The industrialized world of today creates many almost unsolvable problems. And all those problems seem to add up to a foreseeable and sudden collapse. The most important reason for all this trouble is the ubiquitous paradigm of growth which is simply not feasible in a finite world. The necessary changes to save the earth from collapse are of course unpleasant.
