it all, it rocks and love every minute of it
jimmygt4 11 months ago 12
@jimmygt4 Wow. Seriously someone thinks that Phil Collins is not a great drummer. Is this possible, who is the fool?
avalanche344 6 months ago
@jimmygt4 late reply, I know ;-) But these 2 songs have such particular drumtracks that even I , being no drummer, know them almost by head. I don't think Phil Collins does a bad job here. I enjoyed it in 1985 and I enjoy it now in 2011.
DirkjeA 5 months ago
@jimmygt4 Jimmy was actually playing pretty decent. The problem was his guitar was way out of tune. That's why he sounds off. If you notice, he tried tuning it twice, before the first two songs, but couldn't quite get it right.
LedWilde 5 months ago
Phil looked tired, he had a concert in London and then fly to Philadelphia were he played with Eric Clapton, then some of his solo songs, then the Led Zep reunion...whats next ? a solo performance of "We are the world" ....all by himself ?; Tony Thompson was fresh at that moment, besides he had a very different style of drumming. still, this is what could happen when you improvise and try to call all the attention. Even so, Phil was one of the best drummers in the world. Regards from Mexico.
MrFerprog 11 months ago 2
Does anyone notice that every time they show Phil he is staring at Tony Thompson trying to catch up to him. I like Phil in certain songs that he sings but he was only an average drummer at best.. He is not even playing the song like Bonzo did. He never did basic beats like this, that is what made Bonzo so great.
dchilberti 11 months ago
this is painfully bad
taypax 11 months ago
Phil Collins is probably one of the best rock/jazz drummers in history. It's just that when you throw a charity gig together in a few weeks, there isn't much time for practise. That said, he DOES have his snare drum at a silly angle.
austinallegro31 1 year ago 21
@austinallegro31 Actually he didn't even practice for this!
Berserkedy 6 months ago
@austinallegro31 so did Buddy Rich. Just because you can't handle the angle, doesn't mean they can't.
MACOSXSL 6 months ago
@austinallegro31 I've never liked The Simpsons but I love a line Bart once used when 2 broken arms disqualified him from playing drums in the school band. As he lamented and cried he said, "I used to be a great drummer but now I can't do ANYTHING. I'm just like Phil Collins!!!"
xtrm1 5 months ago
@austinallegro31 That being said, Collins outright REFUSED to practice with the band beforehand, claiming to know every Zeppelin song inside and out. Clearly this wasn't the case. Page was clearly hammered here yet his guitar playing was perfection.

they did some "untouchable" performance, and did some bad performance. in 1968-1972 (maybe until 1973) they were the BEST. no one can "touch" them. but from 1975-1980 they did some bad performance and some good performance. but this performance is terrible. i know its hard to reach their top performance. but, that's the life of the legend.

Phil Collins was Peter Gabriel's bitch in Genesis. He disappeared up his own arse in the 80s. Jimmy and Robert were so out of it that they lost the run of themselves letting the Collins berk drum on this song. No wonder they got a court order banning the song from being sold on video anywhere
davebest2001 1 year ago

you know, i realized something for the first time. plant lost weight compared with the late 70's. i think it affected his voice. he looked sort of skinny/slim here, later he gained his weight back and his voice. in opera, one is always careful with weight loss and the voice.
babystinky 1 year ago
you can clearly see Collins didn't know the song...
jumpy27 1 year ago 4

Great memories!!

tony thompson was one of the best 10 drummers of all time. he was formally invited to join led zeppelin right after live aid in 1985 but reluctantly declined because he had to take care of his dying father.
rockytewky 1 year ago
Yeah you see Phil scratch his nose? He's looking at Thompson and letting him play that drum part. Kind of like "I can see you got this one, you take it mate". Do you honestly believe Collins could not play that? If you do you're out of your head.

JFK stadium, Philly......what a kick ass venue. saw many great band there, in fact i saw the last event, dylan and dead 1987 before they tore it down. but on this day i was home watching on tv as zeppelin played less than 30 minutes from my house....what was i thinking?
JubeProductions 1 year ago
it was the mid 80's so they were probably coked out!
desmundhume 1 year ago
they were not happy with their performance that's why they kept it off the live aid dvd. there was another drummer (tony thompson) playing too besides phil collins. i guess they thought they needed 2 drummers to replace bonzo! it was the first time time the remaining members of led zep played after bonham died so i think it was a big deal at the time. i remember watching this live on mtv and lovin' it! i'll take zeppelin on a bad day any day!
desmundhume 1 year ago

Robert sounds terrible! Never mind about the drumming! And of course Jimmy needs effects! You don't throw Led Zep on stage with no rehearsal and no monitors and expect to get the full effect! But them blaming Phil for their poor performance is unprofessional!
LindsayWesker 1 year ago 4
@LindsayWesker Effects wouldn't have hid the fact that Jimmy was playing like shit at Live Aid and that Plant was equally as bad.JPL was on the money,Collins did what he could (and Im no fan, believe me) but how could you play with that muck.
Im a Who fan and I thouh their performance was below par at the time - this makes The Who more forgivable!!
buzzard905 1 year ago
@buzzard905... They were a thousand times worse at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary show 3 years later.
Phil Collins didn't rehearse with the rest of the band so he really had no good reason sitting in. Tony Thompson did a great job, though he was not as big a name as Collins.
