Just made this mod, minus the switch.. and it works well... this video was defiantly a big help... although the casing is very fiddly to get on and off its worth it if you need to use a external unit without having to pay for another flash...
when i got the Nissin Di622 i didn't know it didn't work with external units only found out afte getting it. Novice mistake! glad there was a way to mod it... and as far as i could find this was the best video to show you thought the process
Hi FotoJack, thanks for the MOD videos, just a quick question though, what kind of wire are you using for the MOD? Does it matter? i hear that using the wrong type increases resistance and make the flash less reliable? Thanks.
the small switch that you attached, is it just to turn the photocell on/off? is the switch connected directly to the capacitor beside the cell which you cut in the video?
Just to add info. I have been searching cheaper alternatives to pocket wizard and flash wave to trigger my modded flash. I found the Yongnuo RF-602 N1 works great. These are available in various online shops. It's cheap and reliable -- JUST MAKE SURE YOU REPLACE THE BATTERIES THAT CAME WITH THE SET. The batteries are of poor quality and can easily drain out, specially the two AAA batteries in the receiver. I'm able to get flash synch of 1/200, the max for my EOS 450D. Thanks FotoJack! :)

@FotoJackTube ok, so i'm about to buy the parts already. I just can't find the parts list (i saw fotojack es but it was in spanish). I just know i need: Soldering Iron + tin, cutters, wires (any specifics?) and a 3.5 mm jack. missed anything?
Hi @arioatu, I chose a phone jack, because it is very easy to find in any store, the ready-made cables are cheaper. Any other also can serve and if the connector is smaller, easier to place inside..
@elijahdomingo This MOD does not alter the functions of flash, you can use it in slave mode. But the photocell is pre-trigger and only fires with TTL shots. To use with a 285HV I recommend radio triggers.
@FotoJackTube thank you sir I meant willl it fire if I use radio trigger on my vivitar and will the nissin di622 fire from the vivitar's flash. I still am waiting for my vivitar by mail. I have tried my nissin off flash with another camera the kodak compact and it actually fires flash when on slave mode.
Qué crack! muchísimas gracias, estaba apunto de comprarme un Vivitar 285hv más (tengo 2) ya que no podía usar mi Nissin con los receptores... muchísimas gracias por compartir tus conocimientos, funciona de maravilla :)
i had a nissin Di622 too, and can u help me to turn off the standby mode on nissin,
in the normal mode (not in the slave mode) you know that if 5 second nissin Di622 not used the nissin will standby mode so the ttl light (red light in the low middle) will blink
can i avoid that 5 second standby mode, because i combine it with cactus (wireless triger from ebay) ever 5 second i should press any button to avoid that stndby mode,
how can we discharge the capacitors in this speed-light? Do you have any advice for us? What size resistors should I use? 50ohms/V is good enough? Thank you
I cannot respond to that question, my knowledge about electronics are very basic, Possibly you find in Google the answer. I'm sorry, but i can't help you.
In my case I let the flash with no batteries for 24 hours. After that I opened the case and measured the main capacitor to see if there is still juice in it and the was ZERO. It was very strange for me. I thought that not even after an year the capacitors will be empty... it seems that they are not that high quality, but this was my gain. Even the less, I had a few 50 and 100 ohms resistors if I needed them, but they were useless.
This flash does not accept IR communication. The only way to use off-camera is in slave mode with your photocell inside activated by TTL shoots (Camera built-in flash or any flash TTL)

Good video. I have a working Nissin Di622 speedlite but the hot shoe is broken. kindly suggest how or where to get replacement.

Hi there,
I'm wondering when you're soldering the white and back gray wires at 8:43.
Does it matter which wire goes to where, I mean at the jack.?
Either would also work?

did you still use that graying thing (lead?) when soldering this and the other parts?

@youprefer The silver thing is Tin:

Your website MOD of the Oly doesn't give information on the name of the switch used. Could you provide that part information?
Great MOD, thank you!

what kind of triggers can u use with this?? thank you

@elijahdomingo I have tested with Pocket Wizard Plus II, Cactus V2S and PT04. Sure also works OK with other triggers, but these are what I have

The only way to use radio-triggers with the Di622 is through the MOD and selecting the slave mode to avoid the stand-by.

my question was not about in general how to discharge the capacitors but in this case, for the Nissin Di622.

Thank you for sharing with us your idea and how to mod the Nissin Di622. I did it and it works.
Thank you!

My way to discharged is not very High-Tech ;-)
1) Press the cover of the batteries with a hand but without fitting.
2) Power On the flash and select Manual mode and full power.
3) I Press test button for firing and free the cover of batteries before to start the charge.
4) I am going to sleep and continued to the next day
So far, it has worked very well

I've made 4 MODs. I never give importance to the polarity and all work OK, if it is important, I am very lucky :-)
FotoJackTube 2 years ago
is that safe?
renzshigeno13 2 years ago
Before beginning this MOD and to guarantee safety, is very important that the capacitor is fully discharged.
FotoJackTube 2 years ago
how can I fully discharge capacitors in this speed-light? A 50 ohms/V resistor is good enough? Please advice! Thank you!

Te felicito y te agradezco que coloques estos videos y la info sobre flashes que pones en tu blog, son muy pocos los que hay en español. Gracias.
