  • Response (part 2): Progress Energy has highly trained employees who follow strict processes and procedures for monitoring the tritium levels in and around the company’s nuclear plants to ensure that we are operating within federal guidelines. We are committed to protecting the health and safety of the public, and to being good stewards of the environmental resources entrusted to us.

  • Response (part 1): Thank you, 1stsmosh, for taking the time to write and provide your comments. You are correct, Harris Lake tritium was 23,800 pCi/L in January 1994, however quickly dropped back below the 20,000 pCi/L federal limit within the same month. There were never any restrictions placed on fishing.

  • Tritium was also found in water around Waterford CT and MontPelier VT nuke power plants...Tritium leaks out of these facilities and it's not going away soon. The half life is approximately 12.32 years, which means if all those reactors shut down, would take 25 years for the Tritium to dissipate....Unfort, the reactors wont shut down so the source of Tritium is constantly renewed.

  • Tritium was found in Harris Lake a few years ago and no fishing was allowed. " the NCDRP found 23,000 pc/l of tritium in Harris Lake in January 1994. This water was from a site that was used as drinking water for Harris plant employees, a practice that was quickly discontinued. This measurement exceeded the federal limit of 20,000 pc/l for tritium in water. That same year the NCDRP took a reading of 1260 pc/l of tritium in Lillington water.
