what I am thinking right now is If I would like to live if anything like this happens.Today is likely the same but If the world turns completely to be like this ?
@TheCharlaux Today is nothing like this, not even in North Korea. No nation has ever been so horrifying as Oceania, not even close (okay, N-Korea is pretty close)
and for all of you speaking about this book, it's anti-totalitarian and the author was having a hell of a depression at the time of writing, plus being a trotskyist, thus building a worst case scenario: people seizing power, generation of a new elite, information control, etc.
The Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn was the real 1984 in Russia. The time of its abuses were happing around the same time that as O'Well's novel came out in 1949. I urge anybody to read it
@Professor6871 This book is typical anti-communist and anti-soviet propaganda! I read it. And I can say, that every data is tampered and every chapter is full of lies. In 1989 Gorbachev opened secret Soviet archives on gulag and prison system in USSR. And what? The real numbers of imprisoned and deceased people under Stalin's government were about 10 times smaller than in Solzhenitsyn's book. Don't trust this man!
@zenjiyamadanihonbanz it is easy to see it as anti communist/anti soviet. But Oceania is neither communist, or socialist or even soviet. Even though it was probably similar to stalinism in its early days. The message of Marx has long been lost.
I am not talking about 1984, but about The Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn. I was replying to the one of the earlier Professor6871's post. By the way, 1984 is one of my favorite novels.
Socialism, Communism and Fascism (although different in many aspects) are all based on total control of their people via the armed forces.
Capitalism and Democratic Socialism, those two political systems are based on controlling their people via the economic system.
I have rejected all five. I don't know what the right political system is, but I know that ALL these have failed, and that we are still in conflict and misery.
@NPBaudelaire Thats not true, what you call "communism" isnt communism, maybe stalinism. Communism never existed and will never exit, because its an utopy, like the Anarcho-capitalism. But yeah, the other things you said are true, maybe the Demo-socialism is the less evil.
@Professor6871 Anarchy is not just crazy violence. It is the governance of the Individual, not a community. If everyone governed themselves to a perfect extent, and defended themselves with just cause, only then will Anarchy be a reasonable system.
@rifleman1002 Is that a dictionary definition or is it your own one you just made up? How about answering the my original question I made to you, if that isn't hard for you to do? Instead all this grap about governance of the individual... so if I burn down a shop I'm protecting myself bollocks to that with knobs on.
@AGTLI Soviet socialism? I think you mean Soviet Communism. That's why socialists can argue with them. I hate both schools of thought because they amount to the same thing - total control of their people.
Just like the soviets could hate the nazis, socialists can hate communists and vice versa.
Yea. They were ruled by the Communist Party though. Most of it's satelite parties called themselves Communist, as well.
I guess they didn't know themselves what they actually were, since they were only grasping for power. In fact, most of the time was spent on calling themselves "Anti-Fascist". Even their holidays were labelled as such. Probably sold itself better than "Communist" or "Socialist". After all, power was the only thing the party was interested in. Not a political idea.
without doubt the best film of the eighties, it still amazes me to watch it nearly thirty years after its release. and george orwell wasn't a million miles off the truth, we are living in a big brother society were our every movement is watched and scrutinised.
I watched this film back in 1989 just after having read the novel for the first time. I was 18 and the conclusion of the film with this music near moved me to tears, especially reading in the credits that it was filmed at the very same time and in the same place (Spring 1984, London) that George Orwell envisaged when he wrote it. How the world could have turned out so differently...
my beliefs are the opossite of this regime and yet i always relate this song to winston´s struggle and eventual fall. Its such a personal paradox that i relate this anthem of slavery to winston short lived freedom and love with julia.
@marto282 it is only the end of the anthem that the lyrics become genuinely ominous. Also, you have hit upon the irony of the anthem. Oceania in no way resembles the language used, and yet it does if you remember that the party itself is being described, rather than the masses.

Ironically, George Orwell was a socialist but wrote 1984 has a warning to not turn to the socialism in Germany during the 30s and 40s or else the world would turn out like it did in the book.
@FWYGINOND Doubtful... Eastern Germany WAS socialist until the wall fell, under a USSR puppet government. Their socialism only pushed the US to contain communism (shown by NATO and the Marshall Plan) further. It actually helped the push for democracy.
@Euitha I was talking about "fascism" which means "national socialism", or nationalist socialism. See, at the time (1930-40s) most of the European socialists were internationalists, as in they wanted a single global government. National Socialism was different because it implimented socialism through nationalism and in the name of nationalism. The socialist policies were executed only because of Hitler and Mussolini's nationalism. Also, George Orwell was English, thus ENGlish SOCialism.
@Euitha As for Orwell, he most certainly was a socialist. @FWYGINOND Quite right. If I recall correctly, actually, Orwell's book Animal Farm was banned from publishing because it hindered the British governments cause of making the Soviet's seem to be the 'good guys'
the biggest crime ever is collectivisim. Only rational way is to respect a single human being. When you make collectiveness more important than individual, that straight way to totalitarianism.
The problem is in our times people often understand "freedom" as something as we see in 1984. This would not function properly as a national anthem. The sadness and grief evident in the melody would be inappropriate for a military melody. It still is, however, one of the best songs I have heard and fits perfectly with Oceania.

@Fullmetalpizza No. I guess maybe I should, was just curious. I am actually off to buy the book now soon, will that help me understand as well or is it movie specific?
@thomasmoonman Imagine totaly hating hitler, being put through life and death without dying or living, then coming out and loving him and everything about him.
@thomasmoonman watch the entire movie or read the book before making such a comment. It's not the song btw, but the face they see and the meaning behind him - BB
@thomasmoonman The anthem is designed to arouse emotion, galvanize the masses and move people. If it makes people cry it's because it's doing exactly what it's intended to do.
I listen to the first 40 odd seconds of this now and begin to shed tears myself. They got into me even in our society, and have broken my rebelious addictions.
@TheNaomiengland In a case the society being like the USSR then like Stalin he probably was real, but in this case i believe he is an image created by the inner party. Big Brother could also exist in the inner party, but his real face is not those of the posters.
The truth is both communism and capitalism have good points but both are fundamentally flawed economic systems. I do think that capitalism has more benefits to the people of a state than communism.
I look forward to the day when an economics professor comes up with credible alternatives to communism and capitalism!
The kind of totalitarianism depicted in 1984 never existed, either in the worst days of Stalinism or Nazi Germany, or indeed in any dictatorships in history.
That's because no one country can survive without access to the outside world, and external force influences and changes countries.
1984 was different because all the three states controlled the whole world, and politically they were all exactly the same, so there were no external forces for freedom.
@JakeFuyou Wrong. Although not exactly how it is shown in 1984, Hitlers Germany was very similar. There was him then his inner circle (inner party), then all the officers (outer party), the proles were the working class, then of course his soldiers. HItler amassed this type of power, and to doubt it is ignorant. Look at how the people live in N Korea. Cell phones are illegal, the people are damn near starving, the government is an all powerful entity, and the citizens have no contact.
@JSpencerFan23 Nazi Germany is nothing close to Oceania. While the leaders of Oceania (and N. Korea) are efficient in holding onto their power, Hitler was a fucking nitwit who had no concept of miltary tactics, economics, of social studies. Along with this, he helped to cripple Germany's economy in the long run by persecuting Jews who, in all honesty, were the ones who had the most skill and experience in running economics well, along with the fact that persecution of minorities doesnt
Sir, NK isn't even communist. It's got it's own ideology which is loosely based on communism. Karl Marx would be turning in his grave if he thought that was his legacy!

monolithic entity that is wholly against Western civilization. This sounds a bit like The Brotherhood to me, but hey.
2. Constant surveillance. In alot of Western nations today surveillance through camera's, phone taps, and so on have become the norm and are accepted as "security measures".
Again, things are NOT as bad as in 1984. However, the way things are heading, they may become this bad. This is something that we all must make a stand against.
@mrtoontown Agreed. Although things are not as bad as they are in 1984, we are well on the way. The government slowly chips away at our freedoms until one day we are living like these poor souls did. And Im sure all the way most of the people that were worried were branded "right wing nut jobs" etc... Im sure we will get to this point one day, but Il be damned if this happens to my country and I at least didn't put up a fight!!
@thatamazinggeek The thing is that we here in Western countries are in constant fear that this book is being used as an instruction manual. Yes yes I know things aren't REMOTELY as bad as in the book, but so many things seem to match up witht he story it makes you wonder.
Some examples...
1. An eternal enemy- The varied terrorist organizations in the middle east are shown as a sneaky, vile, united, and ever-present enemy. They are blamed for many horrible deeds, and are painted as a
@allwittynamestaken Your views shouldn't only be strengthened in Capitalism. Hell, even Nazi Germany had a capitalist economy (kinda). The point of the book is more about freedom of thought and beliefs, not just freedom of spending (Which IS important not saying it isn't)
My only problem with this anthem is that it doesn't end on an high note like most of the "totalitarian" national hymns, it just trails off. That said, I think that the trailing off adds to the British feel of the piece for some reason.
@TheBonsaiNinja - it isn't "wrong." It is because the notes and arrangement were put together to touch a person at their deepest so it makes sense that the song is "likeable." I find it very sad, the song, and when I hear it, my face involuntarily goes into a frown. It is a highly emotional song.

@kaes2000 The War in Iraq is good, it was always good. We just needed Obama to lie about saying he would end it, then perpetuate and augment it. I should have said "Lorrrrrrrrdddddddd Emanuellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll" instead, ha.
"But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself."
I think the above, followed by the epic four words that concluded the book, are the most EPIC words ever written on paper.

@Fullmetalpizza No. I guess maybe I should, was just curious. I am actually off to buy the book now soon, will that help me understand as well or is it movie specific?

@thomasmoonman watch the entire movie or read the book before making such a comment. It's not the song btw, but the face they see and the meaning behind him - BB

Yes, if you haven't read the book, you definitely ARE missing something - I can't recommend it strongly enough
Byron10301 9 months ago
@thomasmoonman The anthem is designed to arouse emotion, galvanize the masses and move people. If it makes people cry it's because it's doing exactly what it's intended to do.

WAs big brother real or not?
TheNaomiengland 1 year ago
@TheNaomiengland In a case the society being like the USSR then like Stalin he probably was real, but in this case i believe he is an image created by the inner party. Big Brother could also exist in the inner party, but his real face is not those of the posters.
Doctor699 1 year ago 2
The truth is both communism and capitalism have good points but both are fundamentally flawed economic systems. I do think that capitalism has more benefits to the people of a state than communism.
I look forward to the day when an economics professor comes up with credible alternatives to communism and capitalism!

I've just watched 1984. The film wasn't great but this oceania anthem is really good!
DerKaiserWilhelm 1 year ago
The kind of totalitarianism depicted in 1984 never existed, either in the worst days of Stalinism or Nazi Germany, or indeed in any dictatorships in history.
That's because no one country can survive without access to the outside world, and external force influences and changes countries.
1984 was different because all the three states controlled the whole world, and politically they were all exactly the same, so there were no external forces for freedom.
JakeFuyou 1 year ago
@JakeFuyou Wrong. Although not exactly how it is shown in 1984, Hitlers Germany was very similar. There was him then his inner circle (inner party), then all the officers (outer party), the proles were the working class, then of course his soldiers. HItler amassed this type of power, and to doubt it is ignorant. Look at how the people live in N Korea. Cell phones are illegal, the people are damn near starving, the government is an all powerful entity, and the citizens have no contact.
JSpencerFan23 1 year ago

NK are oppressors, which is what marx was against. Communism is about equality.......not oppression.

monolithic entity that is wholly against Western civilization.
This is something that we all must make a stand against.
mrtoontown 1 year ago 2
@mrtoontown Agreed. Although things are not as bad as they are in 1984, we are well on the way. The government slowly chips away at our freedoms until one day we are living like these poor souls did. And Im sure all the way most of the people that were worried were branded "right wing nut jobs" etc... Im sure we will get to this point one day, but Il be damned if this happens to my country and I at least didn't put up a fight!!
JSpencerFan23 1 year ago
@thatamazinggeek The thing is that we here in Western countries are in constant fear that this book is being used as an instruction manual. Yes yes I know things aren't REMOTELY as bad as in the book, but so many things seem to match up witht he story it makes you wonder.
Some examples...
1. An eternal enemy- The varied terrorist organizations in the middle east are shown as a sneaky, vile, united, and ever-present enemy. They are blamed for many horrible deeds, and are painted as a

"capitalism is the worst system in the world, except all others"- Adam Smith
allwittynamestaken 1 year ago
@allwittynamestaken Your views shouldn't only be strengthened in Capitalism. Hell, even Nazi Germany had a capitalist economy (kinda). The point of the book is more about freedom of thought and beliefs, not just freedom of spending (Which IS important not saying it isn't)
mrtoontown 1 year ago 3
My only problem with this anthem is that it doesn't end on an high note like most of the "totalitarian" national hymns, it just trails off. That said, I think that the trailing off adds to the British feel of the piece for some reason.

@TheBonsaiNinja - it isn't "wrong." It is because the notes and arrangement were put together to touch a person at their deepest so it makes sense that the song is "likeable." I find it very sad, the song, and when I hear it, my face involuntarily goes into a frown. It is a highly emotional song.
