The max thrust level on that Honest John wasn't anywhere near 8000 lb. It might have been close to 8000N (about 1800 lb), but even that would require the O and M motors to light together, which didn't happen. Tough break on the burn through, it was a pretty cool looking rocket!
It's been a while since the launch, but I seem to recall the builder told me the three rocket motors were to put out around 35,000 Newtons ... maybe he was just bragging? or pulling my leg for fun to see if I'd fall for it? At any rate, it was a spectacular launch even though two engines misfired.
Launch site in Orangeburg, SC by a model rocket club that meets on a 1-mile diameter sod farm. These guys are SERIOUS about their rockets and this 450-lb super-size model was the prize of the day. It had two M-class engines and a single experimental O-class engine, too. Unfortunately, the two M-class engines failed on launch. Note one shoots off to the side and one falls out in mid-flight. Still spectacular in my book!!!
