My God how curious it was to watch a movie with a brilliant performance by Alan Rickman... together with Kevin Costner's DULLNESS xD my God... Alan saved this movie.
It's amazing how he gets to give most of the funniest lines and actions in the movie without making his character look less threatening. In fact they make the character all the more menacing and creepy! Awesome performance!
The term to "Steal a scene" was probably invented by Kevin Costner after making this film because he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag! And certainly not next to REAL actors like Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman! Notice how well a scene is told when the lesser characters are just as good and not afraid of someone "stealing a scene". Costner needs to learn that ALL actors need to be good at their craft in order for a scene to work!
@Samsis2 Obviously you don't have a clue about acting. Costner is a good actor and he has improved over the years just like most good actors do. Freeman and Rickman are great actors. Rickman just isn't as good in "good" roles as Freeman. But Costner is a good actor. The main problem people like you have with a man like him is his looks.
@Millamoren1975 WTF? Did you even read what I wrote?? I have no interest in "pretty" actors who can't act. Costner is ok just not in scenes next to great actors like Rickman and Freeman. Geez!
@Samsis2 Well, the sign of a truly great actor is to give room for the other actor(s) in a scene to shine and besides that in this movie you can't compare the two since Rickman has all the cool shit to work with and Costner just has the hero-part which any moviefan knows is not a role where the actor gets to show off.
I'm starting to doubt my memory now but I'm sure I saw a scene with Rickman storming through the castle in a rage and kicking either a dwarf or a peasant off a stool on his way. It made me laugh so much that I've since looked out for it when I've seen repeats on TV but it has disappeared. Does anyone remember this or is it a figment of my imagination?
Character actors like this should get Oscars every year. This man is so consistantly good in whatever he plays. Maybe one day he will get his due rewards but until then, cancel Xmas!
Sounds good to me!! Would love to see the Sheriff kidnap and ravish Maid Marion! It would make up for Christmas having been cancelled. Kevin redeemed himself in DWW, but not doing much these days.
I reckon the only reason that film was made, was to raise Alan Rickman's profile as an actor. Why else would they cast Kevin Costner to play one of our most beloved Anglo Saxon folk heroes?! Somebody should create an alternate ending, where the Sheriff kills Robin Hood, marries Maid Marion and becomes Master of the Universe!!!
merciful beheading- having Alan Rickman sing to you as you get your head chopped off so you have something nice to take your mind off the whole procedure.
Your opening slide about Rickman stealing the show was SO accurate! His scenes were about the only parts of this movie worth watching ... although Morgan Freeman was excellent too.
On paper and in the film the Sheriif in this version was never that well developed, he was a borderline pantomime villain but Rickman made something out of the performance that some couldn't have. He managed to steer clear of going too OTT and he delivered the best lines he undoubtedly recieved in the movie with aplomb!
Oh yes, indeed Alan Rickman does steal the show in this film and well Alan Rickman was the reason why I wanted to see this film! And now I own it Ha! Man I love the christmas line.
i love how he turned down this part twice, then when they finally convinced to him to play the sheriff, he just steals the show effortlessly like its just his job :P ....suppose it is
The weak link in Robin Hood Men In Tights was the sheriff. Because there was just no way they were gonna be able to find a dude whos funnier than Alan Rickman.
The movie could have been even funnier. However, Kevin Costner, acting like a spoilt brat had a lot of Alan Rickmans scenes deleted from the film as he was annoyed how popular the Sherriff was. People at the original premiere screening before release were all cheering the sherriff and this totally pissed off costner who got the film edited and he refused to ever work with Rickman again.
@elppa284 yep, Costner really threw his toys out of his pram. I would have loved to have seen the unedited version of the film. Methinks Costner was jealous because Rickman was a better actor and did not have a lousy accent or hair that looked like a dead rat on his head.
too funny lol. i don't know about that new Robin hood. I will see it but i don't think i can be as good as this one. Especially going agaist Alan Rickman's Nottingham...i don't know
My fav but us where he knocks the drink into his face and when he calls him a ferret! I also LOVE the bit when he tries to rub the drawn on scar off of the statue.
@LadyViolet7 absolutely correct, a lot of his scenes were removed because Costner threw a tantrum at how popular the sherriff was. He has never worked with Rickman since.
I remember when I was 'grown up' and watched this again.. weren't really sure if he DID say: "And call of christmas!" seems like such a blooper thing.. but it's great! :D
