Actually, the rest of the story has not been told. Napoleon knew that he could no longer defend this vast territory which stretched up to the Canadian border. He knew it was only a matter of time before settlers would occupy the land anyway and they would claim it under Manifest Destiny. Napoleon did not sell the land as was mentioned. What he did sell was the claim that the French owned the land. That land belonged to the natives that had lived there. That's the rest of the story.
