He let me play maple leaf rag yesterday. Then he proceeded to play it backwards. Really nice guy too.

i love the mainstreet piano players. sometimes they even let people from the audience play. i always wondered...do you audition for this job as a mainstreet pianist like you would audition to be a character? Or are these roles only given to especially honored pianists? Is it a senior position?

this guy is great :D He has these little stickers that he gives to you when you play (yes he will let you play most of the time :D)

he's not there anymore. he retired in 2006. but rumor has it that he still goes up there every now and then to play.

Most pianist who play like this, know the melody and chord structure of piece. Then from there they improve on the it by adding octives, intervals, and full chords instead of the simple melodies that most printed sheet music gives you.

If your interestd in practising playing like this, go out and buy a style of music book called a "fake book" which contains only melodies and chord structers of a piece. Then have fun improvising on it =)

there is sheet music. but a lot of the music played here is improved. ie the runs between measures.

He would learn the original song, then make it into ragtime style so he changes rhythms, adds runs and harmonies etc.
