Being a landlord is a BUSINESS. if you are not prepared to run a business, you should not attempt to run a business. It is the LAW the the rental be habitable. Holes in the roof, birds flying around, and no heat make for poor business practice. "Planning" is not raising rent on current tenants. lol Wow - FOREVER ago when I went to USI I rented from this jackass, he refused to fix my problems, too. He entered my apartment when I wasn't home and took my belongings to a storage unit. I had to have the Warrick Sheriff's Office threaten to arrest him for burglary before he would return my things! We all went to the storage unit and this moron has "planted" a blow-up doll with my stuff. He is such a joke! This video really brought back memories, thanks!

But what I don't understand is, WHY did you move into such a terrible place? I'm sure all of these things didn't fall apart after you moved in. Did you even look at the house before you rented there? Did you think that any landlord would rebuild an entire place after you moved in?
Bill Umbach should not be allowed to rent these places, but this is your own fault for moving into this trash pile.
He was a really responsible guy until we signed the lease. I only rented the first floor, so I didn't know about the mold in the basement until it started affecting me. Other problems only became apparent after people moved in above us. He also mentioned he would fix things in the summer when we weren't there to be in his way. He obviously lied about that.
I admit it wasn't the smartest choice i ever made to move in there, but deception can go a long way sometimes.
I can understand that. I was thinking that I wouldn't move into a place until after everything was fixed. After thinking about it, I realized I did the same thing in Newburgh two years ago. The problems were minor but they never got repaired, except for the ones I repaired myself. Couldn't open the windows much (one had no screen, another had big holes -odd size, needed custom made). Replaced Thermostat myself. A few other problems that I supposed I adapted to, but I'm gone now...
@tlm551 i have to agree with this guy. no way in hell the house could've fallen apart that much that fast. you had to have seen and/or noticed these things before you vacated the property. i'm not condoning what the landlord is saying OR doing to you, but i think this could've been resolved a lot faster had you looked elsewhere to live.

according to the lease, who's resp. for repairs, also: amt. of rent due every month for how long(12 mnth lease-when does it expire?)...a lease is written in stone practically..what it says goes!
Most states have adopted the uniform landlord tenant reform act(ultra) in their state statutes. The ultra prohibits landlords from retaliating (like raising the rent) when a tenant makes a complaint about the property. If a landlord retaliates (and yours did on camera :)), the ultra requires the landlord to pay your lawyer fees, if you prove retaliation in court. Check with a lawyer, or read your state statute.
If the contract states the landlord is responsible for repairs then take this loser to small claims court for some of your rent back. Small claims court is cheap. This landlord is a real jerk. I live in Evansville and I won't be renting from Bill Umbach nor doing any business with this lazy jerk. If you treat people you depend on like trash then don't expect to prosper in business.

Good job! This guy is a slumlord. Just because others are content with the way things are done doesn't make this legal. What are you doing legally? Anything? You really need to.
At this point there isn't a lot of legal action I can take. I am a college student so I dont have the money to hire a lawyer. I sent him a notice of vacancy and moved out after calling a building inspector. The inspector said the house was uninhabitable and repairs must be made before he can rent it. If repairs aren't made by Feb 1st he may end up in superior court.
Hopefully his daughter will inherit it. I remember her coming with her dad and she was a very creative person. I gurantee she will keep the house for personal use. I hope these clowns didn't destroy the lovely features of the home such as the fireplace and built-ins in the living room. I am sure Bill has had to put with a lot over the years with irresponsible kids renting, as well.
These lovely features are still there. the lack of repairs to essentials of the home far outweigh these features however. If you are such close friends with Bill, encourage him to make the needed repairs or help him instead of trying to blame previous tenants. I offered to help on many different occasions but he refused it because it would still cost him a little money.
I agreed to take them down because he wanted this situation to be done with. After I took them down and he continued to threaten me and draw out the situation. If he wanted it to end, he needs to stop as well. If he didn't realize that he was being recorded, it simply shows his stupidity seeing that the camera was in plain sight with a little red light.
