Yeah, heterosexual denouement... Would have been funnier if Olivia had chosen Viola at the end and Orsino had prefered Sebastian, but I supposed Shakespeare did'nt think of that :)
orsino looks like such a creep here, he goes from loving olivia to thinking "hey well i guess now that ceasrio is really a girl... ill take what i can get!"
Does anyone know what the history was between Feste and Malvolio? Why Feste would want revenge on him? I can't help but think that Malvolio had something to do with Feste's previous leaving. That he poisoned the mistress's mind somehow against Feste. . Someone, anyone? :) Songs
@Songsmirth Feste was employed by Olivia's father not Olivia. When he returned he saught employment with Olivia which Malvolio attempted to prevent. I would suspect that Feste was dismissed by Malvolio upon the death of Olivial's father as a consequence of he, being the steward, ran the household as second in command, so to speak. However, the play doesn't make reference to that fact because it didn't have to when it was written. It would have been understood.
@josephonwhidbey Thank you for the information. That makes sense. Was she very young when Feste was let go? Surely, she wouldn't have allowed it to happen if she were older. hummm
I don't trhink that Olivia was very young because her father died not long before her brother did as the story is told. Also, consider that he did gain entrence back into the household and was able to exact revenge against his enemy Malvolio.
I've heard this last song somewhere or think I have. What is the name of it? Ben K is a pretty good singer. Doesn't surprise me. / As strict as Malvolio was I don't respect them for the extent of their joke. Toby might be fun but he's a leech and had no right to mess with another's mind and reputation like this.
4:42 you just have to feel sorry for Malvolio. The poor bugger tried to get Olivia to agree to sex, then he gets shut in a dark room and taunted by Feste.
@er10b I would have done the same as Feste had I been abused in the same manner as he was. How would you like it if Malvolio were your boss ? Nevertheless, I do feel sorry for him in a way because I understand his pain. Emotional pain can be worse then physical pain because it can scar you for life.
hey guys if you search wallaby17171 feste, you can check out my final song in twelfth night. I loved playing feste the jester in my high school shakespeare company and i just want you too check it out.
In Shakespeare at the end of a comedy everyone's standing up, in a tragedy everyone is lying down and in a history NO ONE CARES BECAUSE THE AUDIENCE IS ASLEEP
Nicholas Farrell is so good in this rather small role, his reaction is so touching at 1:21, selflessly glad, just tinged with sorrow over his unrequited love for Sebastian.
Damn, like they don't have enough firearms in that place for Malvolio to use? Because when crap like that happens in our time somebody always walks back into the night club blasting away.
I've realised that Helena Bohnam Carter has very similar clothes in most movies she plays . here, Sweeney Todd, Harry Potter , Fight Club, even Charlie and the Chocolate factory: a lot of laces, gloves without fingers (i have no idea how they are called in English) a lot of black and pink. what is more, her wearing is similar to what she wears daily
I guess because he thought a little too highly of himself and kind of spoiled the fun for a lot of people and I guess people got a little fed up by it. Although Olivia should have done things to help him feel better. In a sense Malviolo brought it upon himself but at the same time it was cruel.
I personally do NOT like Helena Bonham Carter as an actress or a woman. But I have to say; in this movie she was fantastic. Great facial expressions. :P
this is the best part of the movie. this is my favorite play write of Shakespeare. Helena Bonham Carter is ridiculously sexy i wonder if she would have me lol. She is one of my favorite actresses. what a phenomenal talent. and Ben Kingsley is my favorite there are no words to describe this mans talent he is undoubtedly THE MAN. Shakespeare is a Genius.
Hahaha Olivia's face. 1:18 !!!! This makes the entire movie. Just imagine her thought process. Holy shit, I've been in love with a woman. Now this is a little embarassing!
Dear lord Toby Stephens makes one handsome Duke. That voice...wow. And Viola, IMO, is one of Shakespeare's most lovable and admirable heroines. When everyone else is rushing headlong into love, falling in out of love while wearing their hearts on their sleeves, she alone remains constant and sincere in her feelings, yet is willing to step aside and help him win the woman he wants. No wonder he develops such an affection for the loyal and unassuming Cesario and is so ready to love Viola
I love how they match the verses of Feste's song to the characters: "A foolish thing is but a toy," with Sir Andrew's leaving, "'Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gates," when Antonio goes, "When I came alas to wife," with Toby and Maria and "Tosspots still have drunken heads" when Malvolio leaves - which suggests he hasn't learned much from his trials! Feste was really interesting in this, so much emphasis on him being the wisest and most knowing character.
I love this part - especially when Viola eventually gets to kiss Orsino, it's so cute! ♥ Feel rather sorry for Malvolio though, mostly because he was tricked to believe that Olivia loved him... but generally happy endings all round! We're watching this at school, and I have kinda jumped ahead a little *muahaha* xD
@Snazzaroo1845 hahaha sameeeee I saw the Orsino and Viola thing coming but I wasn't sure..... I think I have a newfound appreciation for shakespeare cuz of this xD
I feel sorry for Malvolio and Sir Andrew :(. But it was hilarious! Their faces at the end! XD. Orsino was like yes I'm not gay! and Olivia was like am I a lesbian????
It says in part 12 or so that it was three months both "youths" attended on their respective superiors...Orsino and Sebastian.
I really like this play. I wouldn't have really understood all the "undertones" when I was in middle/high school. There is a ton of gender bending/gender play in this play (see: the the intro, the 'come away, death' scene) and I think Shakespeare sets it up to be okay because of the fact that all the twins had to do was swap places...sorta. Plays with society's rules.
I think your best bet might be downloading a free tool called Audacity and recording the part of this video that you like and saving it as an MP3 file. Or you could use a web tool like Youtube MP3 and finding a way to cut the audio file down to the parts you want. Audacity might be easier.
one word: pheromones. :D No really. I highly doubt Orsino was clueless. The attraction was clear, I think Orsino probably just figured that it was impossible. See also the adoration going on between Sebastian and Antonio. Seventeenth century gender rules are out the window in this play but cultural standards are not, meaning there really wasn't much enlightenment about same sex relationships even being a possibility, at least in the open.
Oh people knew who was having sex with who... society always knows it just wasn't talked about. personally though i think orsino would have issues with changing how he treated viola, he'd been interacting with her as a guy versus a girl and standards were very different then on how men treated women and women acted around men (viola probably would have had a few issues to deal with as well) it's that line "so much against the mettle of your sex" there is so much she did with women would never do
Oh how I cried streams at this scene! Brother and sister once again reunited! My poor tissue box, how it suffered so to have of it ripped away in order to appease these poor eyes of mine
Yes, this is a great version of the play and the music just works so well in this section. A wonderful "happy ending" theme. It sends chills up my spine every time I hear it. It's beautiful isn't? And funny! And sweet!
This play really needs a lot of suspension of disbelief ... I always thought that bit where Olivia says "a sister, you are she" would have been hella awkward in real life. I expect Viola to say, "sooo ... you don't want to kiss me anymore, right?"
"I shall have share in this most happy wreck" = "I'm gonna f... your sister real hard".
