It is my understanding that the cause of this incident is a known design flaw with the MD11 aircraft. The horizontal stabilizer and associated control surfaces were made smaller than that of the DC10 (the aircraft design which the MD11 is based on) which creates stability issues. That, coupled with a designed shift of the CG towards the aft section means aircraft is unstable at low speeds and can stall unexpectedly. This is not the first incident of this nature involving a MD11.
