This song reminds me of the life of a robot... in the beginning, the robot sees it's first life, at around 0:20 it gets it's program installed, and at the end, the robot has been alive for centuries, and in the final moments before it shuts down, it manages to achieve sentinence...
For those without shadered graphics, the game still looks great if you download free OXPs (expansion packs) which increase the visual quality of ships, stations, and planets within the game.
@raeka4eva Yes. Vista Home Premium here, on my admittedly underpowered laptop, works quite well. For best results your pc should have a separate graphics card, to handle the shader graphics, but its not necessary.
Downloaded a couple of OXPs (expansion sets), got rock hermit locator, and now I'm buying platinum like cereal. Awesome game! ... and I invested 12k on hyperwave radio :P
Is there any way to use multiple screens/monitors in Oolite or Elite? By this I mean set it up so you could have all four views (front, rear, left and right) simultaneously. That would be sweet!
I hope this never goes online. It will get lame and exploited just like every other online game. I'd rather deal with computer AI any day than some 12 year old with the handle of 'Yuck Fou'.
God bless these Massively Single Player games like Oolite and The Elder Scrolls and the one or two others that are out there. Speaking for myself, I hope there's always a niche for them. :)
Personally, I prefer singleplayer games too, but saying "I hope this never goes online" is just unfair. If it goes online, you can just not play it, while the people who want to play it online and don't care about cheaters will be able to. Win-win.
Just started playing this in the last few days. I can't believe it's been 24 years since the original, it has stood the test of time very well indeed. Still a contender for the best video game of all time.
Oolite is fandom at it's best. Amazing. Thank you.
Possibly the most groundbreaking. Arguably the first "open world" game...no specific rules, no levels to complete (aside from the occasional optional mission)...just go out there and do whatever the hell you want to do.
I love this game. I've been playing the windows version for about a year now and it works on Vista too! Check out the different OXP's (add ons) at the Oolite wiki, I would definitely recommend "commies" and "your ad here" for starters. Never seen the ship which you can dock with (3:00) before; which OXP is it in? Good work...AWESOME
I saw this video on a Linux article and it was this very video that has gotten me hooked on Oolite. Just wish the song on this video came with it though.
I think it's just the fact that graphics take a lot of hard work to do. We'd have all the bells and whistles but you wouldn't believe how much work it takes.
This video has hypnotised me. I remember playing this as a kid on the beeb. One thing, often asked on youtube, what is the song playing? It fits Elite perfectly.
Thanks for the info on this free elite clone well worth downloading. It's a must for any Elite fan, I played it back in the 80's on a BBC Model 'B' for hours at a time. Also download the mods from thehomepage they increase the game.
What computer system was this recorded from? What version of Elite is it?! It looks very different from how I remember it on my old Amiga! Thanks for the upload :D

What OXP is the dockable Bulk Hauler in ?
Chrisfs59 2 years ago
Oolite, the open source version of Elite has casinos as an expansion pack.

If I had to guess, that sounds like something Bender Bending Rodríguez would have said. Very appropriate if you ask me. ; ]

whats the massive one at the start in the demo, in frontier elite 2
the two eagles fly by it?
and the the other ship chases them
i want that one
robjbray 3 years ago
The grey/white ship with the spinning nacelles is an Imperial Courier, the large one it hides under is a Long Range Cruiser.
CaptainHesperus 3 years ago 3
yes I want that one! thanks
robjbray 3 years ago
with todays cpu power i can not imaging how incredible this game could be!
I have always wished you could captain the big haulers.
I don,t know why but i just wish you could.
imagine it being on line with every ship having a human piolet.
and a live stockmarket! wow
oh and lastly you can get out and walk around the stations and citys, if you want may be go to a bar or sleep with a prostitute like gta?
robjbray 3 years ago
You can captain big haulers, like the Anaconda (biggest carrier out there), Python or Boa.

I think the UI and graphics could use a tune-up. I'd be glad to help if I can. I'm really good at GIMP. Can't get blender to work though.

They're supposed to look the way they are. It's a remake of a game from the 80s. It's supposed to retain that old-school look.

senhuan's answer is correct: that is Mac OS X speech synthesis. For other systems, the Hal's Hot Sister OXP provides a prerecorded voice.
