People in these comments are ridiculous. Here is a clue, if you can't find out how much a game engine license costs via their website, you can't afford it. Which is why you must apply for an "evaluation version" where they decide if your game is worth it. Source, Unreal, id engines = around $300,000 to license. They also take a small cut of every sale you make. Unity = $1,500 and you keep all of your profits (minus what the app store distributors take). Too expensive? Perhaps for kids.
Just like to add, 2 million + polygon model on a 9600 GT running at 400 fps with all those features. Yeah right next you'll tell me you got a 2 million polygon scene to run at 100 fps on a 360.
Some of you are either blind or complete idiots. If anyone believes nikkoid, I can guarantee you don't work in the games industry -- just some try hard kid. It is easy to see that the C4 test is using real time shadows and motion blur while Unity is not de facto the test is bull shit and not fair. I bet he tried to test it at first in a fair way but C4 won; however nikkoid either can't program in C++ therefore can't use C4 or just likes Unity better. Either way it still isn't a fair test
@BaronDewy Real-time shadows? i watched that test and i can tell you it doesn't... there is not a single shadow casted by that ship, all the 'shadows' on the ship itself we purely from a standard lighting shader there isn't a single CASTED shadow.
Unity got a huge edge since the Indie version became FREE. The competitors cannot follow unless they change their business model...
They x3 their customer base in one month! Lot of people are using Unity (including Electronic Arts just to name one) and of course you can see it in the forums. Ask a question and you get answers in the minute...
- It has 3 types of languages you can use to program scripts.
- Indie 2.6 (free version) has 85% of elements that professional version has, the 15% remaining are dynamic shadows, render monitoring, the initial logo deleted, avi textures. You really CAN do a great game with free version having the power to reach a Ps3 or Xbox360. style without problems, because this engine is enough fast to render anything...
Unity is the best game engine (for me at least) because this:
- Is 4th place in world´s best game engine (the three before are great but none has a indie commercial license)
- Unity has the capability to do games for Ps3 for sure (for now only wii, pc, mac and iphone), the render speed the techniques are incredibles, and is the faster web render engine never seen.
- The easy you learn and the compatibility Assets from modelers and the level of tutorials and community are simply awesome.
we can't do wii and iphone games using unity in windows and mac!!
i contact them, they said to develop wii games:
The first step is for you to become a Nintendo Authorized Developer and obtain a Nintendo Wii Development Kit (NDEV). The cost of obtaining your NDEV will depend on the size or your organization and can range from $3000-$10000.
Once you've done that we can license you the Unity engine for use on the Wii, and we do that on a per-title basis.
Yes you can sell them... you will just have a nasty Unity screen at loading and some things like full screen shaders and water are not as good as in the pro version. Unity is growing with a very solid community of real pro who can answer any question in the forum which is what I like the most.
You can use the 30 days demo, everything works. Spend some time with the editor. It is very powerful and you can do amazing thing just with drag and drop like Photoshop or 3dsmax. This is not for everyone, some people will better like the C4 pure C++ approach. Then you can decide which one is best. I own both, and I like Unity better but some people are fan of C4, it is a really powerful engine for doing 1st person shooters for example...but the Unity's editor is better.
Yea,the proggraming language is not concerning me since I can read tutorials and learn.Unity is also faster than C4 in rendering. However,I would like realtime soft shadow rendering, but thats only pro version.I'm so confused on what to get.I have a whole list of engines similar to Unity and C4.Maybe I should try all of them in their demos...
Are you using realtime lights and shadows on this unity scene? I don't see any on the small peaces of the ship. If not them i see why the C4 one would run so low with a highpoly object like that, it is casting shadows for all that geometry and if is running at 10 fps them is a very fast engine. The unity scene does look much better.
nice graphic.. how you do it ??

most impressive ship model.

It doesnt run at 400 fps. Unit y tries to compensate for the lag in the editor. Run the FPS script thats what it really si

@Slegarthoth Well, thats what torrents are for :) (I'm not much of a torrentor, but seriously? Im not paying 1,500 dollars!!!!)

try animating 200+ characters in view with unity and try again with c4, the latter will win by far..

Unity sucks, why would a developer use a shite engine when they can use UDK, or even Source for that matter at a much lower (See: Free) cost?
hunterwolf53 1 year ago
@hunterwolf53 because for commercial developers those engines are NOT free, and in fact the licensing fee is usually upwards of $10,000
the fact that unity is $1500 is a bargain

@1sp3ng1 Source using the Alien Swarm SDK is free.

@hunterwolf53 i'm not sure you can SELL anything you make with alien swarm SDK .
I did not look it up deeply though.

does EA know about the CRAP character controller in unity?
does EA know about that the CRAP character controller can´t be pushed by a moving platform or wall?
does EA know about that the CRAP character controller can´t be ONLY on top of a moving platform?

@nikkoid My problem with Unity is that you have to code in either Java or C#, when I've been learning C++.
