Does the open hand blocking come from Wing-Chun or something else like that? I've been taught in Taijutsu to keep a fist slightly rolled inwards when blocking, it tends to stabalise the arm more when taking impact and keeps fingers safe from impact or the possibility of being grabbed. Give it a try both ways anyway.
