@smmclaug75 how about snakes on the plane? or american pie? hottie and nottie? all that stupidity being shown to us in recent years and you call this an embarrassment?
@jimbrown257 yeah. In real life they aint nothing like in godfather movies. They are loud-mouthed, narsistics and egomaniacs. Some of them love publicity, like john gotti, they think that they are national heroes and want to brag to newspapers how tough they are. Theyre willing to sale their mothers if the price is right. They aint no man of honour.
I've been reading books about real life mob stories, like Wise Guys and Donnie Brasco. The main thing I've taken away is that The Godfather movies, while excellent in all respects as movies, are about as far from a realistic depiction as you can get. I'd compare it to Roy Roger's version of cowboys. This romantic image of mafiosas being smart and sly and keeping their mouths shut and obeying a strict code of conduct and respect is almost the diametric opposite of the real thing.
very well said. The whole godfather trilogy will always remain a classic cinematic brilliance but it is far from reality. People probably get too deluded by this. Characters like that hardly exist in the real world, they were all too perfectly made up for the movies and that was it
xxxesantxxx: Finally, I read a comment that shares the same views as I do.--I never understood the negative comments on GF111. You're so right. I think it was the perfect way to end this story.----
I can't believe some people think this movie was unnecessary. It wasn't filmed for the money it was filmed to show that Michael starts to regret all the things that he did as he gets older, that's what usually happens and he ends up dying alone. The Godfather trilogy was about Michael's transition into a cold hearted man, but the ice had to melt one day because he wasn't born a monster. He ends up paying for his sins and I think it was the right way to end this story.
@xxxesantxxx it actually was filmed for money. coppola had serious financial problems and they had to go ahead with a script even after mario puzo had passed away. and a few actors didn't return so they basically just had to wing it
@futurebestseller84 you have to admit though given the circumstances, they really pulled it off! I mean Pacino's acting in this was phenomenal and very raw/emotional. Some say part III didn't need to be made I don't mind it for what it is and its a hell of a lot better than many other films out there.
godfather 1 and 2 are my all time favorite movies.....this one just SUCKED...even Robert Duvall said in an interview that AL Pacino just did it for the money...thats why you didnt see Tom Hagen...Robert Duvall said they shouldnt have touched it after the 2nd one...and im sorry but Andt Garcia was horrible...Just because he was Sonny's son, doesnt mean he had to be THAT much of a hot head...ok we get it..you are his son..calm down. Then Al Pacino says the same like to him as Vito said to sonny
@ThePistons4life Come on. The real beef Robert Duvall was not in the movie was because he wanted to be paid the same amount as Al Pacino and when he was turned down he backed out. This is a great movie. In the end Michael suffered most as a result of his daughter's death. Even Ford Coppola said the death of Michael's daughter was the high point of Godfather 1 and 2 where Michael went on a killing spree, even taking out his own brother, Fredo.
@theCuno100 if they kept this as he was at the end of 1 .... and part 2, I think it would have been a better movie. I tried to like it, but the whole immobilare thing, the drama with the pope, and the opera dragged out the movie.
I think that Michael's personality transformation from II to III is believable and the mark of a "great" man. Men who did like he did in II generally have to close up even further, like they were dead in life. Michael's illness, horrible guilt, and the growth of his children fuel the loosening of his character. In the throes of his illness he calls out "Fredo, Fredo!"
Michael has drastically changed from the second movie. In 2 he was this cold, silent, calculative mastermind. While he is still a calculative masterminde, he has lost his ruthlessness and has even become more emotional, warm, and such. But, he can bring that summon that fear in people as he did in 2 like when he talked to Zasa about whoever was saying "Fuck, Michael Corleone."
My all time fav character is Connie Corleone!! She is played by Talia Shire who is the greatest actress of all time. Go Connie!!! Everyone should fear you.
Ff coppolla didn't want this film to be called godfather pt 3, he wanted it to be called the death of Michael corleone. I think if you view it as a side story to the first two films as opposed to one of a trilogy, it takes a different viewpoint ( it did to me anyway). Still a quality portrayal of a c1980 mafia family, very very clever how the pope story was interwoven with the real death of John Paul 1.
i actually liked godfather 3. 2 is my favorite. but i think 3 is the closest to the sopranos which is the best mob portrayal of all. the show is phenomenal
@guitarkidsteve I agree though the first 2 movies are my favorites I love part 3 and always will I think the reason most people didnt like part 3 that much is because its where it all ends and it ends in tragedy. I mean heres a man that tries to do all he can for his family but yet we watch him slowly snuff out his soul in the process but then once he tries to redeem himself for what he's done the second things start to look up for the better it all falls apart right in front of his eyes.
One thing you have to realize though is quite some years have went by between part 2 and 3 and Michael has had a lot of time to think about the past... He lost his wife, he barely knows his kids... You see him poor his heart out to the Priest (best part of the movie) Still the worst of the 3 but that's not saying it as a bad thing.
@sfknns Some scenes that I just didn't *buy* because they look badly directed in terms of the actors. There is that scene when Al Pachino is breathing hard and wheezing in the kitchen. Now I like and respect Al Pachino, one of the best in the business but that whole scene looked bad- to me at least. Still I have the blu-ray set so I shall find out soon enough.
@Strider1978 , LOL, he was having a panic or heart attack I think he was supposed to be wheezing & breathing hard, plus he was thinking about what he did to Fredo! granted Godfather III wasn't as good as the first 2 films but it was still pretty good!
@sfknns Indeed, I can understand that. I'm saying that... I was not expecting a classic, it just looked 'forced'- like a movie that was just made but perhaps should not have. It's just an opinion, I'll probably watch the film over the Christmas period.
