It certainly is Groovy, as with most RJ episodes the Tshirt is the big budget expense. This was made for me at a Tshirt while you wait place. The font reminded me of the "Goodies" font circa mid seventies. Thanks for watching.
I am delighted you said that- that is exactly the conversation for us to brake through to accomplish anything.
Having said that: If not now, when and how?
It will not magically be easer as time goes on. When the USA was formed we had a chance for national gold banks- that would certainly make a difference today. What you and I will see in our lifetimes is a global capitalist state. The problem with that is it still screws you and me. You cant fight capitalism and win.
I think you just have to keep at it. You can't do it all on your own, anymore than you can change a deep felt prejudice in one conversation at a party, but you can do your bit. You might not be able to change a closed mind but you might just add a little doubt. And bit by bit as others add to the conversation maybe... But don't give up even though it might be hopeless, there ARE others out there and they need your help.
Nope not really interested in who is with the pot, I am interested in what is with the pot. People around pot speak insightfully but I am more interested in actions that are going to be taken. Who will smoke it? Is it still growing? Where is it located, Ect... Or if the person with the pot had something brilliant to share that would call me into action that may draw my attention else where. Such as "lets unite all religions & start a world government, here is how..." That point it would be "WHO"
Couldn't agree more about the "lets unite all religions & start a world government, here is how..." To be honest the "how" is the hard part. If I knew how I would have thrown the switch ages ago... I guess you gotta find what part of the "how" you can do and run with it, as hard as you can. Not all of us can dig wells... me I'm a loudmouth so I try to be a voice in the wilderness. The hardest part is the better world we imagine to create probably won't come in our lifetimes.
As a Christian who believes in all the points of the faith( i.e. Jesus is God, Jesus is the only way to Heaven, etc.), I can honestly say, I respect you, while I believe your views are wrong, I can respect them. You are not one to bash the faith with atheistic and/or agnostic views in a derogatory way. While I believe I can refute a few of your points, I have no desire to do so here. Message me if you feel like hearing my points. Until then.
Disappointed. Rude Jesus, your blows are too soft to cause anyone to change their mind. you have a very impressive skill at botany, but your talents in argumentation are sadly lacking in this video. Proof is a funny serpent, isn't it. By what standard should it be measured? When philosophies can poke holes in everything and prove nothing, it seems a man can fervently argue that he does not breath air, all the while his lungs beg to differ.
Evidence and proof are 2 different things. U can be given lots of evidence that Jesus is God, but if you fail to see the evidence as proof. Some Creationists say they won't believe in evolution till they see a monkey give birth to a human. Their idea of proof is so confined that it disregards all other evidence.
It is good to keep an open mind, and it is good to study so your mind can properly focus. but a dilated mind can cause many problems
As I tried to argue in the video its not so much a matter of proof, one way or the other, but simply that a human Jesus makes for a better story, at least for me. I think Jesus' pushing on, for what he thought was right, despite his doubt, makes him more not less worthy of our admiration. Though not my worship.
I'd be interested to know what you believe, or not.
I think Braveheart is a much better story for that sort of popular translation. (historians hate that movie for being totally inaccurate.) the Mel Gibson story of Braveheart is a much better story than what really happened.
The story arch of jesus only gets weaker by making him only human. you would have to cut out half of his teachings and many of the plot points would make no sense. In your story, what did he "think was right"? What was the motivation?
Unfortunately I haven't seen Braveheart so I can't comment on the story details but I wouldn't have thought it was comparable with the Jesus story. Jesus advocated non-violent resistance, the resistance in Braveheart, at least from the clips I've seen, seems to be violent. I wouldn't say one or other makes for a better story just that they are fundamentally very different stories.
Jesus and Braveheart were both delivered to their murderer and chose to die for their cause. they both push on, through their doubts....admirable. Braveheart dies with hope of freeing Ireland from English rule. Jesus dies for the sins of the world.
He was charged and killed claiming to be the messiah. But if He is merely human, wouldn't it be easy for him to explain that there must be a mistake. that would be like me dying for not taking back claims that I'm the Queen of England.
Jesus did know he would die and rise again(win), and claimed it often. He claimed to be God. He accepted worship and told others to follow Him, not his teachings.
To divinely forgo the death on a cross would not fulfill his promise.
there is a difference between knowing you will die and experiencing the passion of it. To take these divinities from Jesus turns him into a crazy hobo who said some nice things in the middle of all his rants.
"I saw the devil fall from heaven like lightning" WHAT?
Unconditional love of a crazy man! All the man had to say was. "I love you all, but I'm sorry, I'm not the Messiah." Then he could go on living. No harm. No foul. john 19:7
Best example of worship: in all 4 gospels:
Matt 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, Luke 7:36-50, John 12:1-3. This thread started about proof testing. I find that when Jesus says I AM (john 8:58) he is knowingly using the name God gave to Moses. You can interpret them differently now, but that would disrespect 1st century culture.
I'll look these up, thanks. I hope this won't sound like a cop out but as I have pointed out elsewhere I don't necessarily believe that the bible of itself 'proves' anything, I like to take most of it with a pillar of salt.
However I certainly give most weight to the Gospels when it comes to the Jebus stuff, it was written closer to when it happened by people who claimed to at least have known him.
That's a good point. And the really good question to be asking. I wouldn't call it illogical, but definitely paradoxical. Mark 15:34 is the fulfillment of Gods promised salvation. I'm not an authority on this, but somehow, on the cross Jesus took on sin and was cast out of God's communion. Honestly, it can't really be explained in 500 characters. I think, if the Old Testament and Jesus own words didn't foretell such a paradox, I would be much more skeptical of Mark 15:34.
Ok first I'm not the best one to be arguing the bible learnin' as I ain't no scholar but...
-Jn19:7 Sure but by the same token if he had committed to taking one for the team why not say "I am God, worship me" as we know he kept schtum, and left it open.
-The Gospel versions: (four accounts of the same annointing) While it could be interpreted as worship, it could also simply be symbolic of his coming death. (Like with the symbolic gifts at his birth, was it the myrrh?)
Well yes JC does invoke the (Popeye) "I yam what I yam" but I would again argue that it is inconclusive, particularly as he relies on "not being god" when arguing with the false teachers earlier in the chapter.
He cites God, as his witness, then argues the LAW ("that when TWO agree...")
Actually there's also an interesting conundrum at the begining of the chapter.
-If Jesus were God, he would be without sin and therefore able to cast the first stone at the adultress, in fact if he were God he would be disobeying his own law if he didn't"
But I guess this only goes to prove that we probably won't settle this with bibles at twenty paces. Maybe we should agree to disagree 'til the next episode/special.
there are certain benefits to being God, and having all the joys of plurality and unity at the same time. I believe you also said that God is mysteriously One and Many at the same time. I think you are in the John 8:27 camp.:)
The Popeye invocation builds on the "God as witness" statements. and the result is that the Jews tried to stone Jesus(the implied reason it blasphemy). and if you want to bring up John 10, please be willing to translate and contextualize Psalms 82.
Don't forget my further cop out that I only believe in the 'possibility' of there being a God. Further, I don't really know what the true nature of God is or isn't and I'm not the best bible interpreter available on youtube.
Why don't you have a crack at Mark 15:34, you said it was complicated, have a go.
I stand by it being illogical that God doubted God and accused Himself of abandoning Himself.
This all began over story: so explain what two gospels claim are the hero's dying words.
I understand that cop out. However, if you are going to analyze an ancient work of art, it is only proper to do so in the right context. I think you referenced John 10 previously, "you are all gods". which comes right after "I and the father are one".
as for Mark 15, it's really hard to explain. It's like explaining love. If you don't think Jesus is God, I doubt that this verse will change your mind. If you have doubts as to whether or not Jesus/God has felt man's pain and suffering then, yes this is a good verse to go to. Christ was experiencing the same exile from God as Adam and Eve did in Eden. By willingly taking this punishment, though sinless, He pays the price of original sin.
How can God(Jesus) be exiled from God? Honestly, I don't know. I can't even pretend to. I think its part of the mystery of a Triune God. BTW, I don't find this to be a grand scale cop-out. There are many mysteries that philosophy doesn't solve, and yet we live just fine with the paradox. We constantly live with untestable assumptions, and strong faith that the future will be like the past.
and... sorry, the Irish slip up was really just a stupid mistake on my part. I always confuse the two words. I love you all! I'm sorry. I'm not the messiah.
yeah a place called hell! And he won't find one person to put his ass out when he's burning up, he'll be wishing he could get some1 to pour gasoline on him to quench his thirst. He'll be sorry trust me!
Yup I know my God and what He is good for. I would never make a mockery of His son as u are doing, I really feel bad for you cuz ur journey on this Earth is useless, God's intentions were for us to believe in Him and accept his son as our personal savior! U need to re-evaluate your life and beliefs! Peace
Absolutely agree. To me the main Jesus message was that we should all love each other. Everything else is advertising.
Actually I reckon Xmen comics have heaps of spirituality, like a lot of art and popular culture. I reckon I've learnt as much about God and spirituality from the Simpsons as I have from anyone or anything else.
I hope you aren't accusing me of not being heretical enough... If so I'll try harder
I reckon all sincere attempts at religion have something to offer those seeking the God/Spirit/Nothingness thing. I don't think any have all the answers.
My friend, you greatly underestimate the reliability of the New Testament documents. I will give you one example: If the writers of the 4 gospels truly believed that Jesus was the Son of God, and that a person's eternal disposition depends on what they do with him, then would they not be very careful to reproduce the oral tradition of the 1st century church's teaching regarding Jesus as it actually was? I would be interested in knowing your religious upbringing.
Thanks for your interest. I guess my thing with the bible is that I don't think all the bits are equally important. "The Ten Commandments" obviously are and are presented in the equivalent of Bold/Caps Lock. I think Jesus' distilling of these ten laws to two "Love the Lord your God (for comms 1-4), and love each other (4-10) is brilliant. Psalm 23 is a favourite with many.
My religious upbringing was generic christian lite, but I was allowed to ask questions.
I guess that would depend on whether or not you believe that God is the one who oversaw the writing of it through the mind and heart and emotions of sinful men. I do believe that because Jesus believed it. I do agree that the 10 commandments and Jesus summary of them down to two are very important. In fact, I would boil the whole Bible down into two categories; the law, and the gospel. The law is what will condemn us and the gospel is what God has done to save us.
The law which ever since the fall of Adam we cannot keep will condemn us. The gospel starting with the promise to Eve that her Seed will crush Satan's head is the gospel in type and shadow. And so it goes throughout redemptive history until God comes down in the person of Jesus, the Christ. The four gospels are in fact pretty good history for 1st century culture. Something tells me that you were never taught what Justification is all about, would that be correct?
Which kind of Justification do you mean through our deeds, God's grace or Jesus' sacrifice?
If I had to pick I'd obviously be in the "works" camp but I don't believe in Original Sin and I reckon the Eden story is rubbish.
The idea that I should be grateful to be forgiven for something I didn't do and that happened six thousand years ago, is an insult to reason. That we should be punished for it is a human rights violation on a global scale.
Psychotic dribblings from breakfast bowls in the psych ward at Glenside refridgerated by nurses and re heated in a second hand microwave the 7th time. Was that a marijuana plantation? As part of a religious programme about our lords rising? This tests my capacity to forgive. The Warlords who grow opium in afghanistan love this guy. As for your statement that a human Jesus makes the story weaker and somehow wrecks half his teachings, you'll have to explain?
As I see it Jesus' message has more power coming from a human.
Futher there are at least two problems that immediately spring to mind if the character of Jesus is God:
RudeJesus 3 years ago
An all powerful Jesus (as was pointed out at the time) could have come off the cross, this makes him not a martyr but a masochist.
An all knowing Jesus would know that however bad it got, he would win in the end.

Jesus and Braveheart were both delivered to their murderer and chose to die for their cause. they both push on, through their doubts....admirable. Braveheart dies with hope of freeing Ireland from English rule. Jesus dies for the sins of the world.

A commercial for their product aimed at good aussie kids!Offends all who stand by our diggers! If Kevin Rudd had any guts this ratbag would be charged with treason!
