I met Barbieri hortly before her death; I bowed deeply and told her that I thought she was "the greatest Azucena ever," to which she replied "I know." She was one of the few to scrupulously observe Verdi's markings and she dramatically inhabited the part to a frightening degree. This is from the magnificently conducted La Scala complete recording.
My favorite Azucena--anche ottima attrice, la Barbieri. Peccato che non sia piu postato il brano da lei nel filmato del Trovatore con Del Monaco dagli anni 50.

What is superb about this is her connection rhythmically to this piece.. seldom observed by other mezzos .. Barbieri was a major voice.
