i remember, not being impressed with this album when it first came out, so i took it back to Virgin becase i needed the $20 for food anyway. flash forward 2 years and now i have money and i went to see Portishead live. damn, everything they did from 3rd was fucking amazing, especially this song. this one stood out in my mind the most. plus, i was completely baked.

Trip-hop: Has been around since the early 90's, originating in Europe, particularly England... and has progressed since then. It basically takes elements of hip hop/experimental/psychedelic/j­azz/electronica and blending samples together until a complete sound formulates.

Portishead perfectly exemplifies this genre!... Adore them!-)

I think the term "trip hop" refers to its use of beats and samples, like hip hop, as well as the scratching and manipulating of certain sounds so it sounds like they're "tripping" and repeating.

This reminds me of early Black Sabbath. Seriously. The arrangment, the augmented fourths (the 'Devil's interval'), the acopalypic thrashes and that brilliant computerised-moan ending. If anything, it is Sabbath's 'Warpigs' that I have in mind.

@mitsu4g63t i am in no way 100% sure of this, but i think the sound at the end is sort of mimicking the sound of "aum" (aka "om") that you hear many buddhist monks singing...
