  • schopenhaurs writings are indeed a pleasure to read

  • Philosophically speaking, Descartes sucks dick

  • Plato is the BOSS, love his idealism !!!

  • I think Bertrand Russell ought to clearly be in the top 5 of this list.

  • Hey, where is Parmenides?

  • That is true.

  • What about Plato's teacher? Socrates?

  • @galtai He didn't wrote anything. All that is knew from him it's because Plato

  • @galtai

Socrates didn't write anything. In fact, we only know about what he said through his student Plato, as well as a number of others such as the historian Xenophon and the play write Aristophanes.

  • No kant?

    hmmm...

  • Nietzsche was a madman. His philosophy if taken to it's logical conclusion will lead to madness. I personally would have Aristotle on this list and also one of the great Christian philosophers like Augustine,Thomas Aqunias,Chesterton etc

  • @godriczimmerman Logic you bring up and then go on to list a bunch of Dark Ages theology peddlers ............

  • @S2Cents The idea that you could criticize the writings of Thomas Aquinas or Augustine as illogical, of all things, is so laughable it makes me wonder how much of of their work you've actually read

  • @godriczimmerman w/ both of 'em *faith* trumps logic, faith in one all powerful God.

  • @S2Cents "It is idle to talk always of the alternative of reason and faith. Reason is itself a matter of faith. It is an act of faith to assert that our thoughts have any relation to reality at all. If you are merely a sceptic, you must sooner or later ask yourself the question, "Why should anything go right; even observation and deduction? Why should not good logic be as misleading as bad logic? They are both movements in the brain of a bewildered ape?......

  • @godriczimmerman I guess we disagree about the reasonableness of confident belief in reason and the extent to which faith is justified by perceived limitations of rational discourse or the power of reason our ape species is empowered by. In any case faith in visible, or the bleeding obvious isn't the same and nor does it warrant faith in the unproven, lacking in evidence invisible.

  • ....The young sceptic says, "I have a right to think for myself." But the old sceptic, the complete sceptic, says, "I have no right to think for myself. I have no right to think at all." G.K. Chesterton

  • Germany injure the human rights.Rich germans fight 18 years with my family. They essay to kill my mother me and my sister.Germans give me 14 years medicals to make me sick.My poor mother cry but germans have no pitty.

  • Aristotle????

  • What about Thomas Pain? I believe he should be on the list..

  • i think nietzsche is the greatest...

  • @Alejandrocatheycv nitch is a tool, check betrand russel feedback on'em...

  • I disagree completely with Descartes, his style is horrible and could easily write what he's trying to say in a better way than he did in the Meditations. I think as far as French philosophers are concerned only a few actually manage to write in a good and clear style

  • @Shreddersebbes

    -

What are you talking about? 'Meditations' is one of the more clearer texts among the great philosophers.

  • @AgApE010 well he doesn't quite make it that clear really that his dualistic system is really a monism where he arbitrarily divides reality into two completely distinct things without ever bringing them back very well.

  • Where is Aristotle?? U added Camus without adding Aristotle?? U don't have idea about philosophy....

  • @Jeffanos well technically we don't really have Aristotle's work per se to judge, what we do have as lecture notes and whatnot is very incoherent and hardly an enjoyable read (compare Nichomachean Ethics to any Platonic dialogue and you might get what I'm pointing to)

  • I would add Francis Bacon to the list. People believed him to be the author of Shakespeare's plays for a reason. Other than that, great choices! My personal favourite is Schopenhauer.

  • @pedterson great point!

I agree, Bacon was a wonderful writer!

  • @mrfatd excellent video ...undoubtdely germans philospher r high class .....what u think of eastern philosphers ..like sri aurobindo ,ug krishnamurti

  • 1. Camus, 2. Nietzsche, 3. Montaigne, 4. Voltaire,

If we are talking about the beauty of the writing i think these guys need to be in the top 10, Camus is no question the master in my mind. I'm not saying these are the best philosophers, but certainly the best writers IMO..... if anybody says Hegel or Heidegger I'll take offence to that (not that it would detract anybody from doing so) ahahahhaha

  • 1) Marx 2) Hegel 3) Kant 4) Hume 5) Leibniz 6) Spinoza 7) Descartes 8) Aristotle 9) Parmenides

    10) Heraclit

  • Plato the greatest writer of philosophy...? Seems a bit of an idealistic stretch.

  • @BoStevoD I agree. Its much like saying Kant or Rand are the best. I think the number one would have to be Aristotle, who basically lead down the ground for empirical classification.

  • @BoStevoD well most active philosophers will probably agree that his dialogues are some of the most beatiful literature ever written. I mean you don't have that many philosophers where you reread a text as "easy" as some of the dialogues might seem (the Phaedo is a great example for that) and discover more and more layers of complexity every time you reread it (it took me 4 reads and 2 years to understand the Phaedo, the 5th time I read it more stuff just came up^^)

  • coolllllllll

  • Oh yeah, how about William James?

  • Do you count Emerson as a philosopher?

  • Descartes is a garbage philosopher, and the only decent thing in Meditations is his admission of solipsism.

  • Where's Kant????

  • I've taken several philosophy courses. While they do give one a lot to think about and can , I feel, vastly impact one's view on the world...they are hard. So convoluted.

  • No Stirner....

  • My personal favorite is Schopenhauer, one of the interesting things about reading his work today is that you can feel he was pushing the limits within the frame of time he was living in, as if he was writing from intuition, as articulate as he was.

But if he was alive today he would have been able to express his views better.

Best example is of course his concept of "will".

  • Absolutely, Schopenhauer is one of my favorites, I am reading his world as will and representation right now. It is so pessimistic in parts, so I don't like his bias there but I think that he is so smart that I continue reading and it is refreshing. His writing is very concise and he has a science to his philosophy. Schopenhauer wanted to know, what he could and his insights have improved my life, the pessimism though is wretched and I am convinced he had some problems.

  • @benscience21 He was sadly a very bitter person, he grew up in a upper class family but his mother lost everything, so he had to endure a lot through his life.

  • Plato, without a doubt is the greatest. The father of Logic, such a great mind, I'm glad God gave us such great minds.

  • La imagen de Marx es una idiotes del autor de esta publicación

  • No, est totalmenet correcto.

  • Understandable.

    Love Plato.
