Yes, when stores lose revenue, the employees pay the price, but it's not as directly as most people think. Most stores incorporate estimated loss into their budgets. As an employee making not much more than minimum wage (unless you're a fatcat) it's not worth it to take the risk of chasing a thief down to get back a 40 dollar cable, especially when it's multiple times a day, obviously with reasonable variation in price etc... Some places, you're not allowed to touch the thief. You let them go.

One of the managers is pretty much famous in the store for chasing a thief out of the store and across the road to the mall.
