Start by getting a SMALL set of 5 mini's (Minitures) which should include a paint brush and 5 mini's and a leaflet, Also if your serious get a Codex for 40k or an Army book for Warhammer fanatsy the main diffrence between the two are 40k is more space and atomic weapons and aliens whilst Warhammer fantasy is more night is shining armour and dragons hope this has helped.
