  • Best business decision ever, was for rite aid to continue selling Thrifty ice cream!

  • Thrifty had the best fucking ice cream ever!

  • In the late 1970's, my sister and I would walk or bike 3 miles just to get a Thrifty's ice cream cine the ice cream was so good. Thrift's ice cream is still by far the best!! Just got some last night. Brings back wonderful memories.

  • We used to go to Thriftys after the beach. I remember the triple scoop was only 35 cents!

  • cotton candy is actually pretty good

  • Lemon Custard Ice Cream was my favorite. I remember triple scoops for 25cents. After Thrifty left, I could never find Lemon Custard Ice Cream anymore.

  • Chocolate Malted Crunch still remains supreme over all ice cream. And is still my most favorite. Baskin Robbins, is lightyears behind Thrifty's. They add just the right amount of sugar and ingredients to make it perfect. Last night, we got some chocolate malted crunch, in a tub. I haven't had it in a long time. When i had my first taste. It was like being reunited with an old friend, it's soo good, that i even had some, this morning. lol

  • I like the coconut pineapple and strawberry cheesecake (=

  • there stores may be gone but there

    ice cream lives on

  • Decent ice cream for cheap prices, but the best ice cream I have ever had is at Handels.

  • The ice cream in the 1960s was 5 cents per scoop, and they stacked it high!

Also, they always had old 45 and 33 rpm records piled up in displays for us to go through.

I remember finding The Mamas and Papas, Monday, Monday, we loved it.

  • Man! I miss the triple scoops of Thrifty Ice cream. 15 cents for a single, 25 cents for a double and 30 cents for a triple.

I was a piggy and always got the triple in the mid 80's. Thrifty store on Broadway and fifth streets in Downtown LA.

Pecan prailine, pistachio and strawberry were my choice. Danged goodtimes.

  • Baskin-Robbins was good for exaotic falvours, but for the basics Thrifty's was the best!

  • Every day's a savings day...at Thrifty drug & discount store...your dollar buys you more..at Thrifty's.

  • Yep I buy them at Rite-Aid often. My family's favorites are Chocolate Malted Crunch and Pistachio. Black cherry is also good.

  • Thank God for Ride Aid... still carrying that yummy ice cream!

  • Chocolate Malted Crunch reigns supreme. There is no better ice cream in the world.

  • Ben and Jerrys is overrated this is where its at.

  • YES!!

Thrifty had such fucking awesome ice cream

  • @AltimaNEO It still does today, despite the name change of the store!

  • Well i just bought a 1.75 lbs carton here in Mexico and i paid 65 pesos like 6 US dollars...and its my favorite!!! I even have a picture wen i was 7 and my grandma took a picture of me outside a thrifty store eating a rainbow ice cream cone, now im 37 and its still my favorite ice cream.

    Greetings from Mexico.

  • Man... there used to be a Thrifty near where I live.... just a nice 5 blocks walk. On a hot day, it was well worth the trip to get a scoop of Thrifty's mint and chocolate chip.......... then I'd hang at the Round Table Pizza's arcade, w/o getting any pizza.....lmao. XD

  • I remember those five cent cones from the 70s.

One large pop bottle or two regulars redeemed equaled on ice cream cone. That was how i financed my deserts in college. LOL

  • thrifty is the shit lol

  • I remember getting 5 cent ice cream cones in the late 60s in their Encinitas, CA store near the fairly new I-5.- Guy

  • The cheapest I remember was 35 cents for a single in the 80s.

  • @mhz23 I was a kid it was 15 cents..

  • you guys in the US should be grateful you have this kind of ice cream for cheap. I remember in mexico , I saw it selling for 10 dollars a carton...ridiculous!

  • 10 dollars a carton? Are you serious?????

  • yep. I don't understand why they would want Thrifty Ice cream. it's just CHEAP ice cream that tastes great. lol

why do they call it thrifty when it is so expensive there. LOL

  • Thrifty....Good ice cream.

I remember one commercial where they were talking about the reasons to eat thrifty ice cream.

    Hot day...

    Birthday party...

Then they showed some middle aged guy who was sobbing like a baby. He blurted out that he was eating ice cream because he found out his son was "a gay" or "a fruitcake" - one of the two words.

Hillarious in 1984, but probably wouldnt go over so well today.

  • Last night we had really good ice cream on our dessert at the Elephant Bar Restaurant! Yep, it was Thrifty's brand! It tasted like somebody made it fresh in the kitchen!

  • CHOCOLATE CHIP IS STILL THE BEST!

  • Pineapple coconut, Strawberry, and Mint chocolate chip are my favorites.

  • I've been eating Thrifty ice cream all my life..my teenage daughters laugh at me when I tell them it was a nickle per scoop...its a sad commentary how they cant imagine ANYTHING ever cost only a nickle?!

  • I used to go to the Thrifty on Sepulveda Boulevard in Sherman Oaks/Encino. Seemed, then, like they never fully recovered after the Northridge earthquake.

  • Thrifty - man as a kid in the 80's it was fun to just walk around the store. I felt like I was in the 50's or something. I really recall you could find products or goods at Thrifty that you wouldn't find anywhere else.

  • As a kid I used to get a triple-scoop for 15 cents at a Thrifty in Wilmington. That was back in 1965. The Thrifty is still there at the same location.

  • At thrifty drug and discount stores, your dollar buys your more... at Thrifty!! Wow! I miss it. Rite Aid is just not the same, haha. Thanks for posting. :)

  • THANK YOU for posting more of words to the jingle that has been stuck in my head for years, ;D.

  • I love thrifty's!

  • this is the ONLY icecream I can eat without having lactose symptoms. I cannot figure out why. any other icecream gives me such gas pain it is not worth eating it. thank you thrifty for having something special that agrees with me

  • Thrifty became rite aid later i remember this since i was a little girl

  • I like Thrifty ice cream very much. Unfortunally the Right Aide on Geary Blvd in Richmond district in San Francisco does not carry Thrifty Ice cream any more. Does any body know where can I buy it?

    Thanks

  • chocolate malted crunch! mmm- double scoop for 50 cents! :D

  • I love thrifty's! Rite Aid had it

  • When I was in H.S. my job was scooping Thrifty ice cream...only a quarter a scoop (up from a dime when I was *really* little). My favorite is still double chocolate malted crunch.

  • I loved thrifty!! I used to go every weekend with my grandpa in huntington beach on warner ave.. and I would get the bubble gum flavor..he is gone now and those were some great times.

  • i remember me and my pops every sunday going to thrifty's ordering two double scoops, rocky road. good memories.

  • I think they also used to have a "malted milk" flavor. I don't think I've seen that one anywhere else.

  • Chocolate malted crunch? Yeah, I love that flavor.

  • Does anyone knows the webpage of Thrifty ice cream? Or how to get information on the franchise?

    Thank you.

  • my favorite thrifty ice cream flavors are rainbow sherbert, orange sherbert cookies and cream and black cherry, also i remember the cylinder shaped ice cream scooper.

  • You can now buy Thrifty Ice Cream at Restaurant Depot in the 3 gallon container. It goes for 14.25 per container. That is only 2.75 a half gallon. You have to have a restaurant to shop their though.

  • So I did. On another note I finally graduate college in 19 days. Carne assada burrito and Pineapple ice cream here I come.

  • I remember when the rite-aids was still a thrifty and I'd get ice cream there as a kid.

Recently they had 2 packages for ice cream for $5, SCORE!

The pistachio is amazing, the nuts themselves are actually really good.

  • My favorite flavors are the "Mint Chip" and the "Chocolate Malted Crunch". Its too bad that Rite Aid didn't expand the Thrifty Ice cream brand beyond the California stores.

  • Stone Cold, and especially Baskin Robin are nowhere near the same league as Thrify Ice Cream. As soon as I graduate college, I am getting on a plane back to CA and getting me a Carne Asada Burrito, and than I will hit Rite-Aide and get two scoops of Pineapple in a cup.

  • no more thifty in las vegas

  • I LOVE THE SCOOPER.

  • I get a crave for that orange sherbert every once in a while, but I preferred Clark Drugs' ice cream instead.

  • I remember those triples for 15 cent...in the mid to late 60's too.

  • Sounds like they have some of the flavors that no longer exist now. Thrifty has since become Rite Aid in SoCal and KHJ has become KCAL 9. By the way, the Medival Madness flavor is the best and so is the cookies and creme.

  • anybody but me remember a TRIPLE scoop for 15 cents?? this was early 1960's

  • No, but I do remember 15 cents a scoop in 1980. The commercial doesnt look accurate either, I still remember that my scoops were cylindrical!

  • Bill u are crazy, that's all I can say.

  • hey, just making an opinion...that's all

  • Bill9808 are you serious???? Thrifty Ice Cream BLOWS Baskin Robbins and Coldstone away, not to mention you don't have to pay 5 bucks for 1 scoop. My husband delivers Thrifty Ice Cream through out California, it is locally made in El Monte, Ca in a not so big place. It's awesome when they have family functions for the employees! :)

  • Thank you for posting this commercial. It brought back many wonderful memories. Black cherry was my all-time favorite!

  • thrifty ice cream!!! i was so sad when they renamed the store "Rite Aid". my favorite flavor is Chocolate Malted Crunch, and they're the only ones that make it!!

    what's your favorite flavor?

  • Black Cherry is my all-time favorite!

  • My favorite flavor is Butter Pecan or rainbow sherbet, I did not like when they changed it to those funky neon colors...but they put the old colors back. One more thing, they are changing the packaging this month,so say goodbye to the nice little box. :(

  • That jingle brings back so many good memories.

  • YOU SAID IT!!! I really loved Thrifty Ice Cream. It was DA BOMB!!!! Hopefully when I visit California, I'll stop by Rite-Aid and re-live that great taste.
